Who is choosing the wraps?

Hosts serving a shared brunch

Check the number and size of wraps against your guest count and the fillings you plan to serve. The reviewed eight-wrap packs from Old El Paso, Sainsbury’s and M&S offer starting points, but pack weights differ.

Hosts comparing fibre content

Compare the stated fibre amount per wrap or serving, as well as the pack count. Wholemeal and high-fibre products do not all have the same serving size or fibre value.

Hosts accommodating dietary restrictions

Choose a product with the specific labelling a guest requires, then check the current packet, fillings and preparation surfaces. Standard flour wraps contain wheat, and Old El Paso says its reviewed corn tortillas contain wheat too.

What should you check?

Count the wraps first, then compare the exact products against your guests’ dietary needs and how you intend to serve them. “Medium sliced” is not a useful tortilla-wrap size specification; use the stated wrap count, weight and any diameter instead.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Quantity and size Check wraps per pack, pack weight and any stated weight or diameter per wrap. Reviewed packs contain four or eight wraps, while the Joybuy gluten-free option contains six. I want enough wraps for the people eating them, without assuming that every pack contains the same number or size.
Fibre and carbohydrate Compare figures on the same per-wrap or per-serving basis. Tesco’s listings state 10 g fibre per Mission High Fibre wrap and 9 g carbohydrate per Mission Carb Balance wrap; both packs contain four wheat wraps. If fibre or carbohydrate is a deciding factor for my menu, I want the figure for the portion I will actually serve.
Allergens Read the current pack’s ingredients, allergen statement and relevant free-from claims. Old El Paso says its reviewed corn tortillas contain wheat; Tesco labels its Free From White wraps gluten free, wheat free and milk free. Someone at the table may need a specifically labelled alternative, with their fillings and shared preparation equipment checked too.
Serving and storage Follow the exact pack’s warming, opened-pack and freezing directions. Old El Paso gives three days after opening for its reviewed regular flour wraps; M&S gives two days for its reviewed plain wraps. I may serve some wraps cold, warm others and keep leftovers, so I need instructions for the product I buy.

Common buying mistakes

  • Assuming “corn” means gluten-free

Old El Paso states that its reviewed corn tortillas also contain wheat. The word “corn” alone cannot establish whether a wrap meets a guest’s requirements.

Choose a specifically labelled product when gluten-free wraps are needed, and check its current packet alongside sauces, fillings and seasonings.

  • Choosing a specialist pack without counting the wraps

The reviewed Mission Carb Balance, Mission High Fibre and Tesco Free From packs each contain four wraps, compared with eight in several standard and wholemeal examples.

Work out how many wraps each guest might want before buying; a separate specialist pack may make sense when only some guests need it.

A smaller pack may mean opening another pack to serve everyone.

  • Relying on an older online ingredient list

Ingredients and allergen information can change, which matters particularly when a guest must avoid a specific ingredient.

Read the physical packet before preparing the meal and keep it available while serving.

  • Using one storage rule for every wrap

Opened-pack and freezing instructions differ between the reviewed Old El Paso and M&S products.

Reseal and store the exact product as its packet directs, and check its freezing instructions before putting leftovers away.

Brand and range references

These examples describe particular UK product listings, not every wrap made by each brand.

Old El Paso

Its UK range includes regular flour tortillas and corn tortillas; the reviewed regular flour product contains eight 41 g wraps.

  • Old El Paso says its regular flour tortillas can be eaten cold or heated.
  • The reviewed flour and corn products both contain wheat; check the current packet for dietary needs.

Mission

The reviewed Carb Balance and High Fibre wheat tortillas are sold in four-wrap packs.

  • Tesco’s listings give 9 g carbohydrate and 14 g fibre per Carb Balance wrap, and 10 g fibre per High Fibre wrap.
  • Both reviewed products contain wheat, and a four-wrap pack may not cover a larger group.

Tesco

The reviewed own-label options include an eight-wrap wholemeal pack and a four-wrap Free From White pack.

  • Tesco labels its Free From White wraps gluten free, wheat free and milk free.
  • Check the count and current label of the particular pack rather than treating the two options as interchangeable.

Sainsbury’s

The reviewed plain and wholemeal wheat tortilla packs each contain eight wraps.

  • Sainsbury’s lists 6.1 g fibre per tortilla for its reviewed wholemeal wraps.
  • Its wholemeal listing includes a manufacturing-method warning for customers allergic to soya, rye, barley, oats or spelt.

  • M&S describes its reviewed plain wraps as soft 10-inch wheat wraps.

Questions about serving wraps

How many tortilla wraps should I buy for a brunch?

Count your guests and decide whether wraps are the main part of the meal or one of several dishes. Reviewed standard packs include eight-wrap options, while some specialist packs contain four and the Joybuy gluten-free option contains six; check the size and count on the pack you choose.

Are corn tortillas gluten-free?

Not necessarily: Old El Paso says its reviewed regular corn tortillas contain wheat. When gluten-free wraps are required, choose a product explicitly labelled gluten-free and check its current packet before serving.

Do tortilla wraps need heating?

Old El Paso says its reviewed regular flour tortillas can be eaten cold or heated. If you want to warm a different product, follow its own microwave, pan or oven directions rather than borrowing timings from another pack.

What should I check when serving someone with a food allergy?

Read the current ingredient and allergen information for the wraps and every filling, and take care with shared utensils and preparation surfaces. UK government allergen guidance identifies cereals containing gluten, including wheat, among the 14 allergens covered by food allergen rules; a product name alone is not an adequate check.

Can I freeze leftover tortilla wraps?

Check the instructions for the exact pack before freezing it. Old El Paso says its reviewed regular flour tortillas can be frozen, while M&S gives freezing and thawing directions for its reviewed wholemeal wraps; follow the product’s own directions for opened packs too.
