Who this setup suits

Bedroom-based product demonstrators

You need a light that can sit beside a small filming area, soften harsh shadows and be stored when the room is used for something else.

Sellers showing glossy or detailed products

You need to adjust the light and its reflections so labels, texture and surface details remain visible on camera.

Creators recording repeat demonstrations

You need adjustable brightness, colour temperature and a placement routine you can reproduce when room or window light changes.

What to check when choosing

Decide whether one light leaves a problem that a reflector cannot fix before finding room for a second stand.

One soft light

Choose it when: A small product remains readable with some shadow against a simple background.

Trade-off: One source cannot control the shadow side independently; a white reflector may provide enough fill without another powered light.

Two soft lights

Choose them when: A second source has a clear job, such as revealing detail lost in shadow or controlling the background separately.

Trade-off: Another fixture needs stand space, cable routing and time to position consistently in a shared room.

Concern What to check Who this matters to
Softness and shadows Check the diffusion surface and whether there is room to reposition the light. For glossy items, assess where reflections appear. I want labels and texture to stay readable without harsh shadows, while the product still has shape. Around 42% of consumers would put soft light and shadow control first.
Space and storage Check the assembled stand footprint, packed softbox size and whether the modifier folds or releases quickly. If I have to clear the bedroom after filming, I need equipment I can set up and store without blocking normal access. Space and storage would come first for around 33% of consumers.
Colour and repeatability Look for suitable dimming and colour-temperature controls; compare quoted brightness only at matching distances and with matching modifiers. When daylight changes between recordings, I need to recreate a similar exposure and colour setting. Around 25% of consumers would prioritise that consistency.

Buying pitfalls

  • Buying a softbox without checking what it attaches to

A softbox modifier is not necessarily a complete light. Godox specifies a Bowens mount for the SL60IIBi, while its ML60II Bi requires an adapter to use Bowens-mount modifiers.

Check the exact light-head mount and what the kit includes, then account for any required adapter, stand and power accessories.

A compatible light head, adapter or stand may need to be obtained separately.

  • Assuming two softboxes will improve every shot

A second source helps when it has a defined fill or background role. Without one, it adds equipment to position and can reduce the shadows that show a product’s shape.

Record a short test with one light, try a white reflector on the shadow side and add another powered light only if useful detail still disappears.

  • Comparing brightness figures taken under different conditions

A bare light, a supplied reflector and a softbox produce different illumination patterns. Aputure publishes separate bare-bulb and reflector measurements for the amaran 60x S; neither is automatically its output through a softbox.

Compare measurements for the exact models at the same distance and with equivalent modifier conditions, then consider how much dimming control your filming position needs.

  • Assuming an overseas mains listing is ready for a UK socket

A product photo does not establish which lead and plug come with a mains-powered light. The UK Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 include provisions for equipment intended to connect to UK BS 1363 socket outlets.

For a mains-powered setup, confirm the supplied plug-and-lead assembly and intended delivery market before use. This check does not apply to a passive softbox or reflector.

Brands to consider

Godox

Godox offers compact and Bowens-mount lighting routes that call for different modifier choices.

  • Godox specifies the compact ML60II Bi at approximately 526 g, with a 2800–6500 K colour-temperature range.
  • The ML60II Bi uses Godox-mount accessories unless a Bowens adapter is added; the SL60IIBi uses Bowens-mount modifiers directly. Check the exact mount and included power accessories.

amaran

The amaran 60x S is a compact bi-colour light head for a setup built around a compatible Bowens-mount softbox.

  • Aputure specifies the 60x S as a 65 W light with a 2700–6500 K range and AC or V-mount-battery power options.
  • Its published bare-bulb and reflector measurements should not be treated as illumination delivered through a softbox.

NEEWER

NEEWER lists 60 × 60 cm lighting kits, quick-release softboxes and separate COB light options.

  • NEEWER UK lists Bowens-mount softbox options and describes its FS150B bi-colour light as Bowens-mount compatible.
  • A softbox, kit and standalone light can contain different components. Confirm the exact contents and power connection of the option you choose.

Common questions

Is one softbox light enough for a product demonstration?

One controlled soft light can be enough when the product’s labels remain readable and the remaining shadow does not hide important detail. If only the shadow side needs brightening, try a white reflector before adding a second powered source.

Should I buy a two-softbox kit for a shared bedroom?

Choose two lights when the second one will solve a specific shadow or background problem that placement and a reflector cannot address. Allow for two stands, cable routes and storage space before committing to that setup.

Will any softbox fit any LED video light?

No; the mount on the modifier must match the light or a suitable adapter. Godox specifies Bowens-mount compatibility for the SL60IIBi, while the ML60II Bi needs an adapter for Bowens-mount modifiers.

What electrical checks matter for a mains-powered light?

Confirm that the supplied lead and plug suit the socket and that the product is intended for your delivery market. The UK Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 address equipment intended for UK BS 1363 socket outlets; Great Britain and Northern Ireland have different product-market processes, so check the requirements applicable to your location.

Can I compare quoted lux figures across softbox lights?

Only when the measurement distance and optical conditions are comparable. Aputure gives separate bare-bulb and reflector readings for the amaran 60x S, and adding a softbox changes the delivered light; check which configuration each quoted figure describes.
