What to check before buying
For a first shop, start with the portion and preparation method, then compare recipe details that affect how often you are likely to use the pack.
| Priority |
What to check |
Your needs |
| Portion size and pack commitment |
Check the sachet count and grams per sachet. Compare dry portions, not only the number printed on the box. |
I want a known number of breakfasts without measuring oats or committing to a large open bag. |
| Preparation |
Check the stated cooking time, required liquid and whether you need a microwave, bowl or only hot water. |
I need a breakfast that fits a rushed morning with the kitchen equipment I have. |
| Plain, flavoured or protein recipe |
Compare ingredients, sugars on the stated basis and any added protein source. Plain and flavoured oats are different recipes. |
I may prefer an unsweetened base for my own toppings, or a ready-flavoured option that needs less preparation. |
| Allergens and gluten claims |
Read the current ingredients and precautionary allergen wording. Choose a specific gluten-free claim only where it is required for you. |
I need to know whether the exact recipe and its allergen warnings fit my dietary requirements. |

Frequently asked questions
Are single-serve oat sachets better than a bulk instant-oat bag for a first food shop?
Sachets are often the easier first purchase when you want fixed dry portions and do not yet know how often you will eat porridge. Bulk instant oats can suit regular use, but you need to measure each serving; Sainsbury's Ready Oats gives a 40g serving guide and approximately 18 servings per 750g pack.
Can I make oat sachets with water instead of milk?
Some sachets can be made with water. Flahavan's states that its sachets can be prepared with milk or water, while M&S says its sachets can be made with water, milk or a milk alternative; follow the liquid quantity and cooking instructions on your exact pack.
Are ordinary oat sachets automatically suitable for coeliac disease or a gluten-free diet?
No. Choose a product specifically labelled gluten-free when that claim is necessary for you. The Food Standards Agency states that food labelled gluten-free must contain no more than 20mg/kg gluten, and M&S lists its Traditional Porridge as unsuitable for coeliacs.
Do I still need to read the physical pack after checking ingredients online?
Yes. GOV.UK states that prepacked foods containing one of the 14 regulated allergens must identify it in the ingredients list. Use the current pack label as the final check, particularly for allergy, coeliac or vegan decisions.
