Who needs a photo-library backup?

People moving photos out of a cloud service

If your library is in Amazon Photos, Google Photos, iCloud Photos or a similar service, you need a local copy you can inspect and keep separately. Work out how to export the whole library before deciding where to store it.

Home photo archivists

If a growing collection of photos and videos will mainly stay at home, measure the full library and allow room for later additions. Portability may matter less than having enough space for the archive.

Households backing up several devices

If photos come from multiple computers or phones, a central local destination may make recurring backups and shared access easier to manage. That destination still needs its own separate backup.

What should you check before choosing storage?

Establish what you can export and how much space it takes before comparing a drive, USB storage or a networked device. Then decide how the copy will be updated and kept separate.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Complete export Use the photo service’s supported download method. Check videos, file types, filenames and folders, then open a sample of the local files. Amazon Customer Service says its web workflow cannot download an entire album in one action. I need a copy I can browse and restore, not just photos visible in an app or a folder containing only some of my albums.
Capacity Measure the complete local copy, including videos and other folders you intend to back up. Compare that size with the device’s usable space and leave room for growth or retained backup versions. My library needs to fit now, without leaving the next batch of photos or videos outside the backup.
Storage location Decide whether the copy will stay at a desk, travel on a portable drive or be available to several devices over a home network. Check connections and file-system compatibility for the computers that will use it. I want storage that fits how I move files: occasional archiving at home, frequent transfers, or backups from several household devices.
Repeatable backups Check whether your selected folders can be backed up routinely. Microsoft Support documents File History backups to an external drive or network location; Apple Support documents automatic Time Machine backups to external storage. After the first export, I need a manageable way to copy new photos and changes without relying on memory alone.
Independent copies Check where each copy lives and whether deletion or loss at one location could affect another. Backblaze’s 3-2-1 guidance calls for three copies on two media, with one off-site; Synology says BeeStation restore points do not replace full backups. Important photos should remain accessible if one drive, account or location is lost.

What can leave a backup incomplete?

  • Buying capacity before measuring the library

Videos and files outside the most visible photo folders may make the copy larger than expected. A drive chosen for only part of the library can hold only a partial backup.

Create and measure the local copy where possible, then allow space for new files and any backup versions you plan to retain.

  • Treating one local device as the whole plan

An external drive or network-attached storage device remains one local destination. Synology says internal BeeStation restore points are not a replacement for full backups.

Keep another independent copy of important files at a separate location. Backblaze’s 3-2-1 guidance includes an off-site copy.

  • Assuming an album downloads in one step

Amazon Customer Service says its web download workflow cannot download an entire album as one action. It is easy to mistake a selected batch for the complete collection.

Plan the selections or use a supported export workflow, then compare the downloaded files and folders with the source before relying on them.

  • Choosing ruggedness before checking the workflow

A portable drive’s protection features say nothing about whether every photo was copied or whether another independent copy exists.

Check capacity, connections, file-system compatibility and your repeat-backup method first; consider portability features for the way you will carry the device.

Which product lines illustrate the options?

These examples show different storage arrangements; the features described apply to the named product lines or models, not to every device from each brand.

Seagate

The Expansion Desktop range illustrates a drive for a mainly desk-based archive.

  • Seagate UK lists Expansion Desktop variants from 4 TB to 30 TB and positions the range for backup and archiving.
  • A desktop drive kept at home is a local copy, not an off-site one. Check the capacity and connections of the exact model.

Samsung

The portable T7 Shield 4 TB MU-PE4T0S/EU illustrates an SSD option for a copy that is moved between places.

  • Samsung UK lists 4 TB capacity and describes fast transfer, password protection, IP65 dust and water resistance, and 3 m drop resistance for this exact model.
  • Those model-specific claims do not establish the features of other Samsung SSDs or replace the need for another copy.

Synology

BeeStation 4 TB illustrates a central home destination for files and photos from several devices.

  • Synology UK describes local photo organisation, computer and mobile-camera-roll backup, and storage sharing with up to eight users for BeeStation 4 TB.
  • Synology says its internal restore points do not replace full backups and recommends backing up BeeStation data to an external location.

Joybuy storage options

These portable SSDs and hard drives are options for holding a local photo-library copy. Measure the complete export and check your connection and backup method before choosing a capacity; keep a further independent copy for important photos.

Grey Samsung Portable SSD T7 4 TB

Samsung Portable SSD T7 4 TB, Grey

A portable local-copy option if the full photo and video export fits with room for growth. The product name specifies 4 TB and USB Type-C 3.2 Gen 2; check the connection on the device you will use and keep another independent copy.

Blue Samsung Portable SSD T7 2 TB

Samsung Portable SSD T7 2 TB, Blue

Consider this portable drive when the measured export and planned additions fit within its 2 TB capacity. The product name specifies USB Type-C 3.2 Gen 2; a separate copy is still needed if these files are important.

Blue Western Digital My Passport Ultra portable 5 TB hard drive

Western Digital My Passport Ultra 5 TB, Blue

This portable external hard drive offers a stated 5 TB destination for a local archive, provided the complete export fits. If you use a Mac or share the drive between operating systems, check the required file-system setup before copying files; retain another independent backup.

SanDisk Portable SSD 2 TB

SanDisk Portable SSD 2 TB

A portable local-copy option for an export that fits within 2 TB with room to grow. Before buying, confirm the connection and file-system requirements of the computer or other device you will use; do not rely on this drive as the only copy.

Black Samsung MU-PE1T0S 1 TB portable SSD

Samsung MU-PE1T0S 1 TB, Black

The stated 1 TB capacity makes this portable SSD worth considering for a smaller measured export or a secondary copy, rather than assuming it will hold every large library. Its product name specifies USB Type-C 3.2 Gen 2; check capacity and compatibility for your workflow, and keep an independent backup.

Photo backup questions

How much storage does a large photo library need?

Measure the complete local copy, including videos and any computer folders you intend to protect, then choose capacity beyond that size for later additions and retained versions. An album count alone does not tell you how much space the exported files will occupy.

Is syncing photos the same as keeping a separate backup?

Not necessarily: check that you have a complete copy you can find and restore independently of the original account or device. Backblaze’s 3-2-1 guidance recommends multiple copies on different media, including one off-site.

What should I check after downloading from Amazon Photos?

Compare the downloaded photos and videos with the source, open a sample, and inspect folders, filenames and formats. Amazon Customer Service says its web workflow cannot download an entire album in one action and documents file-type and naming restrictions.

Can a computer back up the downloaded library automatically?

Yes, once the files are in folders covered by a suitable backup tool. Microsoft Support documents File History backups to an external drive or network location, while Apple Support documents automatic Time Machine backups to external storage; check that your photo folders are included.

Is network-attached storage enough for a household archive?

Use it as a central local destination, not the only protected copy. Synology says BeeStation restore points are not a replacement for full backups and recommends regularly backing up its data to an external location.
