Who are these packs for?

Desk-drawer snack planners

Individually wrapped bars are straightforward to take to work or carry while commuting. A mixed box lets you try several flavours before deciding whether a larger supply of one flavour suits you.

Protein-focused sweet-snack buyers

If the stated protein amount is part of your choice, compare it alongside energy, serving size and flavour. Glanbia Nutritionals’ survey of UK and Irish protein-bar consumers identified taste and protein as important attributes; neither tells you the full nutrition profile of a particular bar.

Allergen- or ingredient-conscious buyers

Mixed boxes may contain bars with different ingredients. Check every included flavour’s ingredient and precautionary allergen wording, as well as any sweetener-related warning, before choosing a pack.

What should you compare?

Start with how many bars and flavours you want to commit to, then compare the serving information and labels for the bars you would actually eat mid-morning.

Priority What to check Your needs
Flavour variety Check the number of flavours as well as bars. Grenade UK lists 12 flavours in its 12-bar selection box, Myprotein UK lists five in its 12-bar Layered box, and Barebells UK lists four in its 12-pack. Grenade says its flavours can vary. I would rather try several flavours than commit to a whole case of one I have not tasted.
Pack commitment Compare a mixed box with a smaller multipack or a single bar. Tesco Groceries has listed several multipack sizes and individual bars; check the exact product, as the formats and nutrition differ. A few bars may be enough for occasional desk snacks, while a larger box makes more sense if I know I will use it.
Portion and protein Read energy, protein and serving size per bar, not just per 100g. Myprotein UK lists 15g protein and 194–198 kcal for the named Crispy Wafer flavours; its Triple Chocolate Layered Bar example lists 20g protein and 212 kcal per 60g serving. Values can differ by flavour. For my mid-morning break, I want to compare the portion I will actually eat, rather than choose by the protein figure alone.
Full nutrition panel For the exact flavour, compare sugars, saturated fat, fibre and energy per bar. A front-of-pack protein or sugar statement does not describe all of these values. One prominent claim is not enough for me to judge how a bar fits alongside my other food that day.
Ingredients and warnings Check each flavour’s declared allergens, any “may contain” statement and warnings about excessive consumption. Myprotein UK lists milk, wheat and soya ingredients in its Crispy Wafer box and says the bars may contain nuts. If an ingredient matters to me, I need the label for every flavour in the box, not an assumption based on one bar.
Texture Decide whether you want a crisp wafer or a layered bar, then check its stated serving and flavour. A difference in texture does not establish which bar will suit everyone’s appetite. Some mornings I would prefer a crisp bar; on others, the layered format may be more appealing.

Buying pitfalls

  • Checking only one flavour’s allergens

A variety box can contain different ingredient lists. Barebells UK’s listed Caramel Cashew bar contains milk, cashew and peanut, while Myprotein UK’s wafer varieties include milk, wheat and soya ingredients and may contain nuts.

Read the ingredients and precautionary allergen wording for every relevant flavour before buying a mixed box.

  • Judging the whole snack by one front-of-pack claim

Serving sizes and energy differ between named products: Myprotein UK lists 194–198 kcal for its Crispy Wafer flavours, while PhD lists 250 kcal per 64g Choc Brownie Smart Bar. Those figures do not describe every bar in either brand’s range.

Compare the exact flavour’s per-bar energy, sugars, saturated fat, fibre and protein for the snack occasion you have in mind.

  • Treating a large selection box as a small trial

A mixed 10- or 12-bar box still commits you to several bars, including flavours you may not enjoy.

If texture or flavour is unfamiliar, consider an individual bar or smaller multipack before choosing a larger box.

  • Confusing a single-flavour multipack with a variety box

Four or 12 bars of one flavour will not let you test the mix offered by a selection box, even when the brand and bar name look similar.

Check the listing’s bar count and flavour details against the pack you intend to buy.

Brand and retailer references

These examples illustrate different pack formats; a brand’s inclusion here does not mean that its mixed box appears among the Joybuy products below.

Grenade

Grenade UK lists a 12-bar selection box with 12 named flavours for trying its range.

  • The listed mix offers one named flavour per bar.
  • Grenade says flavours can vary and gives allergen and excessive-consumption warnings; check the bars included in the box you buy.

Myprotein

Myprotein UK lists a 12-bar Layered Bar Variety Box and a Crispy Wafer Variety Box with five named flavours.

