Who needs a second screen?

Planners reviewing detailed drawings

If you move between a site, hotel and office, a second screen can hold plans or schedules alongside your laptop work. A higher-resolution 16:10 model offers more pixel space than an FHD model, but check that your laptop can drive its specified connection.

Coordinators working at small desks

A monitor that fits beside a laptop needs a practical stand as well as a place in your luggage. Compare the weight of the complete setup, its adjustment options and its power requirements before relying on an unfamiliar hotel-room desk.

People presenting visual options

If you share layouts or finish references with someone else, consider viewing position and the exact model’s display specifications. Touch may help with interaction, but a touch specification alone does not establish that your planning software supports the intended gestures or pen work.

What matters when choosing?

For a temporary planning desk, settle the laptop connection first, then balance drawing space with the monitor you can carry and position comfortably.

ConcernWhat to checkWho this matters to
Laptop connection Check the laptop’s USB-C video capability against the monitor’s required mode. For an alternative input, confirm the cable and any driver requirement. If my hotel-room setup must work as soon as I connect it, an unexpected video or driver problem takes priority over display features. Around 36% of consumers put connection reliability first.
Space for plans Compare native resolution and aspect ratio, then check whether text and drawing details remain comfortable at your preferred scaling. When I need plans, schedules and reference pages in view, I want enough workspace without making text difficult to read. Roughly 29% of consumers prioritise that detailed-plan workspace.
Travel and desk fit Compare the carried setup, including cables and case, and check how much desk depth the stand needs. I move the screen between locations and may have little room beside my laptop, so easy positioning matters more than a larger panel. About 21% of consumers put carrying and desk fit first.
Shared visual review Check the exact model’s viewing specifications and whether your software supports the touch or pen functions you intend to use. If I discuss finishes or layouts with someone else, I need a view we can both use; touch matters only if it fits our workflow. Around 14% of consumers prioritise visual review or interaction.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every USB-C port carries video

A USB-C port may provide charging or data without the video output required by a portable monitor.

Check the laptop’s port specification against the monitor’s connection requirements. If you plan to use a DisplayLink connection, confirm its driver requirements and any workplace IT restrictions.

A different adapter or a driver-supported display setup may be needed.

  • Choosing by screen size alone

Diagonal size does not tell you how much pixel space is available for drawings or whether text will be comfortable at your chosen scaling.

Compare native resolution and aspect ratio alongside physical size, then consider how your planning applications display documents on that combination.

  • Assuming power pass-through guarantees laptop charging

Pass-through limits and adapter requirements depend on the monitor and the rest of the charging setup. ASUS states that the ZenScreen MB16NCG needs an adapter supplying up to 80 W to reach its maximum 65 W Power Delivery.

Check the monitor’s pass-through rating, the laptop’s charging requirement, the cable and the charger together; do not rely on an unconfirmed room USB socket.

Reaching the stated maximum may require a higher-output USB-C charger.

  • Overlooking work-equipment procedures

For employer-controlled equipment used as part of work in the UK, the Health and Safety Executive says employers must maintain electrical equipment to prevent danger. An annual portable appliance testing label is not, by itself, a universal requirement or a substitute for checking equipment condition.

Check your employer’s and venue’s applicable procedures, and inspect plugs and cables before setting up.

Brands to consider for portable monitors

Lenovo

ThinkVision mobile monitors include compact screens for laptop-based workspaces, with resolution and touch options varying by model.

  • Lenovo lists the ThinkVision M14d with a 14-inch, 2240 × 1400, 16:10 display and USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode connectivity.
  • The ThinkVision M14t Gen 2 is a separate touch-enabled model with active-stylus support.
  • Check laptop video compatibility, and confirm that your software can use touch or pen input before choosing it for mark-ups.

Dell

The Dell Pro 14 Plus P1425 offers a compact 16:10 option for a laptop-based desk.

  • Dell specifies a 14-inch 1920 × 1200 display, anti-glare surface, tilt stand and two USB-C ports with DisplayPort 1.2 Alt Mode and up to 65 W power pass-through.
  • The P1425 is listed without a touch screen. If HDMI is essential, confirm the input options for the exact model before choosing it.

ASUS

The ZenScreen range includes models with differing screen sizes and connection options.

  • ASUS lists the 16-inch ZenScreen MB16NCG with a 2560 × 1600, 16:10 panel, two USB-C ports and mini-HDMI.
  • Connection and power requirements remain model-specific. ASUS says an adapter supplying up to 80 W is needed for the MB16NCG to reach its maximum 65 W Power Delivery.

Common questions

Will any USB-C laptop work with a USB-C portable monitor?

No: USB-C does not always carry video. For a monitor using DisplayPort Alt Mode, check that the laptop port supports video output; if you intend to use a USB data or DisplayLink connection instead, check the monitor’s driver requirements.

Is 1920 × 1200 enough for reviewing renovation plans?

A 1920 × 1200 second screen can suit schedules and ordinary document review, while a higher-resolution option provides more pixels for detailed plans or several windows. Compare the physical screen size too, and check that text remains comfortable at your chosen scaling.

Can a portable monitor charge my laptop?

Some models offer USB-C power pass-through, but the available output and required charger differ. Dell specifies up to 65 W pass-through for the P1425; ASUS says the MB16NCG needs an adapter supplying up to 80 W to reach its maximum 65 W Power Delivery. Check your laptop’s charging requirement as well.

Does a work monitor in a UK hotel room need annual PAT testing?

The Health and Safety Executive does not prescribe a universal annual portable appliance testing interval for every item in a low-risk environment. Its guidance says employers must maintain electrical equipment to prevent danger; check any applicable employer and venue procedures for your work setup.

Will touch make it easier to mark up renovation plans?

Touch is useful for mark-ups only if your laptop setup and planning software support the interaction you intend. Lenovo specifies touch and active-stylus support for the ThinkVision M14t Gen 2, but those monitor features alone do not establish compatibility with a particular drawing or PDF application.
