Side-by-side document formatters
If you keep source and target documents open together, start by assessing whether two panes remain readable at your preferred text size. A 27-inch 4K, 16:9 layout is one conventional option.
Choose an adjustable 27-inch 4K monitor if you usually format source and target documents side by side. If you normally stack the texts, assess a taller 3:2 or 16:18 layout instead; either way, check desk fit and each computer’s connections before prioritising USB-C charging or keyboard-and-mouse switching. The UK Health and Safety Executive’s guidance also makes the whole workstation setup relevant for regular display-screen users, not just the monitor.
If you keep source and target documents open together, start by assessing whether two panes remain readable at your preferred text size. A 27-inch 4K, 16:9 layout is one conventional option.
If you put a reference or source text above the document you are editing, a taller layout may fit your window arrangement better than a wide one. Check how much room each pane has after setting your preferred text size.
When people or laptops change at the same desk, screen adjustment and compatible connections become important. The Health and Safety Executive advises assessing the whole workstation and working conditions, rather than the display alone.
Set up your usual two-document arrangement first, then check how each desk user can position the screen. Consider one-cable connections or switching peripherals if the computers at the desk would actually use them.
| Concern | What to check | Who this matters to |
|---|---|---|
| Document layout | Try your source and target windows side by side and stacked. Check aspect ratio, resolution and text scaling at the size you use. | If I need both passages visible while formatting, I want panes I can read without repeatedly switching windows. Around 45% of consumers put document layout first. |
| Shared-desk adjustment | Check the stand’s adjustment range, desk depth and any mounting requirements. The Health and Safety Executive advises placing the screen directly in front of the user, with its top around eye level and the screen roughly an arm’s length away. | When someone else uses the desk after me, I need to reposition the screen rather than inherit their setup. For around 33% of consumers, adjustment is the primary concern. |
| Computer connections | Confirm each computer’s video connection and charging needs. For a shared keyboard and mouse, check the monitor’s actual two-computer switching arrangement. | If I regularly change between computers, I want the display and peripherals to follow without rebuilding the desk setup. Connection and switching needs come first for around 22% of consumers. |
Resolution does not determine how the available space is divided. The 16:9, 3:2 and 16:18 displays specified by Dell, BenQ and LG have different proportions, so the same source-and-target arrangement will occupy them differently.
Recreate your normal window arrangement, then check aspect ratio and readable text scaling before settling on a resolution.
Screen placement, desk depth and seating still matter. The Health and Safety Executive’s display-screen guidance addresses the workstation as a whole.
Check that each user can place the screen centrally and at a workable height and distance. Where the Health and Safety Executive’s conditions for a workstation assessment apply, include the shared setup in that assessment.
A USB-C socket alone does not establish that a particular computer can send video and receive the required charging power. Switching a keyboard and mouse between computers also depends on the monitor’s connections and setup.
Check both computers’ video outputs, charging requirements, cables and peripheral connections against the exact monitor model.
Depending on those connections, the intended setup may also require compatible cables, adapters or separate switching equipment.
LG marks the UK 28MQ780-B as discontinued. Its specifications can help you assess a tall, stacked layout, but they do not establish the condition or support of a unit offered by a seller.
If considering one, check the full model code, condition, supplied clamp stand, seller terms and applicable warranty.
Dell’s U2725QE is a reference point for a conventional 27-inch 4K layout with adjustable positioning and hub-oriented connections.
BenQ’s RD280UA provides a 3:2 layout to assess if source and edited text are usually stacked.
LG’s 28MQ780-B DualUp is a reference for a narrow, vertically stacked workspace.
These monitors offer different ways to arrange parallel texts, from conventional 4K screens to a much wider curved display. Compare their dimensions and your desk space before treating connection features as a deciding factor.

Consider its 32:9 ultrawide format if you want to arrange text windows across a particularly broad screen.
The title specifies a 1800R curve and Double Quad HD display. Measure the shared desk and confirm the connections and any switching functions you need for the offered variant.

Assess this larger conventional-format screen if you usually position the two documents side by side.
Its title specifies 3840 × 2160 resolution, Type-C 65W and a USB hub. Check the screen’s fit and whether Type-C video, charging and peripheral switching meet each computer’s requirements.

Its 16:9 format is a conventional starting point for two documents placed side by side.
The title specifies a 27-inch 4K UHD display. Confirm the stand adjustments you need and the exact connection functions before using it with shared laptops or peripherals.

Consider this larger screen for side-by-side documents if the desk has room and its glossy finish suits the lighting.
The title specifies an IPS 4K UHD display, USB-C and a height-adjustable stand. Check the required video and charging functions with every intended computer, particularly if the desk is not used solely with Macs.

Assess this 27-inch option for a conventional side-by-side arrangement when screen positioning changes between desk users.
The title specifies an IPS 4K UHD display, USB-C and a height-adjustable stand. Check reflections in the intended room and confirm video, charging and host compatibility for each laptop.
Choose by your usual window arrangement: a 27-inch 4K, 16:9 screen is a conventional option for documents side by side, while a 3:2 or 16:18 screen is worth assessing for stacked text. Dell, BenQ and LG specify examples of these respective layouts; check your preferred text scaling before deciding.
Adjustment matters when users need different screen positions, but the stand is only part of the setup. The Health and Safety Executive advises keeping the screen directly in front of the user, with its top around eye level and the display roughly an arm’s length away; check whether the desk and stand let each user achieve a workable position.
Prioritise these features if compatible computers regularly share the monitor or the same keyboard and mouse. Check each computer’s video output and charging requirement, plus the monitor’s actual KVM connections; a USB-C port by itself does not confirm that the complete setup will work.
In the UK, the Health and Safety Executive says employers must carry out a workstation assessment where workers use display screen equipment daily as part of normal work, continuously for an hour or more. The assessment addresses equipment, furniture, working conditions and individual requirements, not just the monitor.
Check the exact model, condition, included stand and seller support before committing to a unit. LG marks its UK 28MQ780-B as discontinued, so its specification page alone cannot tell you what is supplied with a particular unit or what warranty applies.
