Who needs this setup?

OBS sports-recording operators

If you keep a programme feed, preview or replay on one screen and recording controls on the other, OBS Project documents projector outputs for sources, scenes, programme, preview and multiview. Your computer still needs to support the displays you connect.

Motion-conscious viewers and replay reviewers

A faster primary monitor may matter if you want to follow fast action while keeping controls elsewhere. Check the frame rate of the footage and the display connection before choosing on refresh rate alone; a faster panel cannot add frames to the source.

Laptop and dock users arranging a two-screen desk

Confirm that the laptop or dock supports the independent external displays you need before choosing their sizes or stands. Microsoft Support explains how to arrange connected displays in Windows so their on-screen positions match the desk.

What matters when choosing?

Check independent display output first. Then decide whether you need matching screens for a consistent layout, a more specialised main screen for footage, or simply one wide workspace.

ConcernWhat to checkWho this matters to
Independent displays Confirm how many extended displays your computer or dock can drive, and check the required ports and cables. I need the match view and recording controls on separate screens, so two monitors are useful only if both can be connected independently. Around 33% of consumers put display compatibility first.
Viewing and control space Decide whether the screens need matching sizes and resolutions, and where OBS programme, preview or multiview will sit. With controls open during a fixture, I want the footage to remain visible rather than sit behind other windows. For around 27% of consumers, that separation is the primary need.
Motion monitoring Check the footage frame rate and the resolution and refresh rate supported by the chosen output, cable and monitor input. When following fast action, I care most about how the main display presents the available footage, even if the control screen is simpler. Around 20% of consumers prioritise motion monitoring.
Desk layout Measure usable desk space and check stand adjustment or mounting support for the intended positions. I need to see the feed and reach the controls without an awkward screen arrangement during a long session. Physical positioning comes first for around 20% of consumers.

Buying pitfalls

  • Buying two monitors before checking the video outputs

A second panel cannot create another independent signal. Microsoft Support describes arranging displays once they are connected, while OBS Project's projector outputs require another connected display.

Check the exact computer, graphics card or dock for supported extended displays, then match its ports and cables to the monitors.

  • Assuming every port supports the headline refresh rate

Acer specifies the Nitro KG272U P at up to 170Hz through DisplayPort, but up to 144Hz through HDMI at 2560 × 1440.

Compare the intended resolution and refresh rate against the specification for the input you will actually use, as well as the computer output and cable.

  • Treating an ultrawide as two physical monitors

An ultrawide can hold windows side by side, but it remains one screen. It cannot place the programme view and controls at different physical positions.

Choose one wide workspace only if independent placement is unnecessary; keep two monitors in the plan if an operator or another viewer needs a separately positioned display.

  • Overlooking viewing and recording permissions

Using a computer monitor does not remove the conditions attached to live TV viewing or broadcast recording. TV Licensing says a licence is needed to stream a live TV programme; the UK's statutory time-shifting exception concerns recordings made in domestic premises for private and domestic use solely for later viewing.

Check that your live-TV viewing is covered and that your intended source and use permit the recording. Do not assume a private later-viewing exception covers public showing or redistribution.

Brands to consider

Dell

Dell's P2425D and P2425HE are examples to examine for a productivity-oriented pair; the S2725QC represents a higher-resolution main-screen route.

  • Dell UK specifies the P2425D at 2560 × 1440 and 100Hz, the P2425HE as an FHD USB-C hub monitor with up to 90W power delivery, and the 27-inch S2725QC at 4K and up to 120Hz.
  • These specifications belong to the named models. Check which connections and stand adjustments suit the pair you intend to build; a display does not record the feed.

Acer

The Nitro KG272U P is a 27-inch WQHD option to examine when one screen is primarily for fast-action viewing and the other is for controls.

  • Acer specifies up to 170Hz through DisplayPort and up to 144Hz through HDMI at 2560 × 1440.
  • The supplied stand is specified for tilt rather than pivot. Check the intended connection and physical arrangement before pairing it with a control screen.

LG

The LG UltraGear 39GX900A-B is an alternative to consider when the requirement is a wide, side-by-side workspace rather than separately placed screens.

  • LG UK specifies a 39-inch, 21:9 OLED display at 3440 × 1440 with a 240Hz refresh rate.
  • It remains one display. Its gaming specifications do not give it recording capability or make it a substitute for independent physical placement.

Joybuy products for these layouts

These individual monitors cover QHD viewing or control positions, higher-resolution main-screen positions and a single-ultrawide alternative. For a literal two-screen setup, plan for a separate second display and confirm that your computer can drive both.

ASUS ProArt PA278CV IPS WQHD monitor

ASUS ProArt PA278CV IPS WQHD monitor

Consider this WQHD screen for a viewing or control position where matching the resolution of another display matters. This is one monitor, not a two-screen bundle; check your computer's independent outputs and the connections needed for your layout.

LG UltraGear G8 27G850A 27-inch dual-mode monitor

LG UltraGear G8 27G850A 27-inch 4K dual-mode monitor

This is a candidate main screen when detailed footage viewing takes priority over matching both displays. Its named modes are 4K at 240Hz and 1080p at 480Hz; check which mode your computer, chosen input and cable can deliver. A separate control monitor is still needed for two physical screens.

MSI MAG 275UPD E14 27-inch dual-mode monitor

MSI MAG 275UPD E14 27-inch 4K dual-mode monitor

Consider this as the main viewing display if its UHD 144Hz or FHD 288Hz mode fits your source and connection. Confirm the intended mode for the input and cable you will use, and arrange a separate control screen if the workflow requires two monitors.

AOC Q32V4 31.5-inch IPS monitor

AOC Q32V4 31.5-inch 2K IPS monitor

This larger screen is a candidate for a viewing or control position if it fits your desk. Its name identifies a 31.5-inch 2K IPS variant; check the resolution you intend to match with another monitor and the positioning options you need. It is sold here as one display, not a pair.

Acer Predator X49X 49-inch curved ultrawide monitor

Acer Predator X49X 49-inch 32:9 QD-OLED ultrawide

Consider this single-screen alternative only if one continuous workspace can replace separately positioned displays. The named variant is a curved, Double Quad HD, 240Hz ultrawide; check desk fit and whether your computer and cable support the mode you intend to use. It cannot provide a second physical screen.

Questions about recording sport

Can a monitor record a sports fixture on its own?

No. A monitor displays a signal; recording needs a suitable source and recording-capable equipment or software. OBS Project describes OBS as software for video recording and live streaming, but the monitor itself does not capture footage.

How do I arrange two screens for recording in Windows?

Connect both screens and use Windows display settings to identify and arrange them to match their positions on your desk. Microsoft Support covers that arrangement, while OBS Project documents sending a source, scene, programme, preview or multiview to another connected display through a projector output.

Do I need a TV Licence to watch live sport on a computer monitor?

If you are streaming a live TV programme in the UK, TV Licensing says you need to be covered by a TV Licence; watching on a computer monitor does not change that requirement. Check the service and your intended viewing or recording arrangement before the fixture.

Can I record a broadcast fixture to watch later?

The UK time-shifting exception in section 70 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 covers a broadcast recording made in domestic premises for private and domestic use solely to view or listen at a more convenient time. It is not a general permission for public showing, commercial use or redistribution; check the terms governing your source and intended use.
