Commuters choosing a portable breakfast snack
A multipack bag is easy to take on a journey or to a desk. If lower fat matters, compare the nutrition figures per 100g rather than assuming that a small serving is a low-fat product.
Ready-to-eat popcorn can be a portable part of breakfast, but a small bag or a lightly salted flavour does not establish that it is low in fat. Compare fat per 100g before checking how much is in the bag you will eat; the three products in the Waitrose, DDC Foods and Tesco listings discussed below all exceed the NHS low-fat threshold of 3g per 100g. If popcorn is your breakfast snack, consider it alongside other foods: the British Dietetic Association advises including foods such as fruit or vegetables, wholegrains, healthy fats and protein at breakfast.
A multipack bag is easy to take on a journey or to a desk. If lower fat matters, compare the nutrition figures per 100g rather than assuming that a small serving is a low-fat product.
Check sugars as well as fat when comparing flavours. The Waitrose listing for PROPER Sea Salted declares 0.6g sugars per 100g, while Tesco declares 22.6g per 100g for its Sweet & Salted multipack; their pack sizes differ too.
Popcorn may be one convenient item, rather than the whole meal. The British Dietetic Association advises including a mix of foods at breakfast, such as fruit or vegetables, wholegrains, healthy fats and protein.
Start with the per-100g panel to compare different bags on the same basis. Then check the serving you would actually take with you and whether you want other foods alongside it.
| Priority | What to check | Your needs |
|---|---|---|
| Total fat | Compare fat per 100g, then look at the amount per bag. The NHS defines a low-fat food as containing 3g fat or less per 100g. | I want to compare fat across pack sizes without mistaking a small portion for a low-fat product. The DDC Foods listing gives Metcalfe’s Sweet ’N’ Salt as 16.7g fat per 100g, Waitrose gives PROPER Sea Salted as 17.4g, and Tesco gives its Sweet & Salted popcorn as 26.2g; none meets the NHS low-fat threshold. |
| Sugars and salt | Read both figures per 100g, especially when comparing flavoured varieties. Where shown, traffic-light labelling indicates whether fat, saturates, sugars and salt are high, medium or low. | For a savoury choice, I still want to check salt. Waitrose declares 0.6g sugars and 1.09g salt per 100g for PROPER Sea Salted; Tesco declares 22.6g sugars and 1.19g salt per 100g for its Sweet & Salted popcorn. |
| Bag size | Check the weight of an individual bag and the serving count on a larger pack. Do not assume a sharing bag represents one serving. | A single bag may be simpler to carry. Waitrose lists PROPER Sea Salted as a 6 × 10g multipack, while its 70g sharing-bag listing says the pack contains approximately three servings; Tesco’s Sweet & Salted multipack contains 14g bags. |
| Breakfast mix | Decide what else you will have with the popcorn. The British Dietetic Association advises including foods such as fruit or vegetables, wholegrains, healthy fats and protein at breakfast. | If popcorn is the item I can take quickly, I can plan another suitable breakfast food alongside it rather than treating the snack bag as the entire meal. |
Tesco lists 71 kcal for each 14g bag of its Sweet & Salted popcorn, but also declares 26.2g fat per 100g. That exceeds the NHS low-fat threshold of 3g per 100g.
Use the per-100g figure to compare products, then the per-bag figure to understand the amount you would eat.
Flavour choices can change the comparison. Tesco’s Sweet & Salted popcorn declares 22.6g sugars per 100g, compared with 0.6g per 100g for the PROPER Sea Salted product listed by Waitrose.
If sugars matter to your choice, compare that line on the nutrition panels as well as fat and salt.
A bag of popcorn is convenient, but it does not by itself provide the range of foods described in the British Dietetic Association’s breakfast guidance.
Consider what fruit or vegetables and protein-containing food you could have alongside it, according to your preferences and dietary requirements.
Waitrose says the 70g PROPER sharing bag contains approximately three servings. Pack warnings also matter: the PROPER Sea Salted listing includes a may-contain-milk warning, and popcorn listings can warn about un-popped kernels.
Check the current physical pack for serving information, allergens and handling warnings before eating.
These examples show why flavour and pack format need checking product by product; the figures describe the named varieties, not every popcorn sold under each name.
Waitrose lists Sea Salted popcorn in both a 70g sharing bag and a 6 × 10g multipack.
Valeo Foods UK lists sweet and sea-salt varieties in the Metcalfe’s popcorn range. A DDC Foods wholesale listing gives nutrition figures for Sweet ’N’ Salt.
Tesco’s own-label Sweet & Salted Popcorn comes in a 6 × 14g multipack, offering individually packed portions.
These ready-to-eat multipacks and sharing bags offer different flavours and portion formats for a breakfast snack. If reducing fat is your main aim, compare each current pack’s fat per 100g before choosing on flavour or bag size.

Each 12g bag is a portable sweet popcorn snack. Check the pack’s fat and sugars per 100g before deciding whether this flavour fits what you want from a breakfast component.
Not necessarily. The NHS low-fat threshold for foods is 3g fat or less per 100g, regardless of bag size. The named Metcalfe’s, PROPER and Tesco products listed by DDC Foods, Waitrose and Tesco declare between 16.7g and 26.2g fat per 100g, so none meets that threshold.
Among the three named products, the PROPER Sea Salted popcorn listed by Waitrose declares the least sugar, at 0.6g per 100g. DDC Foods declares 11.1g for Metcalfe’s Sweet ’N’ Salt and Tesco declares 22.6g for its Sweet & Salted popcorn. Check salt separately if that also matters to your choice.
Popcorn can be one portable part of breakfast, but consider other foods alongside it rather than relying on the snack bag alone. The British Dietetic Association advises including foods such as fruit or vegetables, wholegrains, healthy fats and protein at breakfast.
Compare their nutrition figures per 100g first, then check the amount in the bag you expect to eat. NHS food-label guidance explains the per-100g basis, while UK government guidance says traffic-light labelling, where shown, indicates levels of fat, saturates, sugars and salt.
Read the current physical pack for allergens, serving information and warnings. The PROPER Sea Salted listing includes a may-contain-milk warning, and the PROPER and Tesco product information warns that un-popped kernels may occur.
