Who might use one?

Spreadsheet-first home organisers

If you review item lists alongside locations, values and supporting documents, screen orientation and room for columns may matter more to you than gaming-focused specifications.

Room-to-room inventory checkers

If you compare records with belongings throughout the home, consider what you will carry as well as the screen: its stand, protection, cables and power arrangement all affect setup.

Touch-led record updaters

If you want to tap or scroll directly on the second screen, check touch support for your device and operating system before making it a deciding feature.

What matters when choosing?

Start with the device you already use for your inventory, then decide whether workspace, repeated carrying or direct touch is your main reason for adding a screen.

ConcernWhat to checkWho this matters to
Connection and power Check whether your device supports the monitor’s USB-C video method, such as DisplayPort Alt Mode, or has an output for its alternative input. Confirm how the monitor receives power. If my existing device cannot send video to the screen, its other features will not help me review my inventory. Around 36% of consumers put connection and power compatibility first.
Document workspace Compare native resolution, aspect ratio and stand adjustment; check how portrait orientation works on your device. Long item lists, receipts and photographs make me want space to read and compare records without repeatedly rearranging windows. For around 29% of consumers, document workspace is the primary concern.
Carrying and setup Compare stated weight and stand design, including the cables, charger or sleeve you would take between rooms. I will check belongings in several rooms, so I need a screen I can carry and set down repeatedly. That makes portability the leading need for around 21% of consumers.
Touch input Check operating-system support, required software and whether the connection carries touch data as well as video. I want to tap through photos or update records on the second display rather than return to the keyboard. Around 14% of consumers place direct touch input first.

Buying pitfalls

  • Assuming every USB-C port sends video

A USB-C connector does not establish what the port can do. ASUS UK Support says plug-and-play display requires video functionality on both the computer and monitor ports.

Check your device’s specification against the monitor’s stated input method. If USB-C video support is uncertain, consider a model with an input your device does support, and check its power requirements separately.

  • Assuming touch works with every device

Touch is a separate compatibility question from displaying a picture. ViewSonic says TD1655 touch feedback does not apply to iOS or iPadOS, while macOS requires vTouch software.

Before choosing a touch model, confirm support for your operating system, required software and touch-data connection.

  • Expecting a portable screen to power itself

A portable monitor need not contain a battery. LG UK says the +view 16MR70 has no built-in battery, and its laptop-charging arrangement depends on a suitable charger.

Check the chosen model’s power requirements and any conditions for charging a connected laptop.

For the LG +view 16MR70 charging setup, a suitable USB-C charger is sold separately.

Brands to consider

ASUS

The ZenScreen MB16AHV illustrates a Full HD setup with two full-function USB-C ports, mini-HDMI, a kickstand and portrait or landscape positioning, according to ASUS UK Store.

  • The MB16AHV offers more than one physical video-input route.
  • Its automatic orientation function uses ASUS DisplayWidget Center software; check software and host support rather than assuming the screen will rotate automatically.

ViewSonic

ViewSonic United Kingdom describes the VA1655 as a non-touch Full HD option with USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode and mini-HDMI, while the TD1655 offers 10-point touch.

  • These models illustrate a choice between conventional display use and direct touch interaction.
  • ViewSonic says TD1655 touch feedback is not applicable to iOS or iPadOS and requires vTouch software on macOS.

Lenovo

Lenovo Product Specifications Reference lists the ThinkVision M14 as a 14-inch Full HD monitor weighing 0.598 kg, with an integrated stand and two USB-C ports supporting DisplayPort Alt Mode.

  • Its specified weight and adjustable tilt are relevant when carrying a screen between rooms.
  • Check that the device you plan to connect can provide the required USB-C video connection.

LG

LG UK specifies a 16-inch, 16:10 WQXGA (2560 × 1600) panel for the +view 16MR70, offering a taller display layout for laptop-based document work.

  • Its stated resolution and aspect ratio give shoppers concrete workspace specifications to compare.
  • LG specifies laptop use, no built-in battery, and a connected device supporting DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery output above 7.5 W.

Common questions

Will any USB-C laptop port run a portable monitor?

No. ASUS UK Support says plug-and-play display requires video functionality on both the laptop’s USB-C port and the monitor. Check the laptop specification for the chosen monitor’s connection method; some USB-based display setups instead require a DisplayLink driver.

Is mini-HDMI worth having alongside USB-C?

It offers another video-input route if you use devices with HDMI output or cannot confirm USB-C video support. ViewSonic lists both USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode and mini-HDMI for the VA1655; check the chosen monitor’s power arrangement as well, because an HDMI video connection does not establish how it is powered.

Will touch work when I connect my tablet or laptop?

Only if the particular monitor, device and operating system support the touch connection. ViewSonic says TD1655 touch feedback does not apply to iOS or iPadOS and requires vTouch software on macOS, so check your intended device before choosing it for direct record updates.

Can a portable monitor charge my laptop?

Some can under specified power conditions, but charging is not implied by a USB-C connector. LG UK says the +view 16MR70 can charge a connected laptop at up to 45 W with a suitable separately sold USB-C charger; check the monitor’s charging conditions against your laptop and charger.
