Who needs which setup?

Occasional one-laptop visitor

If you work from a relative’s home for short or irregular stays, phone tethering may be enough for one laptop. Check the signal in the work room, your plan’s tethering terms and the data you expect to use.

Frequent remote-work visitor

For recurring visits, a dedicated hotspot or data device can give you a repeatable setup without relying on your phone for every work session. Screen coverage at the address before choosing one.

Video-call and cloud-work heavy user

Regular meetings, screen sharing, cloud synchronisation or large uploads make it especially important to test the usable connection and measure data use on a representative workday.

What should you check before buying?

Start with indoor coverage at the work address, then measure your data use. Once those are clear, choose between tethering and a separate device and check the exact plan terms. If the stay becomes long-term, fixed broadband is worth considering where installation is feasible.

Concern What to check Who this matters to
Indoor coverage Use Ofcom’s Map Your Mobile checker to compare predicted indoor coverage by network. Test a shortlisted SIM or phone in the intended work room where practical. If the signal at my desk is unreliable, neither a larger allowance nor a new hotspot solves the immediate problem. Around 33% of consumers would put usable indoor coverage first.
Data allowance Measure data use during a representative workday, including meetings, cloud synchronisation and large transfers; check the allowance against the number of days you expect to work there. When video calls and transfers are a regular part of my day, I need enough data for that workload. Roughly 27% of consumers would make the data allowance their primary concern.
Device setup Decide whether your phone can serve the required devices throughout a work session. For a separate device, check SIM compatibility, connections and charging. If I visit often, I may want a connection that does not tie up my phone and can serve my work devices. Around 20% of consumers would prioritise that setup.
Plan flexibility Check the exact tariff’s duration, tethering or data-device permissions, traffic-management conditions and cancellation terms. When I cannot predict how long the visits will continue, I need terms that fit a changing schedule. About 20% of consumers would put plan flexibility first.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Treating a coverage map as a guarantee at the desk

Ofcom’s coverage information is based on network predictions. Walls, window frames and the room’s position can affect the indoor signal you actually receive.

Compare predicted indoor coverage, then test the shortlisted network in the work room at the times you expect to use it.

  • Assuming every unlimited plan has the same rules

Provider terms and eligible plan cohorts differ, including conditions concerning high usage and tethering. One provider’s wording does not establish the terms of another tariff.

Read the current terms and contract summary for the exact plan and confirm that they permit your intended device use.

  • Choosing a 5G hotspot from its headline speed

A device’s advertised maximum is not the speed it will deliver inside a particular property. A hotspot still depends on usable service from a compatible network.

Screen and, where practical, test the network first. Then compare the exact device’s SIM support, connections and battery specification with your work pattern.

  • Taking on a plan that outlasts the visits

A recurring plan may remain in force after a temporary working arrangement changes.

Check the commitment and cancellation terms against the likely duration of your visits before ordering.

TP-Link

TP-Link’s M7010 is a separate 4G mobile Wi-Fi option for sharing a SIM connection across devices.

  • TP-Link specifies support for up to 10 connected devices and a battery rated for up to eight hours of use on the M7010.
  • Those figures are specifications, not a promise of runtime or mobile performance at your work address.

NETGEAR

NETGEAR’s Nighthawk range includes 5G mobile hotspots for consumers considering a separate connection with additional device features.

  • NETGEAR describes Ethernet or USB-C connectivity and battery life of up to 13 hours for selected Nighthawk models.
  • Check the exact model, SIM compatibility and local coverage; range-level claims do not apply to every device or location.

GL.iNet

GL.iNet’s Spitz AX GL-X3000 is a cellular-router option for consumers who specifically need configurable connection features.

  • GL.iNet describes the GL-X3000 as a dual-SIM 4G/5G gateway with external antennas and Multi-WAN features.
  • Its configuration is more involved than basic phone tethering; confirm that its features and the intended SIM suit your setup.

Common questions

How can I check mobile coverage at the temporary work address?

Use Ofcom’s Map Your Mobile checker to compare predicted indoor and outdoor coverage by network at the address or postcode. Its predictions can help you shortlist a network, but test service in the room where you will work if possible.

Should I buy a hotspot before checking the network?

Check the network first. A hotspot shares a mobile connection with your devices, but it cannot by itself ensure usable indoor signal; choose a compatible SIM and device after screening the work location.

How do I work out how much data I need?

Measure data use on a representative workday using your usual meetings, cloud work and transfers, then allow for the number of days you expect to work away. Usage varies with the activity and app settings: Zoom publishes different bandwidth requirements by call type, while Microsoft Teams offers a cellular-data reduction setting.

Does tethering use a separate data allowance?

That depends on the exact tariff. EE says tethering uses the plan’s data allowance for the plans it describes; check your own provider’s current terms for tethering permission and any applicable usage conditions.
