Who is each format for?

Hosts with a larger, mixed-age guest list

A drinks station calls for enough plain sparkling water to serve guests without opening every bottle at once. Large bottles and multipacks offer different ways to organise shared drinks and self-service. Keep still water available for guests who do not want carbonation.

Hosts planning a seated birthday meal

A shareable bottle may be more practical at the table than a collection of individual bottles. S.Pellegrino describes its 75cl glass bottle as a table-sharing format; glass also needs careful handling where guests are moving around.

Hosts offering a choice beyond soft drinks

Plain and flavoured sparkling waters are different choices. Check the ingredients and nutrition label of each flavoured drink, particularly if guests want to avoid specific sweeteners or other ingredients. NHS guidance says children should avoid sugary fizzy drinks.

What should you check before buying?

Work out whether drinks will be poured at one station, shared at a table or picked up individually; then check the bottle count, total volume and labels for the formats that suit that plan.

Priority What to check Your needs
Serving format Check the volume per bottle, the number of bottles and the pack’s total volume. Allow space to chill the bottles you plan to serve first. I’m pouring drinks at one station, so shareable bottles make sense. If guests will take drinks to different areas, I’d rather set out individual bottles.
Plain or flavoured Read the product name, ingredients and nutrition information per 100ml. A no-added-sugar flavoured drink can still contain sweeteners and other ingredients: Sainsbury’s lists sucralose, citric acid, flavourings and potassium sorbate in its Mango & Passionfruit sparkling drink. I want guests to be able to choose plain sparkling water without mistaking a fruit-flavoured drink for it. Any flavoured bottles can sit alongside it as a separate option.
Table service Check bottle size and material, and whether glass can be kept in a suitable serving area. S.Pellegrino describes its 75cl glass bottle as suitable for sharing at the table. For a seated meal, I’d like a bottle guests can share at the table; for a busy activity area, avoiding breakable bottles matters more.
Opening and storage Follow the exact bottle’s instructions for opening, refrigeration and use after opening. M&S says its Collection sparkling mineral water is pressurised, should not be shaken and should be refrigerated after opening. I’d prefer to keep some bottles unopened until they are needed, rather than open the full party supply at the start.

Party-planning pitfalls

  • Treating flavoured water as plain water

A fruit-flavoured sparkling drink may contain sweeteners, acids, flavourings or preservatives. Sainsbury’s lists these types of ingredients in its Mango & Passionfruit product, so it will not meet every guest’s preference for plain water.

Put plain sparkling water out as a distinct choice, and check the ingredients and nutrition information per 100ml before adding a flavoured option.

  • Shaking or hurriedly opening a pressurised bottle

Sparkling-water bottles can spray when opened carelessly. M&S instructs customers not to shake its Collection sparkling mineral water and to open it with care; glass also presents a breakage risk in a busy party area.

Follow the bottle’s opening instructions and keep glass bottles in an area where they can be handled carefully.

  • Opening the entire supply at once

Opened bottles need to be managed according to their own storage instructions. M&S says to refrigerate its Collection sparkling mineral water after opening and consume it within three days.

Open bottles as they are needed and leave the rest unopened for later service.

Frequently asked questions

Can I serve plain sparkling water at a children’s birthday party?

Yes, it can be one of the water choices; provide still water too for guests who do not want carbonation. NHS guidance recommends water and milk as drinks for children and says children should avoid sugary fizzy drinks.

Is no-added-sugar flavoured sparkling water the same as plain sparkling water?

No. Sainsbury’s describes its Mango & Passionfruit sparkling drink as no added sugar, but lists sucralose, citric acid, flavourings and potassium sorbate among its ingredients. Read the label of the exact flavour you plan to serve.

What should I do with sparkling water left open after the party?

Follow the storage and use instructions on each bottle. M&S says to refrigerate its Collection sparkling mineral water after opening and consume it within three days; instructions can differ between products.

Will a refundable deposit apply to party drinks containers?

Not under the future England and Northern Ireland scheme until it begins. Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs guidance says that, from 1 October 2027, a refundable deposit will apply to certain single-use PET, aluminium and steel drinks containers from 150ml to 3L in England and Northern Ireland. Check the rules for the purchase location and date; this guidance does not establish the arrangements for Scotland or Wales.
