Who is each format for?

How often you visit, and whether you drink matcha plain or with milk, matter more to this choice than a grade name on its own.

Regular second-home latte drinkers

If matcha usually goes into milk, look for a powder whose maker describes it for mixed drinks. JING positions its Ceremonial Latte Matcha for milk; that describes its intended use, not a guarantee that everyone will find the finished drink strong.

Occasional weekend visitors

Individual sachets let you prepare a portion without measuring or leaving the rest of a loose pack open. Check the amount in each sachet and whether its preparation directions match the drink you want to make.

Households wanting unsweetened matcha

A powder listing matcha as its only ingredient lets you decide what else goes into a drink or recipe. Check each flavour in a variety pack separately: a plain stick and a flavoured stick need not have the same ingredients.

What should you check before buying?

Decide how you will serve the matcha, then choose a pack size and portion format that fit the gaps between visits.

Priority What to check Your needs
Flavour in milk Look for stated latte or mixed-drink use, flavour descriptions and a preparation dose. JING describes its latte matcha as working with milk and says culinary matcha holds its flavour against milk or sugar; neither statement is an independent taste comparison. I usually add milk and want the tea character to remain noticeable. A grade word alone will not tell me how the prepared drink will taste.
Time between visits Compare an opened loose pack with individually portioned sachets. JING advises drinking green tea within two to three months of opening and protecting it from heat, light, moisture and odours. Visits may be weeks apart, so I would rather open one serving at a time than leave a large pack open.
Ingredients Read the full ingredient list, including each flavour in a variety pack. Clearspring lists 100% matcha for its Matcha Shot; the PerfectTed variety sticks listed by Waitrose include flavoured versions with coconut sugar and flavourings. For an unsweetened drink or a powder I can use in recipes, I want to add any milk or sweetness myself.
Portion control Check the powder amount per serving and the suggested water volume before adding milk. Loose powder permits measuring a different portion; a stick supplies a set amount. I might prefer a quick, repeatable serving for guests, or the freedom to adjust a drink made from plain powder.

What can catch you out?

  • Assuming a higher grade means a stronger latte

Grade labels do not, by themselves, establish how noticeable matcha will be after milk is added. JING describes culinary matcha as holding its flavour against milk or sugar and separately positions its latte matcha for milk.

For a milk-first routine, compare the maker’s intended use and preparation guidance rather than choosing by grade name alone.

  • Leaving a large pack open between occasional stays

JING advises drinking green tea within two to three months of opening and keeping it away from heat, light, moisture and odours. A large pack may not fit a property used only now and then.

Consider individual sachets for infrequent visits. If you choose loose matcha, reseal it promptly and follow its storage directions.

  • Assuming every matcha stick is plain tea

In the PerfectTed variety pack listed by Waitrose, the Original stick is plain matcha, while the Vanilla, Strawberry and Blueberry versions contain coconut sugar and flavourings.

Check the ingredients of the specific stick you plan to serve, particularly if you want an unsweetened drink or plain matcha for cooking.

  • Increasing the portion without considering caffeine

Using more matcha changes the amount of caffeinated tea in a serving. The NHS advises that pregnant people should have no more than 200mg of caffeine a day from all sources.

Follow the product’s serving directions and take other caffeinated drinks and foods into account. Do not use a grade label to estimate caffeine content.

Brand and product-line references

These examples show how product lines differ in intended use and ingredients; a brand name alone does not establish how strong a prepared drink will taste.

JING

JING offers a Ceremonial Latte Matcha that it positions for milk-based drinks.

  • JING describes vegetal tea notes that work with milk and gives a 2g preparation measure for its latte matcha.
  • Its flavour description is the brand’s own; a 100g pack calls for a realistic plan to use and store it after opening.

Clearspring

Clearspring offers plain matcha as loose Premium Grade powder and as Matcha Shot sachets.

  • The Matcha Shot pack contains 8 × 1g sachets, with 100% organic matcha listed as the ingredient.
  • Clearspring describes its loose powder for drinks and culinary use, but that does not establish a stronger taste in milk than a latte-oriented powder.

PerfectTed

PerfectTed’s variety-stick format combines a plain Original serving with flavoured options in the Waitrose listing.

  • The portioned format avoids measuring powder; Waitrose lists a 1.5g Original stick and 5g flavoured sticks.
  • The Vanilla, Strawberry and Blueberry sticks contain coconut sugar and flavourings, so the whole pack is not plain, unsweetened matcha.

Common questions

What does “strong matcha” mean when I make a latte?

For a latte, look for a matcha intended to retain a noticeable tea flavour alongside milk, rather than relying on a ceremonial or premium label. JING describes its culinary matcha as holding its flavour against milk or sugar and positions its latte matcha for milk; those are the brand’s descriptions, not an independent comparison of finished drinks.

Should I keep a large pack or sachets at a second home?

Choose a larger loose pack if you expect to use it regularly after opening; sachets are more practical when visits are occasional and you want the remaining portions unopened. JING advises drinking green tea within two to three months of opening and storing it away from heat, light, moisture and odours.

Can opened matcha go in the fridge?

JING says green tea can be refrigerated, but advises letting the pack reach room temperature before opening it. Opening a cold pack can cause condensation inside, so keep moisture in mind when deciding where to store matcha between visits.

Are single-serve matcha sticks always unsweetened?

No. In the PerfectTed variety pack listed by Waitrose, the Original stick is plain matcha, while the Vanilla, Strawberry and Blueberry sticks contain coconut sugar and flavourings. Read each flavour’s ingredients if you need plain matcha.

What caffeine guidance matters during pregnancy?

The NHS advises pregnant people to have no more than 200mg of caffeine a day from all sources. Count matcha alongside other caffeinated drinks and foods, and do not assume its caffeine content from the grade name or the strength of its flavour.
