Who this guide is for

One-desk laptop workers

Which? discusses screen size in relation to limited spaces and home-office use. If you routinely switch between documents, messages and calls at one desk, consider how much permanent screen space and adjustment your setup can accommodate.

Shared-space workers

Lenovo’s ThinkVision M14t Gen 2 is an example of a portable screen with a specified carrying setup. If you work in more than one place or need to clear your desk, consider portability alongside the cable and power arrangement for the exact screen.

Connection-conscious upgraders

The Video Electronics Standards Association explains how DisplayPort video can use USB-C Alternate Mode. If you want to avoid buying an incompatible screen or adapter, check the video output and display support of your exact laptop model first.

What to prioritise when choosing a second screen

Fixed monitor

Choose it when: You mainly work at one desk and want a larger, positionable display.

Trade-off: The screen and stand take up permanent desk space, and USB-C hub or charging features vary by model.

Portable monitor

Choose it when: You move between workspaces or need to put the screen away after work.

Trade-off: A portable screen offers less physical viewing area than a larger fixed display; check the exact model’s cable, stand and power arrangement.

Concern What to check when buying Who this matters to
Usable desk space Measure usable desk width and depth; compare the monitor’s dimensions and stand footprint. At a desk shared by my laptop and keyboard, I need enough room to keep documents and calls visible; about 31% of consumers put usable workspace first.
Laptop connection Check the exact laptop’s video output and supported display count, then compare the monitor input and cable. Before buying, I need to know that my exact laptop can drive the screen and meet its charging needs; about 31% of consumers put connection compatibility first.
Screen positioning Check height and tilt adjustment, viewing distance and, if considering an arm, compatibility with the monitor and desk. For long sessions at one desk, I want to position the screen appropriately rather than simply add display area; about 23% of consumers prioritise screen positioning.
Portability Check screen dimensions and weight, how the stand works, what is included and the video and power requirements. If I work in more than one place or need to clear the desk, I want a screen I can move or put away; about 15% of consumers prioritise portability.

Buying pitfalls to avoid

  • Assuming any USB-C socket carries video and charges a laptop

A USB-C connector’s shape does not confirm video capability, and video and power requirements need to be checked for the specific devices.

Check the laptop’s video output, the monitor input, the supplied cable and the laptop’s charging requirement before choosing a one-cable setup.

  • Buying a large screen without measuring the workspace

The screen dimensions, stand footprint and adjustment options affect whether it will fit and can be positioned usefully alongside the laptop.

Measure the desk with the laptop and keyboard in place, then compare the available space with the exact monitor’s dimensions and adjustment range.

  • Expecting a splitter to create another independent desktop

Microsoft explains that a display splitter duplicates the same signal rather than creating independent external displays.

Check the laptop’s supported number of external displays and the connection method needed for the intended extended display.

HP

The UK Series 5 Pro 524pn is a model-specific example of a 24-inch 16:10 fixed screen with adjustable positioning.

  • HP lists 1920 × 1200 resolution, height, tilt, swivel and pivot adjustment, and HDMI and DisplayPort inputs for this model.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use a second workspace instead of copying my laptop screen?

On Windows 11, connect the screen, then use Settings > System > Display to identify and arrange detected displays and select the intended display option. If it does not appear, check the connections and use Detect; Windows also documents Win+P for choosing Extend. Confirm that the laptop supports the intended number of independent displays, since a splitter duplicates a signal rather than creating separate displays, as Microsoft Support explains.

Will any USB-C laptop port drive and charge a USB-C monitor?

No; the socket shape alone does not establish that it can carry video or meet the monitor’s power requirements. Check the exact laptop’s video output, the monitor input and cable requirements, and the power needs of both devices. The manufacturer specifications for those specific models determine whether a one-cable arrangement will work.

Does my employer have to supply a monitor for hybrid home working?

Not automatically: the Health and Safety Executive says that where a workstation assessment identifies a need for additional display-screen equipment, workers cannot be charged for it. Its guidance says the rules can apply to long-term home or routinely hybrid workers who use display-screen equipment daily for continuous periods of an hour or more; the assessment determines individual needs rather than creating a blanket requirement to provide a monitor.

What if an online monitor arrives faulty or does not fit my desk?

Faulty or misdescribed goods are different from changing your mind. GOV.UK says that for qualifying distance purchases, you can tell the seller within 14 days of receiving the item that you want to cancel, then have another 14 days to return it. Check the retailer’s return process and handling conditions, while retaining your statutory rights if the item is faulty.
