Who is each format for?

Organic-label-first drinkers

If you want plain, unsweetened matcha, check the exact product’s organic labelling and ingredient list before comparing grade descriptions. A flavoured mix is a different purchase from single-ingredient powder.

Plain-cup drinkers

If you plan to whisk matcha with water and drink it without other ingredients, compare the maker’s serving and water instructions. Clearspring and JING give different quantities for their ceremonial products.

Latte and recipe makers

If matcha will go into milk, smoothies or breakfast recipes, look for a powder whose maker names those uses. For a larger pack, check how it should be stored after opening.

What should you check before buying?

Start with the organic label and ingredients, then choose the preparation format you will actually use at breakfast.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Organic status Check the organic claim, ingredients and certification information on the exact product. Defra’s UK organic-labelling guidance says products described as organic must meet production rules and certification conditions; food products must have at least 95% organic agricultural ingredients. I want organic matcha without sweeteners or other added ingredients, so I need to check both the organic description and the ingredient list.
Preparation Compare the stated powder quantity, water quantity and temperature. Clearspring suggests 1g in 30ml hot water for its Ceremonial Grade; JING specifies 1.5g in 160ml at 70°C for its ceremonial matcha. For a plain cup, I want instructions I can follow. If I usually make a latte or smoothie, I would look for a powder the maker also presents for mixed drinks.
Pack format Check the pack size, whether it contains loose powder or individual portions, and whether any gift-set accessories are specified. Waitrose lists Clearspring Matcha Shot as an eight-bag portioned option. Individual portions appeal if I make matcha occasionally; a larger pouch makes more sense to me only if I will use it and can follow its storage directions.
Caffeine Check caffeine information for the exact powder and measure the amount used. Clearspring estimates approximately 32mg per 1g of its Ceremonial Grade. The NHS advises no more than 200mg of caffeine a day during pregnancy, from all sources combined. If I am tracking caffeine, I need to count my matcha serving alongside other drinks, foods or supplements that contain it.
Storage and seller Read the pack’s instructions for storage after opening. For a Marketplace listing, confirm the seller, current label, delivery and return terms before ordering; Tesco Marketplace advises keeping its SuperSelf 120g pouch tightly resealed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. When I buy a larger pouch, I need somewhere suitable to keep the opened powder and want to know who is supplying it.

Common buying mistakes

  • Treating “ceremonial” as an organic claim

Grade wording describes how a product is positioned; it does not establish its organic status. Defra’s UK guidance applies separate production, ingredient and certification conditions to food labelled organic.

Check the organic information and ingredients on the exact product, regardless of its grade description.

  • Choosing by grade without considering the drink

A powder positioned for a small cup whisked with water may not be the format you want for repeated lattes or recipes. Clearspring presents its Premium Grade for both drinking and uses such as smoothies and baking.

Decide how you will prepare matcha most often, then compare the maker’s stated uses and serving instructions.

  • Overlooking caffeine in the serving

The amount of powder used affects caffeine intake. During pregnancy, the NHS advises a daily limit of 200mg of caffeine from all sources combined.

Measure your serving, check product-specific caffeine information where available and include other caffeine-containing drinks and foods in your daily total.

  • Ignoring storage and seller details on a larger pouch

The SuperSelf Tesco Marketplace listing calls for the opened 120g pouch to be resealed and kept cool, dry and away from direct sunlight. A Marketplace order also warrants a check of the seller and order terms.

Read the current listing and follow the storage instructions on the pack you receive.

Brand and product-line references

These examples show how named matcha products differ in stated use and pack format; they do not establish which will suit every palate.

Clearspring

Clearspring presents separate organic Ceremonial Grade and Premium Grade Japanese matcha powders.

  • Both cited product pages list organic matcha green tea powder as the sole ingredient.
  • The Ceremonial Grade has instructions for a small whisked serving, while the Premium Grade page also names lattes, smoothies and baking. Check the instructions for the grade you choose.

JING

JING describes its 30g organic ceremonial matcha as a single-Okumidori-cultivar product for a whisked cup.

  • JING specifies 1.5g per 160ml cup and water at 70°C.
  • Its cultivar and preparation details help identify the product, but do not establish that everyone will prefer its flavour.

SuperSelf

The SuperSelf organic matcha listing on Tesco Marketplace is for a 120g pouch.

  • The listing describes certified organic, single-ingredient matcha without additives, sweeteners or fillers.
  • Confirm the current seller and label, and follow the listing’s directions to reseal the pouch and store it away from direct sunlight.

Questions about organic matcha

How can I check an organic matcha claim in the UK?

Check the claim, ingredients and certification information for the exact product rather than relying on words such as “natural”. Defra’s UK organic-labelling guidance says food labelled organic must meet production rules and certification conditions; for food products, at least 95% of agricultural ingredients must be organic.

Does “ceremonial grade” mean organic?

No. “Ceremonial” describes a product grade or intended use, while “organic” is a separately regulated food description in the UK. Check the organic claim and ingredient list on the exact product.

How much powder and water should I use for a plain cup?

Follow the instructions for your powder rather than assuming one scoop fits every product. Clearspring suggests 1g in 30ml hot water for its Ceremonial Grade, while JING specifies 1.5g in 160ml at 70°C for its ceremonial matcha.

How does matcha count towards caffeine intake during pregnancy?

Count the caffeine in your matcha serving alongside all other sources. The NHS advises no more than 200mg of caffeine a day during pregnancy; Clearspring estimates approximately 32mg per 1g of its Ceremonial Grade powder, but the amount depends on the product and serving used.

How should I store opened matcha?

Follow the directions on the exact pack. For its 120g matcha pouch, the SuperSelf Tesco Marketplace listing says to reseal it tightly and keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
