What should you check before choosing?
Start with the occasion and the number of portions you need, then compare flavours and labels. In a Food Standards Agency and Ipsos Northern Ireland survey of 611 consumers interviewed from 16 September to 23 November 2024, the traffic-light figures concerned food shopping generally, not crisp packs or large families.
| Priority | What to check | Your needs |
| Usable portions |
Count the inner bags and check their weight. Compare the total pack weight with the portions you expect to use. |
I need enough individual bags for lunches without choosing flavours that will be left uneaten. |
| Ingredients and allergens |
Read each included flavour’s ingredients and allergen declaration. Check precautionary statements as well as named ingredients. |
Everyone at home must be able to identify which flavours, if any, suit their dietary requirements. |
| Nutrition and serving size |
Compare energy, fat, saturates and salt on the same per-100g basis, then check the stated serving. Use front-of-pack traffic lights where shown. |
I want to compare the amount likely to be eaten, not assume that every bag is one standard serving. In the Food Standards Agency and Ipsos Northern Ireland survey, 92% of respondents recognised traffic-light labelling and 49% actively used it when shopping for food. |
| Sharing or lunchboxes |
Decide whether you need sealed individual bags or one bag to divide into bowls. Check the sharing pack’s serving and once-opened storage instructions. |
For a shared snack, I can divide one bag between people; for lunches, unopened individual bags are easier to allocate. |

Common questions
How do I compare multipacks with different bag counts?
Check both the number of bags and the weight of each bag, then consider how many flavours your household will use. A larger box provides more portions only if its bag count is higher, and it may include flavours that do not suit everyone.
How should I use traffic-light labels on crisp packs?
Where a front-of-pack traffic-light label appears, use it alongside the nutrition panel to compare energy, fat, saturates, sugars and salt. Check that you are comparing figures on the same per-100g or per-serving basis; GOV.UK’s food-label guidance notes that front-of-pack traffic lights are not shown on every prepacked product.
Does a gluten-free label cover other food allergies?
No. Check the ingredients and precautionary allergen wording for the exact flavour. For example, Ocado lists Pipers Burrow Hill Cider Vinegar & Sea Salt as containing milk and possibly containing wheat, barley and soya.
When does a sharing bag make more sense than a multipack?
A sharing bag fits an occasion when several people will eat crisps together and you can divide the contents into portions. Choose individually sealed bags when you need to allocate snacks across packed lunches; for an opened sharing bag, follow the pack’s storage instructions.
