Who is each format for?

Campers sharing a meal near the car

A larger plain bottle or multipack gives several people water to serve with food. Check how far you must move it, where you will store it and whether you can use an opened bottle as directed on its label.

Walk-in campers and day-trip picnickers

Individual bottles or cans make it easier to give each person a sealed portion. Decide how many to take rather than carrying a whole multipack to a distant pitch.

Campers choosing between plain and flavoured fizz

If you want unflavoured sparkling water with food, check the ingredients. A flavoured sparkling drink may also contain acids, flavourings or sweeteners.

What should you check before buying?

Start with what the group wants to drink, then choose a pack you can transport, serve and store at the pitch.

Priority What to check Your needs
Plain or flavoured Read the full ingredients list, especially on flavoured or sugar-free drinks. Volvic’s strawberry sparkling drink, for example, lists citric acid, flavouring and sweeteners. I want an unflavoured drink with the meal, or I need to check that a flavoured option suits everyone’s preferences.
Serving size Compare individual 330ml to 500ml servings with larger bottles. Highland Spring lists 500ml and 1.5L bottles and a 6 x 1L pack; evian lists a 33cl can. Will everyone want their own sealed portion, or will we pour drinks for a shared meal?
Carrying and storage Consider the distance from transport to pitch, the total pack size and the label’s instructions after opening. The Camping and Caravanning Club notes that water is heavy to move. For a walk-in pitch, I may take only the portions we need. Near the car, I can consider a larger pack if there is somewhere suitable to keep it.
Frequent sipping Check whether plain sparkling or still water better suits how often you drink it. Buxton Water notes that some sparkling waters have a lower pH than still water and that lower-pH drinks can have greater erosive potential. If I expect to sip throughout the day rather than serve water with a meal, that difference matters to my choice.

What can catch you out?

  • Assuming every sparkling drink is plain water

Flavoured products can contain ingredients beyond water and carbonation. Volvic Touch of Strawberry Sparkling, for example, lists citric acid, flavouring and sweeteners.

Read the ingredients panel if you want plain sparkling water or need to avoid particular ingredients.

  • Taking a bulk pack without planning the carry

A multipack for a group meal also has to be moved from the car park or site entrance to the pitch.

Choose the number and size of containers around that journey: larger bottles for accessible shared meals, or smaller sealed portions when each person carries a drink.

  • Applying one bottle’s opening instructions to another

Instructions differ. The Joybuy listing for Highland Spring 6 x 1L says to refrigerate after opening and use within 7 days; its Buxton 1.5L listing says to consume within 3 days.

Check the instructions on the exact pack and choose a bottle size you can use accordingly.

  • Treating sparkling and still water as identical for frequent sipping

Buxton Water says some sparkling waters have a lower pH than still water, and that lower-pH drinks can have greater erosive potential than neutral or alkaline drinks.

If you regularly sip sparkling water throughout the day or have a dental concern, consider still water as another option and seek advice from a dental professional where appropriate.

Camping sparkling water FAQs

Should I take large bottles or individual portions for a campsite meal?

Take larger bottles for shared servings if you can carry and store them and follow their instructions after opening. For a walk-in pitch or packed picnic, individual 330ml to 500ml portions may be simpler to distribute. The Camping and Caravanning Club notes that water is heavy to move.

Is flavoured sparkling water the same as plain sparkling water?

No. Check the ingredients: Volvic Touch of Strawberry Sparkling lists citric acid, flavouring and sweeteners, while the plain Highland Spring and Buxton sparkling products are described as water with carbonation.

Does sparkling water count towards fluid intake while camping?

Yes. NHS guidance includes sparkling water as an option for people who do not like the taste of still water and notes that more fluid may be needed in hot conditions or after prolonged physical activity. Individual requirements can differ, including for people with medical fluid restrictions.
