What should you check before choosing?
Measure the library and work out how the files will reach the local copy before comparing drive capacity, connections and access between devices.
Portable hard drive
Consider it: For a large archive copied periodically from one computer and usually kept at home.
Plan for: A second backup elsewhere; one portable drive is still one physical copy.
Portable SSD
Consider it: When you carry the archive or make repeated transfers and the chosen capacity holds your files.
Plan for: Checking the host and cable before relying on a quoted transfer speed. Samsung UK says its T7 Shield speed claim requires USB 3.2 Gen 2 and UASP support.
NAS
Consider it: When several household devices need access to a central photo archive.
Plan for: Compatible disks, setup and a separate backup destination; Synology’s DS224+ is a two-bay enclosure, not a substitute for another copy.
| Priority | What to check | Your needs |
| Capacity |
Measure the files to be copied. Allow room for additions and decide whether this storage must also hold another version. |
My complete photo and video library needs to fit, with space for the copies I actually plan to keep. |
| Export and retrieval |
Check the source service’s download method, available computer space and whether the resulting files are easy to browse. Amazon Customer Service says Amazon Photos albums cannot be downloaded as whole albums. |
I want to locate a photo after the transfer, not just see that a download finished. |
| Device compatibility |
Check ports, cables, operating systems and the drive’s file format before copying. Apple Support warns that reformatting erases a disk; Samsung UK says the T7 Shield’s quoted speed depends on the host, cable and UASP. |
Both our computers may need to read the copy, or I may transfer files often enough for connection speed to matter. |
| Separate, recoverable copies |
Keep another backup apart from the local device. If encrypting a removable drive, check the password and recovery process before relying on it; Microsoft Support says a BitLocker recovery key may be needed to regain access. |
If a drive is lost or stops working, I still need a way to retrieve the photos. |
Joybuy portable storage options
These portable SSDs and hard drives are options for a local copy connected to a computer. Compare their stated capacities with your library size; a shared NAS is a different setup decision.

Common questions
Can I download an entire Amazon Photos album in one step?
No. Amazon Customer Service says albums cannot be downloaded as entire albums: open an album and select the pictures to download. For a large library, organise downloads on a computer and check the files before copying them to external storage.
Which photo and video files should I keep in the backup?
Keep the original downloaded files where possible, then open a sample of photos and videos to check the export. Amazon Customer Service lists supported types including JPEG, PNG, HEIC and ProRaw photos and MP4 and QuickTime videos, but format support alone does not confirm that every item transferred.
Can one external drive be used with both Mac and Windows?
It can, if its format and connection suit both computers. Apple Support describes formatting an external disk for use with Mac and Windows; check the exact drive first, and keep another copy before reformatting because the process erases the disk.
Should I encrypt a portable photo backup?
Consider encryption if the drive could be lost or stolen, but arrange recovery before depending on it. Microsoft Support documents BitLocker for removable drives and says its recovery key may be needed to regain access; Apple Support says encrypting an external drive through Disk Utility requires erasing it first.
Does a NAS remove the need for another backup?
No. A NAS can give household devices a central place for files, but it still needs a separate backup destination. Synology documents using Hyper Backup to copy NAS data to destinations such as external storage, another NAS, file servers and cloud services.
