Who is choosing?

The useful pack format depends on how often you are preparing lunch, who will eat each flavour and whether anyone needs a particular ingredient label.

Households preparing lunches repeatedly

Individual bags make it straightforward to count out portions for several lunches. Check both the pack count and the weight of each bag: a multipack with more bags need not provide the portion size you want.

Families with different flavour preferences

A variety pack offers a choice without opening several sharing bags. Read its flavour breakdown first, particularly if some flavours are unlikely to be eaten.

Households checking dietary labels

Choose by the exact flavour and pack, not by a claim associated with the brand as a whole. Ingredients and precautionary allergen statements can differ between flavours.

What should you check?

Start with the number of lunches the pack needs to cover, then check flavour choice, labels and how each portion will be served.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Pack quantity Compare the number of inner bags and grams per bag. The Tesco Groceries listings include 6 × 25g, 12 × 25g and 6 × 30g formats, which provide different counts and portion sizes. I want enough separate bags for the lunches I am planning, without assuming every multipack contains the same amount.
Flavour choice Read how many bags of each flavour are included. Tesco Groceries lists four flavours in Walkers Classic Variety 12 × 25g, with three bags of each. A selection would help us use the pack, provided everyone is likely to eat the flavours included.
Ingredients Check the current ingredients, dietary statement and precautionary allergen wording for each flavour. Do not apply one flavour’s label to the rest of a variety pack. If someone needs to avoid an ingredient, I need to check the particular bags they will eat.
Serving format Check whether the pack contains individual bags or a sharing bag. Read nutrition information for the amount being served, including per-bag information where provided. For a lunch prepared in advance, I would rather use an individual bag; at home, I can divide a sharing bag before serving.

Common buying mistakes

  • Treating a sharing bag as one lunch portion

Pack formats are not interchangeable: Tyrrells states that its 150g Sea Salt & Cider Vinegar bag contains five 30g servings, while KETTLE describes the 130g bags in its selection box as sharing packs.

Choose inner bags when you want portions ready to set out, or divide a sharing bag into containers before lunch.

Dividing a sharing bag adds a preparation step and requires somewhere to put the portions.

  • Assuming a dietary claim answers every allergen question

Labels vary by product and flavour. KETTLE lists milk ingredients in cheese and sour-cream recipes, and McCoy’s says its Salt & Malt Vinegar crisps may contain milk, soya, gluten and mustard.

Read the ingredients and precautionary statements on the exact pack you are serving, even if another product in the range carries a vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free label.

  • Judging the whole lunch by a snack description

Words such as ‘vegetable’ describe a product, not the rest of the meal. REAL Crisps lists 26g sugars per 100g for its Veg Crisps; Southampton City Council’s packed-lunch guidance also discusses fruit, vegetables and water as parts of lunch.

Check the nutrition information for the crisp portion you plan to serve and choose the other lunch items separately.

Brand and range references

These examples show why pack format and flavour-specific labels matter; a brand’s range does not describe every pack within it.

Walkers

The Classic Variety 12 × 25g multipack listed by Tesco Groceries contains three bags each of Ready Salted, Cheese & Onion, Salt & Vinegar and Prawn Cocktail.

  • Separate 25g bags and a stated flavour breakdown make it possible to plan which bags to use for lunch.
  • Check ingredients by flavour; the Cheese & Onion variety contains milk.

Seabrook

Tesco Groceries lists Seabrook Sea Salted as six individual 25g bags and labels that particular product gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian.

  • The stated pack size makes it easy to count out individual portions.
  • Use the current Sea Salted label when assessing suitability; do not extend its statements to other flavours.

McCoy’s

McCoy’s lists ridged crisps and a separate Big Sharing range, so check the format as well as the flavour.

  • The range offers different savoury flavours and pack formats.
  • McCoy’s lists 1.3g salt per 100g for Salted and 2.1g per 100g for Salt & Malt Vinegar. These are different recipes, not interchangeable label values.

Tyrrells

Tyrrells lists its Sea Salt & Cider Vinegar crisps in 40g and 150g formats; the 150g bag is stated as five 30g servings.

  • The stated serving count helps with dividing the larger bag at home.
  • This recipe includes barley malt vinegar and may contain milk; check the label for the intended eater.

KETTLE

KETTLE describes its selection box as eight 130g sharing bags, rather than a box of individual lunch bags.

  • Separate sharing bags offer a choice of flavours for serving at home.
  • Dietary statements differ by recipe; the cheese and sour-cream flavours listed by KETTLE contain milk ingredients.

REAL Crisps

REAL Crisps describes its range as vegetarian and gluten-free and lists some products in individual formats, including a 35g Veg Crisps bag.

  • The brand provides product-specific ingredients and nutrition information to check alongside its range statements.
  • A vegetarian or gluten-free range statement does not settle every ingredient question: REAL lists lactose (milk) in its Ham & Colman’s Mustard flavour.

Questions about lunch packs

Can a sharing bag work for one lunch?

Yes, if you divide it into the amount you intend to serve rather than treating the whole bag as one portion. Tyrrells states that its 150g Sea Salt & Cider Vinegar bag contains five 30g servings; an individual 25g or 30g bag avoids that preparation step.

Does a brand’s vegetarian or gluten-free claim cover every flavour?

Check the exact product and flavour before relying on a dietary statement. Tesco Groceries labels Seabrook Sea Salted gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian, while KETTLE lists milk ingredients in some cheese and sour-cream recipes; neither example establishes the ingredients of another pack.

What should I check when buying for someone with a food allergy?

Read the ingredients and precautionary allergen statements on the physical pack for every flavour they may eat. Do not use an old online description or the label from a different flavour as a substitute for the current pack.
