Who needs which setup?

One-socket video-call users

If your main additions are a webcam and perhaps a mouse or keyboard, look for the required USB data connection and a way to use your existing laptop charger. Anker’s pass-through hub range illustrates why the charger and hub power ratings need checking separately.

Fixed-desk peripheral users

If the webcam and several accessories stay at one desk, a dock with enough accessible USB ports may reduce cable swapping. Kensington’s SD4842P is an example of a desktop dock that can charge connected accessories without a laptop attached.

Multi-display laptop users

If external screens are part of the same setup, check video support on the exact laptop as well as on the dock. Apple says the number and kind of displays a Mac can connect depend on its ports and model.

What matters when choosing a hub or dock?

Start with the webcam’s USB connection and the laptop’s charging requirement; assess extra desk ports and display support only if you need them.

Concern What to check Who this matters to
Webcam and charging from one connection Confirm a USB data port for the webcam and pass-through charging that meets the laptop’s needs after the hub’s own power use. If I have little socket space, I want to connect my webcam while continuing to use my laptop charger. Around 37% of consumers put this one-socket need first.
Permanent desk connections Count the USB-A and USB-C ports your devices require; check whether the dock needs its own power supply and what comes in the box. With a webcam and several desk accessories left in place, I would rather avoid unplugging devices each day. This is the main concern for around 27% of consumers.
Laptop and display compatibility Match the dock’s required USB-C, USB4, Thunderbolt or DisplayLink functions to the laptop; check its supported displays if screens are needed. If I also use external screens, I need the advertised connections to work with my particular laptop. Around 27% of consumers prioritise that compatibility.
Webcam detection Check the USB connection and, if the camera fails in Windows, its camera-access settings. For calls, I need the webcam to be recognised reliably, not simply another available port. Around 9% of consumers place that need first.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Reading charger input as laptop charging output

Anker says its 555 hub accepts up to 100W of pass-through input but uses 15W for its own operation; its wall charger is not included. The input rating therefore is not the power delivered to the laptop.

Compare the laptop’s charging requirement with the hub’s stated host output, and check whether you already have a suitable charger and cable.

  • Assuming every USB-C port supports every dock function

A matching connector does not establish video or charging compatibility. Lenovo specifies host-protocol requirements for its docks, while Apple says external-display support depends on the Mac model.

Check the exact laptop and dock specifications for the functions you intend to use; monitor-output support matters only if screens are part of your setup.

  • Equating similarly named hubs with the same model

Anker’s 555 A8383 and a Joybuy-listed Anker PowerExpand 8-in-1 have different published charging descriptions; a shared brand and port count do not establish that they are identical.

Match the full model or part number, port layout, charging specification and package contents before applying advice about one listing to another.

  • Blaming every camera fault on the dock

Microsoft identifies USB connections, camera controls, permissions and drivers among the things to check when an external camera fails in Windows.

Test the webcam directly or with another compatible device, then check its physical controls and Windows camera permissions before replacing the dock.

Relevant brands to consider

Anker

Anker offers portable USB-C hubs and docks for combining laptop charging with peripherals and, on some models, displays.

  • Anker specifies up to 100W pass-through input for the 555 hub, with 15W reserved for hub operation.
  • The 555 wall charger is not included. Anker also says its Nano 8-in-1 requires a suitable full-function host connection and mirrors, rather than extends, two displays on macOS.

Kensington

Kensington’s SD4842P is a desktop-dock option for a fixed workspace with multiple USB accessories.

  • Kensington specifies five USB ports, up to 100W Power Delivery and accessory charging without a connected laptop for the SD4842P.
  • Its stated display functions depend on a compatible laptop; Kensington says the cable, power supply and power cords are not included with this model.

Lenovo

Lenovo’s ThinkPad Universal USB-C Dock is aimed at desks needing USB peripherals alongside Ethernet and display connections.

  • Lenovo lists USB-A, USB-C, Ethernet and display connections, plus a 90W power adapter, for part number 40AY0090UK.
  • Check the laptop’s required host protocol and confirm the dock’s laptop-charging output in the current product documentation before purchase.

Frequently asked questions

Will any USB-C dock work with my laptop and webcam?

No: check that it has a USB data port suitable for the webcam, then confirm any additional functions you need against the laptop’s specifications. Charging and external displays may require particular host capabilities; Lenovo specifies supported protocols for its docks, and Anker says its Nano 8-in-1 requires a full-function USB-C, USB4 or Thunderbolt connection.

Can a USB-C hub help if I have only one wall socket available?

Yes, a suitable pass-through hub can connect the webcam while using your existing laptop charger through the hub. Check the power delivered to the laptop rather than relying on charger-input wattage: Anker says its 555 hub reserves 15W of its up-to-100W pass-through input for operation and does not include a wall charger.

Why is my webcam not detected through the dock?

Start by checking the USB connection and testing the webcam directly or with another compatible device. For Windows, Microsoft also advises checking camera controls, access permissions and drivers before assuming the dock needs replacing.

What should I check when buying a mains-powered dock for Great Britain?

Check the exact dock’s supplied power equipment and seller documentation, rather than assuming a particular listing meets electrical requirements. The Office for Product Safety and Standards states that applicable safety requirements must be met before electrical equipment is placed on the Great Britain market; that general rule does not establish whether an individual dock complies.
