Who each setup suits

Existing hi-fi owners adding streaming

If you already have an amplifier, receiver or powered speakers, look for a streamer with an output that connects to your system. You need playlist access, not necessarily another amplifier.

Listeners starting with passive speakers

If your speakers need an amplifier, consider a streaming amplifier or budget space for a separate amplifier. Match the amplifier to the speakers and your intended listening setup rather than choosing the player alone.

TV and multi-room users

If the living-room system will also handle television sound or play music in other rooms, check the TV connection, control app and compatibility with the other speakers you intend to use.

What to check before buying

Decide whether the new unit needs to power your speakers before comparing playlist controls and living-room connections.

Concern What to check Who this matters to
Keep an existing hi-fi Check for an output that matches an available input on your amplifier, receiver or powered speakers, and confirm how you will control playback. If my current system already powers the room, I want to add playlist streaming without replacing it. Around 36% of consumers put keeping their existing hi-fi first.
Power passive speakers Check the amplifier’s speaker-load guidance and the speakers’ recommended amplification; compare output ratings only under their stated conditions. Starting with passive speakers means I need amplification as well as a way to stream. For around 29% of consumers, powering those speakers is the primary concern.
Connect TV or other rooms Confirm the TV’s ARC or eARC port against the player’s stated HDMI connection, and check that other speakers work with its multi-room system. My music system may also need to handle TV sound or synchronise playback elsewhere at home. That shared-use need comes first for around 21% of consumers.
Manage room sound and bass Check the subwoofer connection and whether room correction needs a supported upgrade, microphone or particular software setup. If speaker placement is difficult or I plan to add a powered subwoofer, I want to understand the available setup controls. Around 14% of consumers prioritise room adjustment or bass integration.

Buying pitfalls

  • Buying a streamer when your speakers need an amplifier

WiiM Ultra and Cambridge Audio MXN10 are designed to connect to an existing audio system. A standalone streamer does not itself power passive speakers.

List the equipment you already own. If you have only passive speakers, compare streaming amplifiers with a streamer-and-amplifier setup.

A separate amplifier may also mean more cables and space for another component.

  • Assuming every playback method works with your playlist

Service and connection support differs between models: WiiM states that Ultra does not support AirPlay 2, while Cambridge Audio lists AirPlay 2 for MXN10. Playback-quality limits can also vary by service and connection method.

Check the exact model against your preferred service, account tier and way of controlling music before choosing it.

  • Treating room correction or wattage as a room-size guarantee

Room correction cannot replace suitable speaker placement and amplification. Bluesound specifies POWERNODE’s 100 W × 2 stereo output at 8 ohms, but that figure alone cannot establish how a particular speaker system will perform in your room.

Check the speaker load, recommended amplification and intended placement. For correction features, confirm what the exact model and setup require.

Some correction setups may require an upgrade or additional measurement equipment.

  • Overlooking the supplied power arrangement

A regional variant may have a plug or power arrangement that does not suit your electrical supply. The Health and Safety Executive advises checking that electrically powered equipment is suitable for the supply used.

Before ordering, check the exact unit’s voltage rating, supplied lead or power supply, and plug arrangement.

Relevant brands to consider

WiiM

The Ultra is a standalone streaming-hub option for an existing amplifier, receiver or powered speakers.

  • WiiM lists HDMI ARC, a subwoofer output and RoomFit room correction for the Ultra.
  • WiiM states that the Ultra does not support AirPlay 2.

Bluesound

The NODE connects to an existing stereo system; the POWERNODE combines streaming with amplification for compatible passive speakers.

  • Bluesound lists HDMI eARC and BluOS multi-room features for both models. It specifies 100 W × 2 stereo output at 8 ohms for POWERNODE.
  • Check passive-speaker compatibility for POWERNODE and the applicable upgrade requirements for room correction.

Cambridge Audio

The MXN10 is a compact standalone streamer intended to join an existing hi-fi system.

  • Cambridge Audio lists RCA, coaxial and optical outputs, alongside services and control methods including Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect and AirPlay 2.
  • Passive speakers still need amplification elsewhere in the system.

Naim

The Uniti Atom is an all-in-one streaming-amplifier option with TV connection and Naim multi-room capability.

  • Naim lists several streaming services, AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in and synchronisation with other Naim streaming products.
  • Check its suitability with the passive speakers and listening setup you plan to use.

Common questions

Do I need a streaming amplifier for a large living room?

You need a streaming amplifier if the new unit must power passive speakers; a standalone streamer can suit an existing amplifier, receiver or powered speakers with a compatible input. For either route, assess the amplifier and speakers together for your intended listening setup.

Will a network player work with my soul playlist service?

It will work through your intended method only if the exact model supports that service and control route. WiiM says Ultra does not support AirPlay 2, whereas Cambridge Audio lists AirPlay 2 for MXN10. Check current service availability, account requirements and playback limits for the model you choose.

Is HDMI ARC or eARC needed to play music?

No; HDMI ARC or eARC matters if you also want sound from a compatible TV. WiiM lists HDMI ARC for Ultra, while Bluesound lists HDMI eARC for NODE and POWERNODE. For music through an existing hi-fi, a compatible analogue or digital audio connection may be sufficient.

Can room correction fix sound throughout a large room?

No; room correction does not replace appropriate speakers, placement or amplification. WiiM lists RoomFit for Ultra, and Bluesound describes a Dirac Live-ready route for NODE. Check the feature’s setup and upgrade requirements alongside the rest of your speaker system.

What should I check before buying a regional electrical version?

Check that the exact unit’s voltage rating, supplied power arrangement and plug suit the electrical supply where you will use it. The Health and Safety Executive advises checking equipment suitability for its intended electrical supply; do not assume that versions sold for different regions come with the same arrangement.
