Who is each setup for?

Compact-desk spreadsheet student

If you mainly use an external screen for cash-flow spreadsheets, coursework and online banking, a 23.8–24-inch Full HD IPS model is a useful starting point. Check its stand and connections alongside the space needed for your keyboard, laptop and notes.

Laptop-first planner

If you connect a laptop for forecasting each week and want fewer cables, check USB-C video support, the monitor’s charging capability and stand adjustment. A USB-C socket alone does not establish that the screen can display video or charge your laptop.

Multi-window student-room user

If you routinely keep a forecast, banking window and course material open together, compare a 27-inch QHD screen with compact Full HD models. Make sure your desk accommodates the larger display at a comfortable viewing distance; refresh rate is a separate consideration if you also use the screen for entertainment.

What matters when choosing?

Decide how much spreadsheet workspace you need, then check that the screen fits your desk and connects to your laptop. Treat gaming features as a separate priority if the monitor will also serve that purpose.

Concern What to check Who this matters to
Spreadsheet workspace Compare 23.8–24-inch Full HD with 27-inch QHD if you need several columns or windows visible together. Check that your desk allows a comfortable viewing distance. If I compare bills, balances and due dates side by side, I want enough room to read them without constantly switching windows. Around 36% of consumers put this workspace need first.
Desk fit Measure usable width and depth with the stand attached, leaving room for a keyboard and other study materials. Check whether the stand can position the screen at a suitable height. On a crowded desk, I need the monitor to fit without pushing my working materials out of reach. Desk fit is the main concern for around 29% of consumers.
Laptop connection and positioning Check your laptop’s video output; for a one-cable USB-C setup, confirm DisplayPort Alt Mode and suitable power delivery. Compare stand adjustments if screen height matters. When I reconnect my laptop for each forecasting session, I want the display and charging arrangement to work reliably. Around 21% of consumers prioritise this setup need.
Study and entertainment After checking study needs, compare refresh rate, Adaptive Sync support and the connections used by your other devices. If the same screen also handles games or video, I want to assess those features without compromising my spreadsheet setup. That balance comes first for around 14% of consumers.

Buying mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing by screen size without measuring the desk

A larger display still needs a workable position. The Health and Safety Executive advises placing the top of a display at about eye level and the screen roughly an arm’s length away.

Measure the desk with space reserved for the stand, keyboard, laptop and books. Check the monitor’s dimensions with its stand attached and whether a compatible mount is possible.

If the supplied stand cannot reach a suitable height, a riser or compatible monitor arm may be needed.

  • Assuming every USB-C port handles video and charging

USB-C functions depend on both the monitor and the laptop. AOC describes video and power delivery on the 24B3CF2, but that does not establish compatibility with every laptop.

Check your laptop’s USB-C video specification and charging requirements against the exact monitor model. Check for an HDMI connection if you need another way to connect.

An adapter or separate laptop charger may still be needed for your setup.

  • Treating eye-comfort features as the whole setup

Low-blue-light and flicker-free features are model specifications, not substitutes for screen placement, posture and breaks. The Health and Safety Executive addresses those workstation factors separately.

Check viewing distance, screen height and the position of your keyboard and mouse before treating display modes as a deciding feature.

  • Looking only at the manufacturer warranty

For a UK purchase, a warranty is separate from rights against the seller when goods are faulty or misdescribed. Change-of-mind cancellation for an applicable online order is a different matter from a remedy for a fault.

Before ordering, check the seller’s cancellation and return information and keep the confirmation and exact model details. Inspect and test the monitor after delivery.

Check how the seller handles return shipping or collection for a monitor.

AOC

The 24B31H and 24B3CF2 illustrate different compact-screen priorities.

  • AOC lists the 24B31H as a 23.8-inch Full HD IPS model with 120Hz and Adaptive Sync. Its 24B3CF2 is a separate USB-C model with power delivery and a height-adjustable stand.

Common questions

Is a 24-inch Full HD monitor enough for cash-flow forecasting?

It can be enough if you mainly want an external screen for one spreadsheet and related study tasks on a compact desk. If you repeatedly need several forecast columns and other windows visible together, compare a 27-inch QHD model and check that you can position it at a comfortable distance.

How should I position a monitor for longer spreadsheet sessions?

Place it directly in front of you, with the top of the screen about level with your eyes and the display roughly an arm’s length away, following Health and Safety Executive guidance. Check that the keyboard and mouse can sit comfortably in front of you too.

Will a USB-C monitor give me a one-cable laptop setup?

Only if the laptop supports the required USB-C video mode and the monitor’s power delivery suits its charging needs. Check the specifications of both exact models; a USB-C-shaped connector does not by itself confirm either function.

What if a monitor bought online is faulty or simply unsuitable?

A fault and a change of mind have different routes. Coventry City Council Trading Standards explains that goods should be as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality, with a refund available in most cases for a fault within 30 days. For applicable distance sales, GOV.UK says customers can cancel up to 14 days after delivery; check the seller’s cancellation instructions and keep your order details.

What electrical marking should I check when buying a monitor?

Check the marking and product documentation for the destination where the monitor will be supplied. Department for Business and Trade guidance dated 31 March 2026 lists UKCA or CE marking for electrical equipment placed on the Great Britain market; for Northern Ireland, it lists CE, or UKNI together with CE where applicable. A marking shown in a listing does not by itself establish what is marked on the supplied product.