  • Its product information states 20g protein for the Layered bars and 15g per Crispy Wafer bar; compare the exact flavour’s panel.
  • Layered Bar nutrition may vary by flavour. The wafer ingredients include milk, wheat and soya, and the pack says it may contain nuts.

Barebells

Barebells UK lists a 12-pack selection box containing four named flavours.

  • Its listed Caramel Cashew bar has 20g protein and 200 kcal per 55g bar.
  • That Caramel Cashew bar contains milk, cashew and peanut; its label does not stand in for the other flavours’ labels.

PhD

PhD’s Smart Protein Bar 12-pack is a single-flavour case for someone who has already chosen a flavour.

  • Its Choc Brownie example lists 21g protein and 250 kcal per 64g bar.
  • A case of one flavour does not provide the tasting range of a mixed box; other flavours’ serving information may differ.

Quest

Quest Nutrition describes a protein bar variety pack on its official product page.

  • The page describes a pack assembled from flavour boxes rather than one single-flavour case.
  • Its displayed shipping information is for the US. Check an exact UK product listing and its labels before considering it for this purchase.

Tesco

Tesco Groceries is a retailer reference for individual protein bars and smaller multipacks, not one bar formula.

  • Its category has listed individual bars alongside 3-, 4- and 8-bar multipacks.
  • Check each product’s pack format, ingredients and nutrition rather than treating the category as a like-for-like selection box.

Joybuy single-flavour options

These Grenade packs offer one flavour per pack: three 12-bar Soft Core cases, an Oreo Flavour four-pack and an Oreo Flavour 12-bar case. They are options for repeating or trying a particular flavour, not substitutes for a mixed-flavour grab bag.

Grenade Soft Core Double Chocolate protein bars, 12 x 50g

Grenade Soft Core Double Chocolate, 12 x 50g

A 12-bar case for someone who wants Double Chocolate as a regular mid-morning flavour rather than a mixed tasting box. The pack name states 12 x 50g; check the individual bar’s ingredients and nutrition before choosing it.

Grenade Soft Core Golden Caramel protein bars, 12 x 50g

Grenade Soft Core Golden Caramel, 12 x 50g

This 12 x 50g single-flavour case suits someone choosing Golden Caramel repeatedly, but it will not help compare flavours. Check the individual bar’s ingredients and nutrition for your intended snack.

Grenade Soft Core Peanut Butter protein bars, 12 x 50g

Grenade Soft Core Peanut Butter, 12 x 50g

The 12 x 50g case is for someone choosing Peanut Butter rather than sampling several flavours. The product information identifies milk, soya and peanut; check the full label and any precautionary wording if these ingredients matter to you.

Grenade Oreo Flavour protein bars, 4 x 60g

Grenade Oreo Flavour, 4 x 60g

This four-pack commits you to fewer Oreo Flavour bars than a 12-bar case, though all four are the same flavour. The pack contains 4 x 60g bars; check the exact bar’s ingredient and nutrition information before buying.

Grenade Oreo Flavour protein bars, 12 x 60g

Grenade Oreo Flavour, 12 x 60g

Choose this 12 x 60g single-flavour case only if you want a larger supply of Oreo Flavour rather than a variety pack. Check the individual bar’s nutrition, ingredients and allergen wording for your mid-morning choice.

Questions about protein bar packs

Does a mixed box make sense for a mid-morning snack?

A mixed box makes sense if you want several individually wrapped flavours and expect to use the whole pack. Compare the per-bar serving information and ingredients for the flavours included; a smaller multipack is less of a commitment if you are still testing a texture or flavour.

Can I judge a protein bar by its protein claim alone?

No. Compare the exact flavour’s protein, energy, sugars, saturated fat and serving size on its nutrition panel. These values can differ between bar formats and flavours, so a protein figure alone does not describe the whole snack.

Why do some packs carry a laxative-effect warning?

Grenade UK’s selection box and PhD’s Smart Bar product information warn that excessive consumption may cause laxative effects. Read and follow the warning on the bars you buy rather than assuming that a multipack is intended to be eaten in one sitting.

How do I check allergens in a variety box?

Read the ingredients and allergen wording for every included flavour, including any “may contain” statement. The Food Standards Agency explains that precautionary allergen labelling communicates possible unintentional presence of a regulated allergen; one flavour’s label cannot establish what is in every other bar.

Is a single-flavour multipack the same as a grab bag?

No. A single-flavour multipack gives you several bars of one flavour, while a mixed selection box contains different flavours. Check both the bar count and the named flavours on the exact listing before deciding which format suits you.
