Who needs a power bank?

All-day phone users

If commuting, an event or a day out could leave your phone short of power, compare usable energy with the phone battery and leave a margin for using the phone while it charges. Which? highlights delivered charges and size as buying considerations; Anker Support explains that nominal capacity describes the bank's internal cells.

Fast-charge and USB-C users

If you need a short wired top-up or also carry a tablet, check what your device accepts, what the chosen port supplies and whether the cable is suitable. Belkin's BPB027 specifications show why output with one device need not match output when two are connected.

Minimal-carry commuters

If carrying a separate cable is the inconvenience, an integrated-cable model is worth considering. Check that its connector fits your device, then compare the bank's dimensions and weight with the space you actually have.

What matters when choosing?

For a long day away from a plug, identify your main priority before comparing capacity, carrying size, charging speed and the number of devices you need to connect.

ConcernWhat to checkWho this matters to
Usable reserve Compare usable output energy in Wh, where stated, with your device battery's Wh. Allow for using the device while charging. When my phone must last through commuting and an event, I want enough reserve without assuming the printed mAh figure equals energy delivered to it. About 31% of consumers would put usable reserve first.
Carry convenience Check dimensions and weight, plus the connector on any integrated cable. If a separate cable is easy to forget, I would rather carry a convenient setup, provided its connector fits my phone. Carry convenience would come first for about 25% of consumers.
Charging and refill speed Match your device's wired charging requirements to the bank's output; check its input rating for refilling the bank. With little time to top up between stops, I need a compatible charging arrangement and a bank I can refill when power is available. Roughly 25% of consumers would prioritise charging and refill speed.
Tablet or shared use Check port types and combined output, then compare usable energy with the devices you plan to charge. When a tablet or another person's device needs power too, one phone's reserve is not enough to plan around. Multi-device support would be the main concern for about 19% of consumers.

Checks that are easy to miss

  • Reading nominal mAh as delivered capacity

The battery-cell rating is not the amount your phone necessarily receives at USB output. Anker Support distinguishes internal-cell capacity from output capacity, while conversion also affects the energy available to a device.

Use a stated usable output capacity or Wh figure where available, compare it with your device battery's Wh, and leave a margin rather than promising yourself a fixed number of charges.

  • Assuming every USB-C connection charges at the same speed

A matching connector does not establish the charging mode agreed between device and power bank. The USB Implementers Forum's cable power markings describe cable capability, not the whole charging arrangement.

Check the device's accepted wired charging mode, the selected port's output and the cable's connector and power capability.

  • Treating single-port power as shared power

Belkin specifies 20W with one port in use on its BPB027, but 15W total with two devices connected. A headline output figure therefore may not describe the arrangement you intend to use.

If you will charge two devices together, find the combined-output figure as well as each port's individual rating.

  • Choosing an attached cable without checking fit

An integrated cable is useful only with a suitable connector. Delivery terms can also vary by model: Belkin's UK page for BPB006 says that model does not ship to Scotland, Northern Ireland or the Isle of Man.

Confirm the connector for each device you intend to charge and check delivery eligibility for the exact model before checkout.

Brands to consider

Anker

Anker lists USB-C power banks with integrated cables, magnetic designs and higher-capacity multi-port configurations.

  • Anker's UK listing for its Nano 10,000mAh integrated-cable model specifies 30W charging; a separate Joybuy listing describes a 20,000mAh, 30W model with two USB-C ports and one USB-A port.
  • These specifications belong to different models. Check the exact model's output, input, ports and cable against your devices rather than combining their features.

Belkin

Belkin lists 10,000mAh models with detachable or integrated cables and different port arrangements.

  • Belkin specifies 20W single-port output and 15W total with two devices for BPB027. Its separate BPB006 model has attached USB-C and Lightning cables.
  • Do not assume either configuration applies across the range. Belkin's UK page also excludes Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man from delivery for BPB006.

INIU

INIU lists USB-C power banks, including a B61 model with multiple ports.

  • INIU's own B61 listing states 10,000mAh capacity, a maximum 22.5W output and USB-C input and output.
  • Check the exact listing's delivery terms, charging compatibility and output when several devices are connected before choosing it for a shared setup.

Power banks on Joybuy

These models cover integrated-cable options for a long day out, including a higher-capacity choice, alongside a magnetic wireless model for shoppers considering that phone-charging arrangement. Compare each one against your device and carrying needs.

Xiaomi 20000mAh integrated-cable power bank in GL Light Gray

Xiaomi Power Bank 20000mAh Integrated Cable, GL Light Gray

Consider this 20,000mAh integrated-cable model if a long day makes stored capacity and avoiding a separate cable important. Before relying on it for a particular phone, check connector fit, usable output energy and the charging conditions for that device; check input power and carrying size if refill time or bulk matters.

Common questions

How many times will a power bank charge my phone?

A fixed number cannot be read from nominal mAh alone. Compare a stated usable output energy in Wh with your phone battery's Wh for a planning estimate, then leave a margin for conversion losses and using the phone while it charges. Anker Support notes that the printed capacity refers to the bank's internal cells.

What do I need for USB-C fast charging?

Your device's accepted charging mode, the power bank's output on the chosen port and the cable must work together. Check combined output as well if another device will be connected. The USB Implementers Forum's USB-C cable power marking identifies cable capability, but does not guarantee a particular charging speed for your device.

Can a power bank with a USB-C cable charge a Lightning phone?

An attached USB-C-to-USB-C cable will not fit a Lightning port. Check whether the bank offers a suitable separate connection or an integrated Lightning cable; Belkin lists both attached USB-C and Lightning cables on its BPB006 model.

Why might a larger power bank take longer to refill?

Refill time depends on the bank's input limit and the charger used, as well as the energy being replenished. Check the input specification and the conditions attached to any stated refill time rather than assuming the bank's device-output wattage also describes its input.

What should I do with an old power bank in the UK?

Do not put it in household rubbish. GOV.UK guidance directs consumers to use appropriate collection routes for batteries and electrical waste; check your local collection arrangements, particularly if the power bank is damaged.
