What matters when choosing?
Decide whether you need to carry the speaker throughout a trip or take it to one listening spot. Then check its outdoor protection, playback claim and charging arrangements against how you plan to use it.
| Concern |
What to check |
Who this matters to |
| Outdoor protection |
Check the exact model's IP rating and the maker's water, dust and handling conditions; impact resistance is a separate claim. |
If I expect rain, splashes or dusty ground, I want protection suited to that setting rather than a general outdoor label. Around 27% of consumers put outdoor resilience first. |
| Packability |
Compare weight and dimensions, then check for a strap, loop or clip if you need one. |
When I am walking or packing light, I need a speaker I can carry comfortably for the whole trip. Carrying burden is the primary concern for around 27% of consumers. |
| Playback and charging |
Check the conditions behind claimed battery hours, charge time and the supplied cable and adaptor. |
For a long outing, I want playback to last without counting on a charging stop, especially if the music will be loud. Around 26% of consumers prioritise runtime. |
| Group listening |
Consider the listening group and whether you need compatible speaker pairing or microphone and guitar inputs; assess the larger model's carrying burden. |
If music is for a group at one location, I am more willing to transport a larger speaker than compromise on the functions I need there. Group-listening needs come first for around 20% of consumers. |

Common questions
Does IP67 mean I can use a speaker in any weather?
No. IP67 applies to the named model under specified test conditions, not every outdoor situation. Check the product manual for its water, dust and handling limits; other models, including ones from the same brand, may have different ratings.
Will the quoted battery hours last through a loud park gathering?
Do not count on the quoted hours at every volume. Which? tests battery life at moderate volume, and Bose warns that continuous high-volume use can substantially shorten playback on the SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen). Leave a margin when planning a long gathering.
Does USB-C charging mean a mains adaptor comes with the speaker?
No. USB-C identifies the charging connection, not the contents of the box. Bose lists a cable but no power adaptor for the SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen); check the supplied items and power requirements for the model you choose.
Can I pair any two speakers from the same brand?
No. Pairing depends on the particular models and mode. Ultimate Ears says WONDERBOOM 4 does not connect with several earlier WONDERBOOM, BOOM, MEGABOOM and HYPERBOOM models, so check compatibility before planning a two-speaker setup.
How should I dispose of a speaker with an internal rechargeable battery?
Use an appropriate electrical-waste collection route rather than household rubbish. GOV.UK advises taking electrical products and batteries to suitable recycling collection points; follow local instructions for the speaker and its battery.
