What to check before buying
For acoustic-folk listening, establish how the player will connect to your system, then check access to your recordings and any living-room features you will actually use.
| Concern | Buying checks | Who this matters to |
| System connections |
Identify whether your speakers are passive or powered; check the required analogue or digital output and fixed or variable volume control. |
If I am keeping my amplifier or powered speakers, the player must fit their inputs without leaving me short of amplification. Around 33% of consumers put system connections first. |
| Music access |
Check your streaming service and control method, plus network or USB playback if you keep local files. Confirm any plan and regional conditions. |
I want my acoustic-folk albums, radio stations and personal library within reach, rather than changing how I listen to accommodate a player; around 27% of consumers prioritise music access. |
| Living-room integration |
Consider HDMI ARC or eARC, multi-room grouping, a subwoofer output or room-adjustment features only where your setup calls for them. |
When music shares a room with a TV or other speakers, I want the connections to serve that setup. Room and living-room integration comes first for around 20% of consumers. |
| Fewer components |
If starting with passive speakers, confirm that the player includes amplification and can be matched to the speakers you intend to use. |
I am building a system without an existing amplifier and would rather use fewer separate boxes; around 20% of consumers place a simpler system first. |

Questions about network players
Will a network audio player power passive speakers by itself?
Only if it includes amplification suitable for those speakers. A source-only streamer needs an amplifier or receiver to drive passive speakers, although it can also feed powered speakers. Naim describes the Uniti Atom as an all-in-one player with streaming and amplification.
Should I use an analogue or digital output for acoustic folk?
Use an analogue output when you want the player’s DAC to feed an amplifier or powered speakers; use a digital output when you intend to keep an external DAC or use a suitable digital input on your amplifier. Neither connection alone establishes which system will sound preferable.
Will a listed music service work at the same quality in the UK?
Not necessarily: WiiM says service availability and supported quality vary by service, plan, region, source and output. Check your account tier and intended playback method for the particular player before buying.
Do I need room correction for acoustic-folk listening?
Not necessarily. Consider room-adjustment features if your speaker placement or room is presenting a problem you want to address, and check what setup they require. WiiM lists RoomFit on the Ultra, while Bluesound presents Dirac Live for the NODE as an available upgrade, not an automatic improvement.
What should I do with an old network player I am replacing?
Use an appropriate electrical-recycling route rather than putting it in ordinary household waste. GOV.UK explains that UK waste electrical and electronic equipment measures aim to reduce electrical waste sent to landfill or incineration through recovery, reuse and recycling.
