Who is this setup for?

Document-heavy lesson planners

Teachers and tutors comparing archives, slides, timelines and lesson-plan documents need to decide how much screen space and text detail their desk can accommodate. The 4K models described by Dell and LG offer two different screen sizes for that decision.

Laptop-first study users

If a laptop is the main computer, check whether one USB-C connection can carry the video and power it needs. Dell and BenQ specify different power-delivery limits on the models discussed below, alongside adjustable stands.

Small-desk quiet-study users

Desk depth, stand footprint and viewing distance may decide whether a larger panel is practical. The Health and Safety Executive advises positioning a screen about an arm’s length away; LG’s clamp-mounted Ergo model also calls for a suitable desk edge.

What matters when choosing?

Start with the space you need for documents, then check the laptop connection and whether the screen can be positioned comfortably on your desk.

Concern What to check Who this matters to
Document detail and workspace Compare 27-inch QHD and 4K resolution at your preferred display scaling. Check that desk depth allows your intended viewing distance. When I compare source material with slides and notes, I want readable detail without a screen that crowds my desk; around 33% of consumers put document workspace first.
Laptop connection and positioning Check USB-C video support, the laptop’s charging requirement against the monitor’s stated wattage, and the stand’s adjustment range. With a laptop as my main computer, I want the connection and screen height to work together at my desk; roughly 25% of consumers put laptop connection and positioning first.
Extended-reading comfort Check height adjustment and reflections from study lighting. The Health and Safety Executive advises placing the screen top around eye level and taking breaks. During long reading and writing sessions, reflections or an awkward screen position interrupt my work; around 25% of consumers prioritise workstation comfort.
Desk fit and simplicity Measure desk width and depth; for a clamp stand, check edge clearance and the manufacturer’s mounting requirements. On a compact study desk, I need the screen and stand to leave enough usable working space; roughly 17% of consumers put desk fit and a straightforward setup first.

Checks that are easy to overlook

  • Choosing a large screen before checking the desk

LG’s 31.5-inch 32UN880K-B uses a C-clamp stand. Its adjustment range is useful only if the clamp can be installed and the screen can sit at a workable viewing distance.

Measure desk depth and check the manufacturer’s clamp-clearance and installation requirements before ordering.

A separate compatible mounting arrangement may be needed if the clamp does not fit.

  • Assuming every USB-C connection carries video and enough power

USB-C describes the connector, not every function supported by the laptop, cable and monitor. Dell specifies up to 90W on the P2725QE, while BenQ specifies 65W on the GW2790QT.

Compare your laptop’s video-output support and charging requirement with the monitor’s specifications, and check the cable you intend to use.

You may still need a separate laptop charger or a suitable cable.

  • Relying on eye-comfort branding instead of screen placement

A named display feature cannot establish how comfortable your particular desk arrangement will be. The Health and Safety Executive’s workstation guidance addresses screen height, distance, reflections and breaks.

Set up the monitor and lighting for your workspace rather than treating an eye-comfort label as a substitute for those checks.

Frequently asked questions

How should I position a monitor for lesson planning?

Place the top of the screen around eye level and the screen about an arm’s length away, following Health and Safety Executive guidance. Adjust the chair, stand and desk layout together so that the screen and keyboard sit in front of you.

Will any USB-C monitor charge my laptop and carry video through one cable?

No: the laptop, monitor and cable must support the functions you need. Dell specifies USB-C video, data, Ethernet and up to 90W power delivery for its P2725QE; BenQ specifies 65W for its GW2790QT. Compare those limits with your own laptop rather than assuming the connector alone establishes compatibility.

Does display-screen law apply when a teacher plans lessons at home?

The Health and Safety Executive says the Display Screen Equipment Regulations apply to workers who use display-screen equipment daily for continuous periods of an hour or more; whether duties apply to a particular home-working arrangement depends on the employment circumstances. Its positioning guidance can also help with a personal study setup, without making a particular monitor a legal purchase requirement.

What does CE marking mean when buying a monitor in Great Britain?

Great Britain government guidance published by the Office for Product Safety and Standards on 25 March 2025 says recognition of certain goods meeting EU requirements, including CE marking, has been extended indefinitely. That statement does not by itself establish the requirements for a particular monitor, and the cited guidance is not Northern Ireland-specific. Check the product’s applicable marking and documentation; neither marking tells you whether it fits your desk or laptop.
