Who each approach suits

Offline library keepers

If you want to open your existing folders on the iPad without uploading the archive first, a connected drive is worth considering. Apple Support says the drive needs a supported format and a single data partition; check the connector and power requirements for your iPad and drive.

Apple Photos continuity seekers

If you want the collection in Photos on your iPad, Apple Support documents uploading it from the Windows computer through iCloud for Windows. Changes sync across devices, so retain a separate backup of the archive.

Home-library organisers

If you plan to keep updating a large collection from Windows, a NAS can provide a central home location. Synology Knowledge Center documents computer synchronisation and iPad viewing through Synology Photos; this route also calls for hardware setup and backup planning.

What matters when choosing

Connected drive

Choose it when: You want to open the old folders locally without first uploading the collection.

Trade-off: The drive must be connected when you use it, and some hard drives need an additional power source.

iCloud Photos

Choose it when: You want the Windows-held collection to become an iPad Photos library while the computer is still available for upload.

Trade-off: Changes and deletions sync across devices, so the library still needs a separate backup.

Google Photos

Choose it when: You want uploaded photos available on devices signed in to the same Google Account, including non-Apple devices.

Trade-off: Uploading depends on internet access, and the storage-quality setting affects the copies you retain.

NAS photo library

Choose it when: You want central home storage with ongoing Windows synchronisation and iPad access through a photo app.

Trade-off: You take responsibility for the hardware, network setup, maintenance and backups.

Concern What to check Who this matters to
Offline folder access For a connected drive, check the exact iPad connector and drive power needs. Apple Support requires one data partition and a supported file system. If I need my existing folders when I cannot rely on internet access, I would rather connect a drive than upload everything first. Around 29% of consumers put offline folder access first.
An iPad Photos library Check that iCloud Photos uses the same Apple Account, that there is room for the collection and that you retain a separate backup. If I want to browse the collection in Photos, I need the Windows archive uploaded before I retire the laptop. For around 36% of consumers, that continuity is the primary concern.
Access beyond Apple devices For Google Photos, check account storage and choose the upload-quality setting before transferring the archive. If I will still use Windows or other devices, I want my uploaded photos available wherever I sign in. That wider access comes first for around 21% of consumers.
Central home storage Check the NAS photo app, Windows synchronisation plan, network access and how the NAS will be backed up. If my collection will keep growing on Windows, I would prefer one home-held library that I can also browse on the iPad. Around 14% of consumers prioritise that arrangement.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a drive by connector or capacity alone

A plug that fits does not establish whether the iPad can use the drive. Apple Support specifies a single data partition and supported file system, and notes that external hard drives often need their own power source.

Identify your iPad model, then check the drive’s partition, format, connection and power requirements before purchasing.

You may also need a compatible adapter, powered hub or separate drive power supply.

  • Using iCloud Photos as the only retained copy

Apple Support says changes and deletions sync between devices using iCloud Photos. The photos are not duplicated in iCloud Backup.

Keep the original archive or another independent backup while you check the move, and maintain a separate copy afterwards.

  • Selecting a storage-saving setting without checking quality

Google Photos Help says Storage saver can resize photos above 16 MP, while Original quality retains their captured resolution.

If keeping original-resolution files matters, check the collection size and available Google Account storage before uploading with Original quality.

Relevant brands for reference

Apple

Apple’s documentation covers connected iPad storage, importing photos, iCloud Photos and uploads from iCloud for Windows.

  • Apple Support documents browsing supported external storage in Files and importing photos into Photos.
  • iCloud Photos syncs edits and deletions; Apple says to keep backup copies of the library.

Google

Google Photos is relevant if you want uploaded photos accessible from devices signed in to your Google Account.

  • Google Photos Help describes access to backed-up photos from signed-in devices.
  • Its Storage saver setting can resize photos above 16 MP; check the quality setting if captured resolution matters.

Synology

Synology’s NAS software is relevant to a centrally stored collection that continues to be updated from Windows.

  • Synology Knowledge Center documents computer synchronisation and viewing NAS-stored photos in its iOS app.
  • A NAS still requires hardware selection, setup, network configuration and a backup plan.

Common questions

Can I connect my existing Windows external drive to an iPad?

You may be able to, but the connector alone is not enough to establish compatibility. Apple Support requires a single data partition and lists APFS, APFS (encrypted), macOS Extended (HFS+), exFAT (FAT64), FAT32 and FAT as supported formats. Check the adapter for your particular iPad and whether the drive needs external power.

Will photos on a connected drive appear in the iPad Photos app?

Connecting a drive lets you browse supported files in Files; adding them to Photos is a separate import step. Apple Support documents importing photos and videos from external storage, so decide whether you want to keep browsing folders or bring selected items into the Photos library.

Can I upload the Windows photo library to iCloud before retiring the laptop?

Yes. Apple Support documents adding photos and videos through iCloud for Windows for access on devices using iCloud Photos. Use the same Apple Account on the iPad and keep an independent backup because iCloud Photos is not a duplicate copy in iCloud Backup.

Can Google Photos retain the original resolution of my photos?

Yes, if you choose Original quality and have enough Google Account storage. Google Photos Help says this setting retains captured resolution, whereas Storage saver can resize photos above 16 MP.

Would a NAS suit a photo library I still update from Windows?

It can if you want central home storage and are willing to manage the NAS. Synology Knowledge Center documents synchronising large numbers of computer photos with Synology Drive Client and viewing NAS-stored photos through Synology Photos on iOS; plan the NAS backup separately.
