Who is this setup for?

Regular hybrid document workers

If you move between home and the workplace but spend long periods reading, writing or working with spreadsheets at home, focus on a desk arrangement you can use repeatedly. The Health and Safety Executive advises that home workers should be able to achieve a comfortable, sustainable posture.

Laptop users with a fixed home desk

A desk where a monitor and input devices can stay in place gives you the option to position the screen separately from the keyboard and mouse. Check your laptop’s display connection before choosing a monitor or a one-cable arrangement.

Employees with managed work laptops

If your employer controls software and peripherals, ask IT which docks, receivers, Bluetooth devices and drivers are permitted. The National Cyber Security Centre identifies device management and organisational policy as important to personal-device arrangements.

What should you choose first?

Decide how to position the screen and input devices, then check whether your connections call for a monitor alone, a hub or a dock.

Priority What to check Your needs
Screen position Check whether the laptop screen can be raised or a separate monitor positioned appropriately. If raising the laptop, allow room for a separate keyboard and mouse, as the Health and Safety Executive advises for laptop use. I work at the same desk for long stretches and want to position the screen without having to type on a raised laptop.
Display connection Match the laptop’s video output to the monitor input and cable. For more than one external display, check the exact laptop model and the intended resolution and refresh rate; Apple says Mac display limits depend on these details. A larger screen would help at my home desk, or I need a portable second screen when moving between locations.
Dock compatibility Check the laptop’s USB-C, USB4 or Thunderbolt functions against the dock, cable and charging requirements. Microsoft notes that USB-C hardware and software combinations can affect available functions. I would rather reconnect a desk’s equipment through fewer cables, but I need the display and charging functions to work with my actual laptop.
Ports and equipment Count the displays, USB devices and wired-network connections you will use. Compare those needs with a direct monitor connection, a compact hub and a dock; check the package contents as well as the ports. My desk has several devices to reconnect, or I only need one display and have little reason to add a dock.
Work-device policy Ask employer IT about permitted Bluetooth pairing, USB receivers, docks, network adapters and software installation before selecting accessories for a managed laptop. I use an employer-managed laptop and need equipment that fits its connection and security rules.

What should you avoid overlooking?

  • Assuming every USB-C port does the same job

A plug may fit while a required display, charging, USB4 or Thunderbolt function remains unavailable. Microsoft notes that USB-C functions depend on the hardware and software combination.

Check the exact laptop model’s port and charging specifications against the dock and cable requirements before buying.

  • Raising the laptop but using its built-in keyboard

Moving the screen also moves the attached keyboard and trackpad. For laptop use with an elevated screen, the Health and Safety Executive advises a separate keyboard and mouse.

Plan space for those input devices when choosing a riser or arranging the desk.

  • Assuming a dock comes with every connection part

A dock’s listed functions do not tell you what is in the box or whether its power arrangement meets your laptop’s requirements.

Read the exact package list and match the required power supply and cable to the dock and laptop.

Kensington says the SD4842P excludes its cable, power supply and power cords, so those parts need to be arranged separately.

  • Buying for a managed laptop without asking IT

Employer rules can affect whether a personal dock, receiver, Bluetooth peripheral or required driver can be used with a work device.

Ask which connection methods and personal accessories are permitted and supported before settling on a setup.

Brand ranges worth comparing

Dell

Dell’s UK monitor range includes USB-C models for a fixed desk.

  • Dell lists the S2725DC as a 27-inch QHD monitor with height, pivot, swivel and tilt adjustment.
  • Check the chosen monitor and laptop together; the S2725DC’s listed USB-C connection alone does not establish the charging or hub functions your laptop can use.

Kensington

Kensington offers docking options for connecting displays and desk peripherals.

  • Kensington specifies the SD4842P for compatible Windows laptops using Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, USB4 or USB-C Alt Mode.
  • Its stated display capability has compatibility conditions, and Kensington says the cable, power supply and power cords are not included.

Logitech

Logitech’s UK range includes wired, wireless and multi-device keyboard-and-mouse combinations.

  • Separate input devices let you position a keyboard and mouse independently of an elevated laptop screen.
  • Check the selected combination’s connection method and software needs against your work laptop and employer policy.

Ergotron

Ergotron’s WorkFit range addresses desk conversion and component positioning rather than laptop connectivity.

  • Ergotron describes the WorkFit-C as a height-adjustable platform that places a laptop beside a monitor.
  • Check desk space, installation and the chosen model’s requirements; a desk converter serves a different use than a small laptop riser.

Common questions

Do I need a monitor, dock, stand, keyboard and mouse together?

No. For sustained laptop work, start with screen and input positioning: the Health and Safety Executive advises using a separate keyboard and mouse when the laptop screen is elevated. Add a monitor if you want a separately positioned display, and consider a dock when your connections call for one.

Will any USB-C dock work with my work laptop?

No. Microsoft notes that USB-C hardware and software combinations can affect dock, display and charging functions. Match the exact laptop model’s port and charging specifications to the dock and cable, and check employer permission for a personal dock.

Can a Mac use more than one external display through a dock?

That depends on the Mac model and the displays. Apple says the number usable at once depends on the model and each display’s resolution and refresh rate; check those limits before choosing a multi-display dock.

Should I ask IT before connecting my own peripherals?

Yes, if you use an employer-managed laptop. Ask whether the intended Bluetooth devices, USB receivers, docks, network adapters or drivers are permitted and supported; organisational device policy can affect which setup you can use.
