Who is packing the lunch?

People packing lunch to take out

A separately packed portion is easier to put alongside cheese, pickle and bread than nuts from an open sharing bag. KP lists its peanut snack packs in 5 x 30g multipacks, while M&S describes pocket-sized options in its mixed-nut range.

Shoppers comparing salt labels

If the lunch includes cheese, pickle or a prepacked sandwich, the nut pack is one part of the meal’s salt total. Compare its per-portion figure with the other labelled components.

People preparing lunch for others

Check the exact product’s ingredients and precautionary allergen wording when an allergy is involved. GOV.UK lists peanuts and tree nuts among the allergens food businesses must declare when present as ingredients; individual packs can also carry cross-contact warnings.

What should you compare?

Start with the pack format, then compare flavour, labelled salt and allergens for the lunch you are assembling.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Portion format Check the amount in each bag and whether the product is a single pack or a multipack. KP lists Original Salted, Dry Roasted and Honey Roast in 5 x 30g packs. I want to put one separate portion into each packed lunch without opening a sharing bag.
Flavour and ingredients Read the exact variant’s ingredients. KP Original Salted lists peanuts, sunflower oil and salt; KP Honey Roast includes sugar, honey and glucose syrup. For cheese and pickle, I’d choose a savoury flavour unless I specifically wanted a sweet contrast. A mixed-nut pack offers a different combination again.
Salt and sugars Compare like-sized servings: KP lists 0.23g salt and 4.2g sugars for Honey Roast, 0.39g salt for Original Salted, and 0.51g salt for Dry Roasted, each per 30g. Check the rest of the lunch separately. If my lunch already has savoury components, I want to see what the nuts add rather than choosing by flavour name alone.
Allergen information Check ingredients, allergen statements and any ‘may contain’ wording on the current pack. Do not assume a mixed-nut product is interchangeable with a peanut product for someone with an allergy. When I’m packing food for someone else, I need to check the exact flavour and pack they will eat.

Common buying mistakes

  • Treating peanut flavours as interchangeable

KP’s 30g Honey Roast pack lists 4.2g sugars and 0.23g salt; its Original Salted and Dry Roasted packs have different ingredients and list 0.39g and 0.51g salt respectively.

Compare the exact flavours on the same serving basis, then choose whether you want plain savoury, seasoned or sweet-savoury nuts.

  • Checking the nuts but not the rest of the lunch

Salt from a nut pack adds to salt elsewhere in the meal. Tesco lists 1.30g salt per pack for its Ploughmans Sandwich; NHS guidance says adults should have no more than 6g salt a day.

Read the nut pack’s per-portion figure alongside the labels of any prepacked lunch components.

  • Assuming a nut mix is an allergy-friendly substitute

Mixed nuts can contain several tree nuts. M&S lists almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews and hazelnuts in its 75g Nut Collection and labels it unsuitable for people with nut, peanut or sesame allergy.

For someone with an allergy, check the current ingredients and precautionary wording of the exact product rather than relying on its category or flavour.

  • Choosing a sharing bag for a single packed lunch

A larger bag does not provide the same ready-packed serving as an individual snack pack.

If you need one separate portion for each lunch, check the weight and number of bags inside a multipack. If using a larger bag instead, portion the nuts yourself and follow its storage instructions after opening.

Portioning a larger bag takes an extra step and leaves an opened pack to store.

Brand and retailer references

These examples help distinguish pack formats and label details; they are not a list of products offered in the Joybuy section.

KP

KP lists Original Salted, Dry Roasted and Honey Roast peanut snack packs in 5 x 30g multipacks.

  • Its product labels give salt figures on the same 30g basis: 0.39g, 0.51g and 0.23g respectively.
  • The flavours have different ingredients and allergen wording; check the chosen pack rather than relying on the KP name.

Tesco

Tesco’s grocery listings provide examples of individually packed KP peanuts alongside larger nut packs and a prepacked ploughman’s sandwich.

  • Tesco lists 1.30g salt per pack for its Ploughmans Sandwich, a useful reminder to consider the main lunch as well as the nuts.
  • A larger nut pack needs portioning if the aim is a separate grab bag for each lunch.

M&S

M&S describes pocket-sized mixed-nut options and lists a separate 75g Nut Collection containing almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews and hazelnuts.

  • The 75g Nut Collection lists 0.02g salt per 100g; compare its serving size with any smaller pack you are considering.
  • M&S labels that Nut Collection unsuitable for people with nut, peanut or sesame allergy. The 75g product is not a 30g individual pack.

Joybuy product options

These options cover an individually packed dry-roasted peanut multipack, a mixed-nut and dried-fruit sachet multipack, and a single pack of sweet chestnuts. Their flavours and pack sizes suit different approaches to a ploughman’s lunch.

KP Snacks Dry Roasted Peanuts 5 x 30g multipack

KP Snacks Dry Roasted Peanuts 5 x 30g

Five separate 30g bags make this a seasoned peanut option for repeat packed lunches. KP lists 0.51g salt per 30g for its Dry Roasted Snack Pack; compare the label with the other savoury parts of the lunch, and check its ingredients and allergen wording before serving.

J.ZAO Classic Daily-Nut Mix 750g, 30 sachets

J.ZAO Classic Daily-Nut Mix 750g, 30 sachets

The 30-sachet format offers separately packed portions for multiple lunches. This is a nut and dried-fruit mix rather than plain savoury peanuts, so check whether its ingredients suit the lunch and anyone who will eat it.

Three Squirrels Light Pack Sweet Chestnut Kernels 50g

Three Squirrels Light Pack Sweet Chestnut Kernels 50g

This single 50g pack offers sweet chestnut kernels rather than a savoury peanut snack. It suits a lunch where that flavour is wanted, but one pack does not provide separate portions for several lunches; check its current ingredients and allergen information before serving.

Questions about nut grab bags

Which peanut flavour fits a savoury ploughman’s lunch?

Plain salted peanuts keep the addition savoury: KP Original Salted lists peanuts, sunflower oil and salt. Choose honey roast if you want a sweet contrast, or dry roasted if you prefer a more seasoned flavour; check each pack’s ingredients rather than treating the flavours as interchangeable.

Are 30g nut packs useful for packed lunches?

They provide a separate, defined amount for each lunch. KP lists its Original Salted, Dry Roasted and Honey Roast peanut snack packs in 5 x 30g multipacks, so check both the individual bag weight and the number of bags when choosing a format.

Does honey roast have less salt than the other KP snack packs?

On KP’s per-30g labels, Honey Roast has 0.23g salt, compared with 0.39g for Original Salted and 0.51g for Dry Roasted. Honey Roast also lists sugar, honey and glucose syrup and contains 4.2g sugars per 30g, so consider flavour and ingredients alongside salt.

Should I check salt in the rest of the lunch?

Yes: compare the nut pack’s salt with labelled components of the whole lunch. Tesco lists 1.30g salt per pack for its Ploughmans Sandwich, while NHS guidance says adults should have no more than 6g salt a day from all food and added salt.

Can a mixed-nut bag replace peanuts for someone with an allergy?

Do not assume a mixed-nut bag is suitable. GOV.UK lists peanuts and tree nuts among allergens that food businesses must declare when present as ingredients, and products can also carry precautionary wording. Check the current label of the exact pack; M&S, for example, labels its 75g Nut Collection unsuitable for people with nut, peanut or sesame allergy.
