Who is this for?

Colour-conscious quest-map designers

If terrain colours, icons and faction boundaries need to remain intelligible when a map is shared or exported, check the colour space required by the destination alongside the monitor’s stated coverage and calibration options.

Two-device shared-desk users

If two computers must use one display, keyboard and mouse, look beyond the presence of USB-C. Check the video inputs and how the peripherals switch between computers; laptop charging is a separate requirement.

Space-limited map makers

If the desk also holds reference materials or is used by someone else, consider screen size, desk depth and stand adjustment together. A detailed canvas is useful only if each user can position it suitably.

What matters when choosing?

For a quest-map monitor at a shared desk, identify the requirement you would least want to compromise, then check the corresponding display, connection or positioning details.

Concern What to check Who this matters to
Map detail and colour Check native resolution and the stated coverage of the colour space your output needs, such as sRGB, Rec.709 or P3. If colour matching matters, check the calibration provision too. I need to inspect small labels and colour-coded routes, then prepare a map for a particular screen or print workflow. Around 36% of consumers put map detail and colour first.
Shared-device switching Check video inputs and explicit KVM support if two computers must share a keyboard and mouse. Match any USB-C or Thunderbolt power delivery to the laptop’s requirements. Changing between computers should not mean reconnecting my keyboard and mouse each time. For around 29% of consumers, smooth shared-device switching is the primary need.
Desk fit and positioning Check desk depth and the stand’s height, tilt and pivot adjustments; check mounting compatibility if you plan to use an arm. Both desk users need to position the screen without crowding the rest of the workspace. Desk fit and viewing position come first for around 21% of consumers.
A simpler 4K setup Check that the display still meets your resolution and connection needs, and decide whether you would use specialist switching or calibration features. Most of my map work uses one laptop, so I would rather focus on the 4K workspace than functions I may not use. Around 14% of consumers place that simpler setup first.

What should you avoid assuming?

  • Assuming USB-C means two-computer switching

USB-C display, data and charging can simplify a compatible laptop connection, but those functions do not by themselves switch one keyboard and mouse between two computers.

If both computers need the same peripherals, check for an explicit KVM function and confirm the video and USB connections each computer requires.

Without an integrated switching arrangement, the desk may need a separate switch, additional cables or manual peripheral changes.

  • Taking an HDR label as proof of colour consistency

HDR wording, wide colour gamut and colour accuracy describe different things. None alone establishes that collaborators or a printer will see the map’s colours as intended.

Check stated colour-space coverage and any calibration provision, then choose a display mode and export workflow suited to the destination.

  • Choosing the screen without checking the workstation

An adjustable monitor stand cannot resolve every problem caused by desk depth, seating or the way two people use the space. The Health and Safety Executive advises assessing the whole workstation, including equipment, furniture and working conditions, for applicable display-screen work.

Measure the available space and check how each user will position the screen. For workplace use, consider the monitor as part of the complete workstation assessment.

A layout that does not accommodate both users may call for changes to the desk arrangement or additional mounting equipment.

Brands and models to consider

These manufacturer-listed models illustrate different ways to equip a shared creative desk; the details below apply to the named models, not every monitor from each brand.

BenQ

The BenQ PD2725U is a 27-inch 4K IPS designer monitor to consider when colour-space specifications and a two-computer peripheral workflow both matter.

  • BenQ UK lists 100% sRGB, 100% Rec.709 and 95% P3 coverage, a factory calibration report, a KVM switch and Thunderbolt 3 connections.
  • Its specified refresh rate is 60 Hz. Confirm that both computers, their cables and the intended Thunderbolt or USB-C arrangement work with your switching setup.

Dell

The Dell UltraSharp U2725QE is a 27-inch 4K hub monitor for a desk where laptop connectivity, charging and display adjustment are priorities.

  • Dell UK specifies an IPS Black panel, up to 90 W power delivery, a 120 Hz refresh rate and an adjustable stand for the U2725QE.
  • A hub and laptop charging do not alone establish the keyboard-and-mouse switching arrangement you need; confirm the required connections before choosing it for two computers.

LG

The LG UltraFine 27UP85ZK-W is a 27-inch 4K IPS USB-C option to consider when map work primarily uses one laptop.

  • LG UK states 95% DCI-P3 typical coverage, USB-C display and data connectivity with up to 90 W charging, and height, pivot and tilt adjustment.
  • If the desk must switch a keyboard and mouse between computers, confirm a suitable switching method rather than assuming USB-C provides one.

Questions about shared-desk monitors

Is a 27-inch 4K monitor a sensible size for quest-map design?

Yes, it is a useful starting point if you need a 3840 × 2160 canvas for labels, icons and reference panels without choosing a physically larger display. Size and resolution do not establish colour accuracy, so check the colour space and calibration approach needed for your output.

Will one USB-C cable let two computers share a keyboard and mouse?

Not by itself: USB-C display, data and charging for a compatible laptop are separate from switching peripherals between computers. Look for an explicit KVM function or confirm another switching setup, along with the video connections each computer needs.

When does a shared monitor need a workplace assessment?

For workers who use display-screen equipment daily for continuous periods of an hour or more as part of normal work, the Health and Safety Executive says the UK display-screen-equipment rules apply. The employer’s assessment should consider the whole workstation, including equipment, furniture and working conditions, rather than treating a new monitor as the complete solution.

Can a USB-C monitor replace a laptop charger at the desk?

It can serve that role only when the monitor’s power delivery and the laptop’s port and charging requirements are compatible. For example, LG UK states that the 27UP85ZK-W supplies up to 90 W over USB-C; check your laptop’s requirements and the cable needed for the intended display and charging connection.
