Who this setup suits

People keeping a script beside a call

If the script must stay visible while the call fills another screen, independently positioned displays let you choose a side-by-side or stacked layout. A portrait script screen may also be useful if the monitor and arm both support rotation.

Frequent sit-stand switchers

If you change desk height regularly, check that the arm’s adjustment range lets you reposition the screen for both sitting and standing without hitting nearby shelves, walls or desk fittings.

Large-screen and ultrawide users

For a heavy, deep or curved display, match the exact monitor’s weight, depth and mounting pattern to the arm variant. A screen-size limit alone does not establish that the combination will fit.

What to check before choosing

Decide whether the script needs its own screen, then check the movement you need and whether the monitors and desk can accept the chosen mount.

Concern What to check Who this matters to
A separate script view For two screens, check independent positioning, the intended side-by-side or stacked layout, and mounting compatibility for each display. I need to read the script without covering the call or repeatedly switching windows. Around 42% of consumers put a separate script view first.
Sit-stand adjustment Compare the exact arm’s height and reach adjustment with the space around your desk, and check its supported monitor-weight range. When I change desk height, I want to bring the display back into a usable position without rearranging the workstation. For around 33% of consumers, easy repositioning is the primary concern.
Mount compatibility Check display-only weight, mounting pattern and any depth restrictions; measure desk thickness and the clearance needed by the fixing. A heavy or curved screen, or a desk edge obstructed by fittings, makes fit the deciding issue for me. Compatibility comes first for around 25% of consumers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing by screen size alone

Displays with the same diagonal measurement can have different weights, depths and mounting patterns. Ergotron lists a 3.2–11.3 kg range for the cited LX Desk Monitor Arm, while its HX Desk Monitor Arm supports displays up to 19.1 kg; those limits belong to different models.

Check the monitor manufacturer’s weight without the stand, mounting pattern and depth against the specifications for the exact arm variant.

  • Assuming the clamp fits the desk

A frame, cable tray or wall can obstruct the fixing even when the desktop looks suitable. Ergotron specifies a 1.2–3.2 cm desk-edge thickness range for its cited LX under-mount C-clamp, along with installation-clearance requirements.

Measure the intended mounting point, including space below and behind the desktop, before choosing a clamp or another documented fixing option.

  • Buying a dual arm before planning the layout

A mount that permits two screens does not, by itself, establish where the script will be comfortable to read. Kensington describes side-by-side and stacked positioning for its SmartFit One-Touch dual arm, but the useful arrangement depends on your screens and available space.

Decide whether the script will sit beside or above the call display, and whether it needs portrait rotation; then check each arm’s available adjustments.

  • Treating the arm as the whole workstation solution

Screen placement is only part of a display-screen workstation. The UK Health and Safety Executive also addresses furniture, lighting, glare and working conditions in its guidance.

Set up the arm alongside the rest of the workstation. Where the Health and Safety Executive’s display-screen equipment criteria apply to your work, use your employer’s workstation assessment process.

Relevant brands to consider

Ergotron

Its monitor-arm range includes single, tall-pole, sit-stand, dual and heavy-duty configurations.

  • Ergotron states a 3.2–11.3 kg display-weight range for the cited LX Desk Monitor Arm and support up to 19.1 kg for the HX Desk Monitor Arm.
  • Those are model-specific figures; check the exact variant rather than applying an LX or HX limit to another configuration.

Kensington

Its range includes single and dual arms, including models intended for side-by-side or stacked screens.

  • Kensington specifies both layouts for the SmartFit One-Touch dual arm and describes a detachable VESA 75/100 plate for that model.
  • Check the selected arm’s weight allowance and mounting pattern for both monitors; specifications should not be assumed to carry across the SmartFit range.

Humanscale

Its monitor-arm line includes single, dual and expandable multi-monitor configurations.

  • Humanscale describes the M8 Pro as compatible with conventional and sit-stand workstations and lists a 4.1–22.7 kg range for its single-monitor configuration.
  • Capacity changes with the configuration, so the single-arm range must not be treated as a per-screen allowance for a dual or crossbar setup.

Colebrook Bosson Saunders

Its Flo line includes a single-monitor arm and an expandable Flo Modular system.

  • Colebrook Bosson Saunders specifies the cited Flo for 2–7 kg screens with VESA 75/100 mounting, 584 mm horizontal reach and 483 mm vertical reach.
  • For a heavier or deeper ultrawide, check a suitably rated model rather than extending Flo’s stated range to that display.

Common questions

Do I need a dual monitor arm to read a script during calls?

Not if one monitor can show both the call and script, or you are comfortable switching windows. Choose a dual or stacked arrangement when the script must remain visible independently; a single arm cannot create a separate screen area.

Can the script screen be in portrait orientation?

Yes, if the exact arm permits the required rotation and supports the monitor’s weight and mounting pattern. Check that the rotated screen also has enough clearance from the other display and nearby fittings.

What should I measure before ordering a clamp-mounted arm?

Record the monitor’s weight without its stand and its mounting pattern, then measure the usable desk edge, desktop thickness and space below and behind the intended fixing point. Clamp requirements vary: Ergotron specifies a 1.2–3.2 cm desk-edge range for its cited LX under-mount C-clamp.

Does my employer need to assess this workstation?

For workers who use display screen equipment daily as part of normal work for continuous periods of an hour or more, the UK Health and Safety Executive says employers must carry out a workstation assessment. An arm can help position a screen, but it does not replace an assessment of the whole workstation.

How should I look after the arm once it is installed?

Follow the exact model’s installation and adjustment instructions, and check that cables do not snag across the movement you use. Adjust tension only as its manufacturer directs and keep the display within the published load range.
