Who needs which approach?

Short-trip travellers keeping their UK number

If calls, texts or work contacts need to reach your usual number, check your provider’s roaming terms for the destination first. On a compatible, unlocked dual-SIM phone, a separate travel-data plan may let you keep the UK line active without using it for mobile data.

Travellers relying on maps and work apps

Compare the destination’s data allowance and fair-use conditions with the navigation, messaging and work access you expect to need. Downloaded Google Maps areas can help when a connection is unavailable, but offline mode lacks walking and public-transport directions, live traffic and alternative routes.

Long-stay travellers who need a local number

A local plan may fit if you need a local number and your phone accepts the intended SIM and is unlocked for another provider. If you remove your UK SIM, store it securely and plan how you will receive calls and messages on that line.

What should you check before choosing?

Compare the three ways to obtain service, then check your exact destination, phone and need for the UK number. Downloaded maps can reduce dependence on data whichever route you choose.

Your existing provider

Consider it when: Your tariff or available pass covers the destination and your expected calls, texts, data use and trip length.

Trade-off: Destination inclusion, allowances and pass conditions vary by provider and tariff; check them before relying on your UK plan abroad.

Local physical SIM

Consider it when: You need a local plan or number and have an unlocked phone that accepts the physical SIM.

Trade-off: Replacing your UK SIM can interrupt access to that line from its SIM slot, so you will need to store the original safely.

Travel eSIM

Consider it when: Your unlocked phone supports the intended eSIM setup and you want to add travel data without removing your physical UK SIM.

Trade-off: Active-line combinations depend on the handset and carrier; check setup requirements before you lose access to Wi-Fi or a hotspot.

Priority What to check Your needs
Destination terms Check your exact destination and tariff against the provider’s roaming information. Compare included service, pass eligibility, data allowance and applicable fair-use or time limits. I want to know what my usual plan will cover before I use calls, texts or data abroad.
Phone compatibility Check network-lock status, physical-SIM and eSIM support, and whether the intended carrier supports your exact handset and active-line setup. A separate travel plan appeals to me, but it needs to work on the phone I will actually take.
UK number access Check whether both lines can remain active and which line will handle calls, texts and mobile data. If swapping a physical SIM, plan where to keep the UK SIM. I need messages or calls on my UK number while using a different plan for travel data.
Navigation backup Download the relevant Google Maps area before travel. Check that your route falls within it; offline mode lacks walking, cycling and public-transport directions, live traffic and alternative routes. When data is weak or switched off, I still want guidance for a planned driving route.

What can catch travellers out?

  • Assuming your UK allowance works at every destination

Ofcom warns that roaming can bring additional charges. Provider inclusions and fair-use conditions can differ by destination and tariff, even when a plan includes some travel use.

Before leaving, check the destination against your provider’s terms and compare the applicable allowance with your expected calls, texts and data use.

  • Buying another provider’s SIM before checking the phone

A network-locked phone may not work with another provider, while eSIM and dual-SIM configurations depend on the handset and carrier. Apple and Google both specify unlocking conditions for using other operators on their supported phones.

Check the exact model’s lock status and supported SIM arrangement before choosing a local SIM or travel eSIM.

  • Removing the UK SIM when you still need its number

Taking out the home SIM can affect access to that line during the trip.

If the UK number must remain active, check whether your phone supports the required dual-SIM arrangement. Otherwise, decide how you will handle calls and messages, and store the removed SIM securely.

  • Relying on offline maps for every journey

Google Maps offline guidance works within a downloaded area, but does not include walking, cycling or public-transport directions, live traffic or alternative routes.

Save the relevant area before departure and keep a suitable data option or another navigation backup if those functions matter to your trip.

Provider information to check

If you already use one of these providers, start with its information for your own tariff and destination before comparing a separate SIM or eSIM.

EE

EE describes roaming-pass options for its customers and says a welcome message on arrival links to available passes.

  • An option to examine if you would prefer to use your existing provider.
  • Check which pass applies to your tariff and destination, including its allowance and duration.

Vodafone UK

Vodafone directs customers to check roaming options using their mobile number and destination.

  • Its checker is designed to show options for the customer’s plan and destination.
  • Zones, charges and inclusive roaming vary by plan; one customer’s result may not apply to another.

O2

O2 describes roaming inclusions, travel zones and bolt-on options that depend on plan type and destination.

  • Existing customers can check whether their own plan includes the intended destination or offers a relevant add-on.
  • Do not assume an inclusion described for one O2 plan or zone applies to yours.

Joybuy options for travel connectivity

These options include UK SIM plans with stated roaming data and phones to consider if you want to arrange a separate travel-data line. For a SIM plan, confirm destination coverage and terms; for a phone, confirm its lock status and the SIM arrangement you intend to use.

Samsung Galaxy A17 5G A176 Dual SIM, 4GB 128GB, Grey

For a trip that calls for separate home and travel lines, check which SIM combinations this Dual SIM handset can keep active. Confirm that it is unlocked and works with the intended destination carrier before arranging another provider’s plan; the phone itself is not a travel-data plan.

Samsung Galaxy S26, Black, 12GB 256GB

Samsung Galaxy S26, Black, 12GB 256GB

If you are considering this phone for travel data, confirm that the exact handset is unlocked and supports your intended SIM and carrier arrangement. Its stated 12GB 256GB configuration does not establish destination network compatibility, and a travel plan must be chosen separately.

Frequently asked questions

Will my UK mobile allowance work abroad, including in Europe?

Do not assume it will. Ofcom warns that roaming can bring additional charges, and EE, Vodafone UK and O2 describe options that depend on the plan and destination. Check your exact tariff, destination, allowance and any fair-use conditions before travel.

Does my phone need to be unlocked for a local SIM or travel eSIM?

Check that it is unlocked before planning to use another provider. Apple says an iPhone must not be network-locked to use another provider while travelling, and Google says a Pixel must be SIM-unlocked to work with any mobile operator. Also check the intended SIM type and carrier compatibility for your exact phone.

Can I keep my UK number while using a travel eSIM for data?

Yes, if your unlocked phone and carriers support the required dual-SIM configuration. Apple describes using Dual SIM for two active numbers or plans; Google says simultaneous use of two eSIM profiles has Pixel model and carrier conditions. Check which line your phone will use for calls, texts and mobile data.

Should I wait until I land to set up a travel eSIM?

Follow the travel-eSIM provider’s activation instructions, but check the connection needed for setup before departure. Apple says setting up a new iPhone eSIM requires Wi-Fi or a hotspot in many circumstances, so waiting until arrival could be inconvenient if neither will be available.

Can downloaded maps replace mobile data for the whole trip?

Not if you need live or non-driving directions. Google Maps can guide a route within a downloaded area when the connection is slow or unavailable, but its offline mode lacks public-transport, cycling and walking directions, live traffic and alternative routes.
