What to check when choosing
For covering-letter work at a standing desk, establish how the screen will reach a comfortable height, then decide whether laptop docking or additional display detail matters most to you.
| Concern |
What to check |
Who this matters to |
| Screen position |
Compare the stand’s usable height range with your desk at standing height. If necessary, check VESA mounting and arm compatibility. |
If I alternate between sitting and standing, I need the top of the screen to reach eye level without stretching my neck; around 50% of consumers put screen positioning first. |
| Laptop docking |
Check USB-C video support on both devices and compare the monitor’s power-delivery rating with your laptop’s charging requirements. |
When I bring a laptop to the desk, I want to reconnect the display and charging cable with little fuss; roughly 30% of consumers prioritise straightforward laptop docking. |
| Document space and detail |
Compare native resolution at the screen size you want, and check how text looks at a comfortable viewing distance with your preferred display scaling. |
If I draft beside reference material or also work on detailed images, I want room to see what I am using; about 20% of consumers make display space and detail their main concern. |

Questions about standing-desk monitors
How should I position a monitor for writing at a standing desk?
Place the top of the screen at eye level and the display about an arm’s length away, in line with Health and Safety Executive guidance. Check that you can maintain that position when you change desk height, without twisting to view the screen or raising your shoulders to type.
Do I need a height-adjustable monitor stand?
You need a way to reach a suitable screen height, but it does not have to be the supplied stand. If its range is insufficient for your standing position, check whether a compatible, suitably rated VESA arm or another stable height solution will work.
Will any USB-C monitor display video and charge my laptop through one cable?
No: one-cable use requires compatible USB-C video output from the laptop and sufficient charging power from the monitor. BenQ UK specifies 65 W for the GW2790QT, while LG UK specifies charging up to 90 W for the 27UP850K-W; compare the relevant monitor with your own laptop’s requirements.
Do I still need screen breaks if I switch between sitting and standing?
Yes. The Health and Safety Executive advises breaks or changes of activity during display-screen work, with short, frequent breaks preferable to longer, less frequent ones. Changing desk height does not replace time away from screen tasks.
