Frequently asked questions
Does organic on oats mean they are gluten-free?
No. Coeliac UK states that organic, pure and 100% oats wording does not tell you whether an oat product is gluten-free. If gluten-free suitability is required, choose oats explicitly labelled gluten-free and seek individual healthcare advice where needed.
What allows an oat product to be labelled organic in the UK?
According to Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs guidance, a food labelled organic must meet organic-production rules, meet the required ingredient conditions and be certified with its suppliers by an approved organic control body. For food products, at least 95% of agricultural ingredients must generally be organic.
Can an instant oat pot be a ready-to-eat picnic lunch?
Not automatically. Tesco states that its Instant Oats Original pot needs about 170 ml of boiling water and 2–3 minutes standing. Check the exact pack before you leave, because instant does not necessarily mean ready to eat cold.
Are plain organic rolled oats a good picnic choice?
They can be when you prepare the dish before leaving home or have suitable cooking facilities. Plain organic rolled oats provide a simple base, but they are not ready-to-eat picnic food by themselves.
Should I check recall notices before packing porridge sachets or pots?
Yes. The Food Standards Agency has issued a recall for specified MOMA porridge pots and sachets because of possible mouse contamination, covering products with best-before dates from 24 April 2026 to 12 March 2027. Check the Food Standards Agency alert, exact product and date code before consuming an affected item.
