Who is this setup for?

Hot-desk laptop users

If different people use the same workstation, the screen needs to be repositioned for each person. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) advises placing the top of the screen around eye level, about an arm’s length away, with the screen directly in front of the user.

Dense-note organisers

Keeping reading material, browser research and notes visible together makes native resolution an important choice. A larger physical screen does not necessarily provide more pixels for arranging those windows.

Single-cable desk sharers

A USB-C connection may make it easier to connect a laptop and clear the desk for the next person. Video support and charging power still need to suit the laptop: the monitor models discussed here have different USB-C capabilities.

What matters when choosing?

Start with how often the screen must be reset between users. Then decide whether fewer cable connections or more room for document windows matters most.

Concern What to check Who this matters to
Screen positioning Check height adjustment, tilt, swivel and pivot separately. Consider whether the desk permits a suitable monitor arm. When several people take turns at one desk, I need to bring the screen back to a comfortable position rather than inherit the previous user’s setup. Around 42% of consumers would put repeatable screen positioning first.
USB-C connection and charging Confirm USB-C video support on the laptop, the monitor’s power-delivery rating and any cable requirements. If I reconnect my laptop whenever I arrive, fewer cables would make the desk easier to use and hand over. For roughly 33% of consumers, reducing those connections would be the primary need.
Document workspace Compare native resolution as well as screen size; check desk depth and comfortable text scaling. With research, reading and notes open together, I want enough pixels to arrange the windows without constantly switching between them. Making document workspace the main priority would describe about 25% of consumers.

Dell UK lists the 23.8-inch P2425HE at 1920 × 1080 with height, swivel and pivot adjustment and USB-C power delivery up to 90 W. LG UK lists a larger, adjustable 27-inch FHD option in the 27BA650-B, while its 27-inch 2560 × 1440 27U631A-B has a tilt-adjustable stand and USB-C power delivery up to 15 W. Those differences make resolution, positioning and charging separate decisions rather than features to infer from screen size or the presence of USB-C.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming USB-C will replace the laptop charger

USB-C power delivery varies between the cited monitors: LG UK lists 15 W for the 27U631A-B and 65 W for the 27BA650-B, while Dell UK lists up to 90 W for the P2425HE. A USB-C display connection alone does not establish that a particular laptop can charge from it.

Check both the laptop’s USB-C video capability and its charging requirement against the monitor and cable you plan to use.

You may still need to connect the laptop’s existing charger at the shared desk.

  • Using screen size as a shortcut for document space

LG UK lists the 27BA650-B at 1920 × 1080 and the 27U631A-B at 2560 × 1440. The QHD model has more native pixels for arranging windows even though both have 27-inch panels.

Compare resolution with physical size, then check whether the resulting text size and desk footprint suit the workstation.

  • Treating an adjustable stand as the whole workstation setup

The HSE’s display-screen guidance considers the screen’s position alongside the rest of the workstation. Changing the monitor alone does not set the chair, keyboard, mouse and viewing distance for every user.

Reset the workstation together when the person using the desk changes, placing the screen directly in front of them at a suitable height and distance.

Relevant brands to consider

Dell

The Dell Pro 24 Plus USB-C Hub Monitor P2425HE is a reference point for a compact shared desk where screen repositioning and laptop connections both matter.

  • Dell UK lists a 23.8-inch FHD IPS panel, 150 mm height adjustment, swivel, pivot, USB-C power delivery up to 90 W and an RJ45 Ethernet port.
  • Its 1920 × 1080 resolution provides fewer native pixels for note layouts than the QHD model discussed below.

LG

LG’s 27BA650-B and 27U631A-B illustrate two different priorities within 27-inch monitors: stand adjustment and USB-C charging, or QHD resolution.

  • LG UK lists height, swivel and pivot adjustment with USB-C power delivery up to 65 W on the FHD 27BA650-B; the 27U631A-B instead has a 2560 × 1440 QHD panel.
  • The 27U631A-B lists tilt adjustment and USB-C power delivery up to 15 W, so its positioning and charging need closer attention at a frequently shared desk.

AOC

The AOC 24V5C/BK is a compact USB-C option to examine when the shared desk needs several connection types.

  • AOC Monitors UK lists a 23.8-inch FHD IPS panel, USB-C power delivery up to 65 W, four USB ports, HDMI and DisplayPort.
  • If users need to reset screen height, swivel or pivot frequently, check the movement available from the stand or a compatible arm before choosing this model.

Joybuy monitor choices

These monitor choices address different parts of the shared-desk decision: compact placement, room for note windows and screen positioning. Check each model’s connections and stand movement against the laptops and desk it will serve.

Dahua 32-inch 4K 165Hz curved OLED monitor

Dahua 32-inch 4K 165Hz Curved OLED Monitor

Consider this larger screen if the shared desk has room for a curved display and you want to arrange several documents. The title specifies 3840 × 2160 resolution, USB-C power delivery up to 65 W and a USB hub. Check laptop video and charging compatibility, and confirm pivot movement if portrait orientation is important.

Common questions

Does a shared office need a display-screen workstation assessment?

In the UK, an employer must carry out a workstation assessment when workers use display screen equipment daily as part of their normal work, continuously for an hour or more, according to the HSE. The assessment covers the whole workstation, the job and any special requirements—not just the choice of monitor.

How should different people position a shared monitor?

Each person should reset the screen for their own seated position. HSE guidance puts the top of the screen around eye level, about an arm’s length away and directly in front of the user; suitable stand or arm adjustment can help when the desk changes hands.

Will any USB-C monitor charge my laptop through one cable?

No—check both the laptop’s USB-C video support and the monitor’s power delivery against its charging needs. For example, LG UK lists USB-C power delivery up to 15 W on the 27U631A-B and up to 65 W on the 27BA650-B, while Dell UK lists up to 90 W on the P2425HE.

What should a shared office do with an old monitor?

Use the organisation’s appropriate waste-electrical disposal arrangements rather than treating an old monitor as general waste. UK guidance from the Office for Product Safety and Standards and the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs explains that waste electrical and electronic equipment is regulated to encourage its recovery, reuse and recycling.
