Who needs which kind of backup?

Start with where the photos are now and how you expect to retrieve them, not just how much space the next device offers.

Phone-first photo collectors

If your camera roll is filling up, automatic upload may reduce manual copying. Check that uploads have finished, that the account has room for more photos and that deleting a phone photo will not remove the copy you meant to keep. For a direct drive transfer, check your particular phone and drive together.

Laptop users building a photo archive

A portable SSD is worth considering when you move large folders regularly. An external HDD is another route for an archive kept mainly at a desk. In either case, plan where a separate copy will live rather than moving your only library from one device to another.

Households sharing storage

A personal-cloud device or NAS can give several phones and computers a central destination. Check each user’s backup workflow and allow for a separate backup of the shared device itself; Synology says BeeStation restore points do not replace full backups.

What should you check before choosing?

Choose the backup workflow first, then check whether your devices can use it and whether you can recover the photos you intend to remove.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Device compatibility Check the phone or computer port, adapter, drive power, app and file system. Apple Support says iPhone external storage needs one data partition in a supported format; some external HDDs need external power. I want to copy photos directly from my phone, so the drive must work with my actual device—not merely have a connector that fits.
Upload and deletion Confirm that an upload has completed and open a few copied files before deleting originals. Apple Support says iCloud Photos synchronises deletions across devices; Microsoft says OneDrive camera backup on Android uploads rather than syncing photos both ways. My phone is full, but I need to know which copy will remain after I clear space.
Capacity and file quality Compare your library size with the destination’s available space and check cloud backup-quality settings. Apple Support says iCloud includes 5 GB; Google Photos Help says a Google Account comes with up to 15 GB and its Storage saver setting can compress or resize eligible content. I have a growing photo and video library, and I want to understand what happens to the stored files as well as whether there is room for them.
Transfers and portability Consider how often you move large folders and carry the drive. Samsung UK’s quoted maximum SSD speeds depend on a compatible host, cable and USB mode, so a speed figure alone cannot predict transfers on your device. Frequent laptop transfers make a small portable drive useful to me; for an archive that stays at home, carrying it matters less.
Recovery Keep an independent copy and check that you can restore files from it. For shared storage, arrange a backup destination outside the NAS; Synology says BeeStation restore points are not full backups. These photos matter enough that one drive, account or shared storage device should not be their only location.

Mistakes that can put photos at risk

  • Treating photo synchronisation as the only backup

Apple Support says edits and deletions in iCloud Photos appear across connected devices. Deleting a photo to free phone space can therefore affect the synchronised library.

Keep another independent copy and check that you can open or restore a sample before clearing the phone.

  • Choosing a drive by its plug or headline speed

A connector that fits does not establish file-system, power or app compatibility. Samsung UK also conditions its quoted SSD maximum speeds on compatible equipment.

Check the exact phone or computer, adapter, drive format, power requirement and cable. Do not reformat a drive holding your only copy.

  • Making a flash drive the sole archive

A dual-connector flash drive can make a device-to-device transfer convenient, but a transfer does not create an independent archive if you then remove every other copy.

Use it for hand-offs or temporary copying, and keep the photo library on a separate backup destination too.

  • Assuming NAS restore points replace a backup

Synology states that BeeStation restore points are not a replacement for full backups.

Set up a separate destination for the NAS data and periodically check that files can be recovered from it.

Brand and service references

These examples illustrate different storage workflows; a brand’s presence here does not establish compatibility with every device.

Samsung

The T7 portable SSD line is a local-storage option to examine for frequent transfers between compatible devices.

  • Samsung UK lists USB-C-to-C and USB-C-to-A cables for the T7 and quotes maximum sequential speeds of up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write for the T7 Shield under its stated host and cable conditions.
  • Samsung says T7 host compatibility can vary and some operating systems may require reformatting. Check the exact model and device before moving your only photo library.

Seagate

Seagate positions its Expansion portable HDD range for local backup, travel storage and file transfers.

  • The Expansion range offers an HDD route for a photo archive kept on a separate physical drive.
  • Seagate describes compatibility with most Windows and macOS systems, not every phone. Check the chosen model’s connector and file system for your devices.

Synology

BeeStation and Synology NAS devices address household storage needs that go beyond carrying a single portable drive.

  • Synology distinguishes its simpler BeeStation route from a NAS aimed at expandable storage, multiple users and more advanced backup arrangements.
  • Synology says BeeStation restore points do not replace a full backup and recommends backing up its data to an external location.

Photo-backup questions

Can I copy photos directly from an iPhone to an external drive?

Yes, if the iPhone, connector or adapter, app and drive are compatible. Apple Support says connected external storage must have one data partition in a supported format, and some external HDDs need their own power or a powered hub. Check those requirements for your particular setup before relying on the transfer.

Can one drive work with both Mac and Windows for a photo library?

It depends on what you will store on it. Apple Support identifies ExFAT as Windows-compatible for volumes over 32 GB, but says an external drive holding a Mac Photos library must use APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Choose the format for the actual library workflow before copying files.

Is iCloud Photos a separate backup of my pictures?

Do not treat synchronisation alone as an independent backup. Apple Support says iCloud Photos carries edits and deletions across devices and advises keeping backup copies. Make another copy that you can check and restore before removing photos to free space.

Can I delete Android phone photos after OneDrive camera backup?

Microsoft says OneDrive camera backup on Android uploads photos rather than syncing them both ways, so deleting backed-up items from the device does not delete their OneDrive copies. First check that the intended photos have finished uploading to the right account and that you can open them there.
