Who is this choice relevant to?

People counting carbohydrate in a biscuit treat

A stated biscuit weight or pack portion lets you work out the carbohydrate in the amount you intend to eat. The small appearance of a biscuit cannot do that on its own.

Shoppers choosing a regular snack

If your aim is a snack with less carbohydrate, compare shortbread with other snack types. Diabetes UK advises paying attention to both the carbohydrate eaten and portion size.

Shoppers also checking allergens

Check the precise pack for wheat, milk and any relevant nut or peanut information. A gluten-free or wheat-free claim addresses that ingredient concern; it does not tell you the biscuit’s carbohydrate content.

What should you check before buying?

Start with the portion you would actually eat, then read the nutrition and allergen information for that product.

Priority What to check Your needs
Carbohydrate per portion Find the carbohydrate per biscuit or sealed pack. Tesco Groceries lists 3.9g per 7g Tesco Scottish Shortbread Bite; its Walker’s Wee Shorties listing gives 14.6g per 25g pack. I want to count the amount in the portion I plan to eat, not estimate it from how small the biscuits look.
Piece size If nutrition is given only per 100g, check the weight of an individual piece before calculating its carbohydrate. Count every piece you intend to eat. A single biscuit is easier for me to account for when its weight is stated; an unspecified handful is not.
Other label details Read total carbohydrate as well as sugars, and compare saturated fat for the portion. Diabetes UK’s carbohydrate guidance focuses on the total amount eaten, not sugars alone. I do not want a sugar figure or a “mini” label to stand in for the full nutrition panel.
Ingredients and allergens Check the current ingredients and any precautionary allergen wording on the exact pack. Read a free-from claim separately from its carbohydrate information. Where wheat, milk, nuts or peanuts matter to me, I need the pack’s allergen details as well as its portion figures.

Common shortbread shopping mistakes

  • Assuming “mini” means low carbohydrate

A smaller biscuit can contain less carbohydrate than a larger portion of the same product without changing the carbohydrate concentration of the shortbread. Tesco Groceries lists 59.6g carbohydrate per 100g for Tesco Scottish Shortbread Bites.

Use the per-biscuit figure where stated. Otherwise, calculate from the per-100g figure only if you also know the weight of each biscuit.

  • Reading sugars instead of total carbohydrate

Sugars are only one part of the carbohydrate figure used for portion counting. Diabetes UK identifies the total amount of carbohydrate eaten as particularly relevant after eating.

Check total carbohydrate for the number of biscuits you intend to have, then read the other nutrition figures.

  • Assuming an individual pack is a small-carbohydrate snack

A sealed pack defines a portion but does not make it low in carbohydrate. Tesco Groceries lists 14.6g carbohydrate per 25g pack of Walker’s Wee Shorties.

Count the full pack when comparing it with your planned portion; do not treat the wrapper itself as a nutrition claim.

  • Treating a free-from claim as a carbohydrate claim

Wheat-free or gluten-free wording does not establish the carbohydrate content. Tesco Groceries lists 11.1g carbohydrate per approximately 18g biscuit for Tesco Free From Shortbread.

Check the free-from wording for the ingredient you need to avoid, and read the nutrition panel separately.

Mini shortbread brand references

Tesco Scottish Shortbread Bites are a 125g bag with nutrition stated for one 7g biscuit.

  • Tesco Groceries lists 3.9g carbohydrate per biscuit, making a stated number of bites straightforward to count.
  • Count all the bites you intend to eat; the per-biscuit figure does not describe a larger portion.

Walker’s Shortbread

Wee Shorties come as six 25g packs of mini shortbread fingers.

  • Tesco Groceries lists 14.6g carbohydrate per 25g pack, giving a figure for the whole wrapped portion.
  • A defined pack is not necessarily a smaller carbohydrate portion than one mini biscuit.

Dean’s

Dean’s All Butter Shortbread Minis are listed by Dean’s of Huntly in a case of approximately 100 individual 10g packs.

  • Dean’s of Huntly lists 65.7g carbohydrate per 100g, equivalent by calculation to approximately 6.57g per 10g pack.

Frequently asked questions

Does choosing mini shortbread make it suitable for diabetes?

Not automatically. Diabetes UK advises that the total carbohydrate eaten matters after eating, so use the carbohydrate figure for the number of biscuits you plan to have rather than treating “mini” as a dietary claim.

Can I use a 10g-carbohydrate snack guide to compare mini biscuits?

You can use it as a general comparison, not a personal limit. Milton Keynes University Hospital’s adult snack guide uses 10g carbohydrate or less as a general reference; Tesco Groceries lists 3.9g per Scottish Shortbread Bite, so two would contain 7.8g based on that listing. Check the current pack and use the portion guidance relevant to you.

Does gluten-free or wheat-free shortbread contain less carbohydrate?

A free-from claim does not answer that question. Tesco Groceries lists 11.1g carbohydrate per approximately 18g biscuit for Tesco Free From Shortbread. Compare the carbohydrate on the exact pack separately from its ingredient claims.

What allergen information should I check on shortbread?

Read the ingredients and any precautionary allergen wording on the current pack, particularly for wheat, milk, nuts or peanuts if relevant to you. GOV.UK’s UK food-labelling guidance says food businesses must disclose specified allergens when they are ingredients.
