Who needs which checks?

The applications and assessments on your course matter more than a general student-laptop label.

Essay, research and online-learning students

For documents, presentations, spreadsheets and web-based learning, check departmental software requirements before choosing a portable Windows or Mac laptop. Which? distinguishes these everyday tasks from more demanding course workloads.

Creative, design, engineering and advanced-computing students

Check the department’s required operating system and application specifications before choosing memory, storage or graphics. The University of Bath’s Mechanical Engineering department, for example, recommends Windows because several key applications are Windows-only.

Students considering ChromeOS or refurbished laptops

For a Chromebook, confirm that teaching tools and assessments work on ChromeOS. For a refurbished laptop, check its exact configuration, condition, warranty and security-update support as well as course compatibility.

What should you check before buying?

Start with the course’s device guidance, then match the laptop’s configuration and everyday practicality to the work you will actually do.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Software compatibility List required applications, assessment systems and peripherals. Check their operating-system and processor requirements, and whether any university remote access meets the course’s needs. I need my course tools to run on the laptop I choose. UWE Bristol says course software determines the device type; its guidance describes Windows as the most compatible route and cautions against Chromebooks as a primary device where specialist applications are needed.
Course workload Compare the course’s memory, storage and graphics requirements with the exact configuration. Check specialist applications separately rather than assuming one specification suits every subject. For essays and research, I do not want to select hardware around a workload I will not have. If my course uses CAD or other specialist software, I need to follow its stated requirements; the University of Bath gives separate device advice for Mechanical Engineering.
Study routine Check weight and expected battery use for days away from a charger. Confirm a webcam and microphone if the course includes live online teaching. I will carry the laptop between study locations and need it ready for classes. The University of Warwick recommends a laptop for portability across campus, accommodation and home, while giving priority to any different departmental guidance.
Refurbished condition Confirm the model, configuration, battery information and condition description. Check warranty terms and whether the device can still receive security updates. If I choose refurbished, I need a device that remains usable with university systems. Cardiff University warns that devices without current security-update support may be incompatible with its systems or secure wireless network.

Common buying mistakes

  • Choosing an operating system before checking course software

General device advice may not cover your department’s applications. The University of Bath identifies Windows-only software in its Mechanical Engineering guidance, so a laptop suitable for ordinary coursework may not run that course’s required tools.

Find your programme’s device guidance and check each required application and assessment tool against the exact laptop configuration before ordering.

  • Assuming web browsing makes a Chromebook suitable for every course

UWE Bristol cautions that many specialist applications cannot be installed on Chromebooks. University of Bristol Health Sciences guidance also says its secure online-proctoring browser is incompatible with ChromeOS.

Ask your department to confirm ChromeOS support for teaching software, coursework and your assessments, rather than relying on document-editing capability alone.

An incompatible assessment or application may mean arranging access to another suitable device.

  • Using one generic specification for intensive coursework

Requirements change with the application: the University of Bath recommends a Windows laptop meeting Autodesk Inventor requirements for its Mechanical Engineering students. That departmental recommendation does not make the same configuration necessary for essay-based courses.

Check the named applications’ memory, storage and graphics requirements, including any departmental guidance, before choosing a configuration.

  • Assuming refurbished laptops have identical support

Apple’s stated functional testing and one-year warranty apply to its own UK Certified Refurbished programme, not every refurbished laptop. Cardiff University also warns that devices unable to receive current security updates may have trouble using university systems.

Check the exact model, condition, battery information, warranty process and operating-system support, and keep the seller’s description.

Brand routes to consider

These brand programmes and product lines are reference points, not a substitute for checking your course’s requirements or an indication that every model is listed below.

Apple

A Mac route when the course confirms that its required applications and assessments work on macOS.

  • Apple UK describes full functional testing and a one-year warranty for its Certified Refurbished products.
  • Check specialist software before buying: UWE Bristol cautions that some applications are unavailable on macOS and that Windows cannot be installed on Apple-processor Macs.

Lenovo

A Windows-laptop range to investigate when your course requires Windows software.

  • Lenovo UK has an education purchase programme for verified students and teachers.
  • Confirm the exact model’s configuration and required-application support; the programme does not establish course suitability.

Dell

Another Windows-laptop route to assess against a department’s software requirements.

  • Dell UK describes a student programme with eligibility verification.
  • Check the chosen model and its support arrangements independently of programme eligibility.

Acer

Its Chromebook range is relevant only where the course confirms ChromeOS will support the work and assessments.

  • Acer UK identifies Chromebook Plus model lines running ChromeOS.
  • Acer’s range does not resolve course compatibility: UWE Bristol cautions against Chromebooks as primary devices where specialist applications are required.

Questions about university laptops

Should I choose Windows, Mac or ChromeOS before receiving my course requirements?

Check your department’s requirements first. UWE Bristol says required course software determines the device type: it describes Windows as the most compatible choice, cautions that some specialist applications are unavailable on macOS, and does not recommend Chromebooks as primary devices where specialist applications are needed.

When might an engineering course require Windows?

Windows is the route to check when the department names Windows-only applications. The University of Bath’s Mechanical Engineering department says several key programs are Windows-only and recommends a Windows laptop meeting Autodesk Inventor requirements; check the guidance for your own course rather than applying that requirement to every engineering programme.

Can I use a Chromebook for university coursework and exams?

Only choose one after confirming your own course’s software and assessment arrangements. University of Bristol Health Sciences guidance says its online-proctored exam browser is incompatible with Chromebooks, while the University of Oxford says it supplies Chromebooks for many in-person typed exams. Those different arrangements do not establish compatibility for a student’s own device.

What should I check on a refurbished laptop?

Check the exact configuration, stated condition, battery information, warranty terms and security-update support alongside course-software compatibility. Apple UK says its Certified Refurbished products undergo full functional testing and include a one-year warranty, but those terms apply to Apple’s programme; Cardiff University warns that devices without current security-update support may be incompatible with its systems.
