What matters when choosing?
Decide how the computer will drive two independent displays before choosing screen size or mounting. Both connection routes still need a layout that fits the desk.
Two separate video connections
Choose when: A desktop PC or dock has two outputs that support the intended screens, particularly at a fixed desk.
Allow for: Each monitor needs its own supported video connection, with the corresponding cables and desk space.
USB-C and a display chain
Choose when: A compatible laptop is the main computer and reducing the cables connected to it matters.
Check first: USB-C video, any desired charging and the complete two-display chain must all work with that laptop or dock.

What to check |
Who this matters to |
| Two-display compatibility |
Confirm the computer or dock supports two independent external displays at the planned resolution and refresh rate. For a display chain, also check USB-C video support and DisplayPort MST requirements. |
If I work mainly from a laptop, I need to know that both screens will operate before choosing a neater connection method. Around 31% of consumers put connection compatibility first. |
| Readable workspace |
Compare native resolution and screen size, then check whether the intended pair fits the available desk width. The cited 27-inch QHD models have a resolution of 2560 × 1440 per screen. |
Keeping a member record open beside a spreadsheet or email makes usable space for text and columns my priority. Around 31% of consumers put readable workspace first. |
| Positioning and desk fit |
Measure desk width and depth; check stand adjustment or mounting requirements. The UK Health and Safety Executive advises placing the screen and keyboard centrally to avoid twisting your back. |
At a cramped desk or during regular screen work, I need room to position the main display and reach the keyboard comfortably. Around 23% of consumers put positioning and desk fit first. |
| Straightforward expansion |
Check for a suitable input on each monitor and a corresponding output on the computer or dock; establish which cables are needed. |
When I mainly want a second view for reference material, a direct connection matters more to me than laptop charging or daisy-chaining. Around 15% of consumers put straightforward expansion first. |

Common questions
Can one USB-C connection run two external monitors?
It can only do so when the laptop or dock and the proposed monitor connections support that display arrangement. BenQ lists USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode and DisplayPort MST output for the GW2790QT, but these monitor features do not establish the computer’s display limit. Check the exact computer model, video mode and required cables before buying.
Does every Mac support two external monitors?
No single two-monitor answer applies to every Mac model. Apple advises checking how many external displays the particular Mac supports, along with the ports, cables and adapters required, before choosing the screens or connection route.
How do I arrange two screens in Windows?
Arrange the displays in Windows Display settings to match their physical positions. Microsoft Support explains that you can select and drag the display positions; use an extended desktop when you want membership records and reference material on separate screens rather than showing the same content on both.
Where should the screens sit for regular records work?
Position the screen used most often centrally, then place the second to limit repeated turning. The UK Health and Safety Executive advises keeping the screen and keyboard in front of you without twisting your back, with the top of the screen around eye level and the screen about an arm’s length away.
Does a UK employer need to assess a regular two-screen workstation?
The UK Health and Safety Executive says employers must carry out a workstation assessment when workers use display screen equipment daily as part of their normal work, continuously for an hour or more. The assessment concerns the workstation and work being done; this employer duty is not a requirement for every individual buying monitors for home use.
