Who might add a monitor?

Laptop users working at one desk most days

A separate display can provide more room for documents and meetings while the laptop remains your computer. For prolonged laptop work, the HSE advises a separate keyboard and mouse so you can raise the laptop screen.

Home workers planning a one-cable desk setup

A USB-C monitor or dock may bring display and other connections together. Check the exact laptop port’s video and charging capabilities, along with the monitor’s functions, before relying on one cable.

People working or studying at a small desk

Screen size is only part of the fit. Allow room for the stand, laptop and input devices, and check whether you can position the display at a workable viewing distance.

What should you check before buying?

Decide where the screen and input devices will sit, then confirm the computer connection before choosing a monitor size or docking arrangement.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Screen position Check the stand’s adjustment range and whether the desk has room for separate input devices. The HSE advises a separate keyboard and mouse for prolonged laptop use so the laptop screen can be raised. I work at one desk for long stretches and want to position the screen without having to type on a raised laptop.
Connection Match the computer’s video output to the monitor input and cable or adapter. For USB-C, check video support, charging requirements and any dock or external-display limits for the exact computer. I want to connect the screen in the way my computer supports, rather than assume every USB-C port handles video and charging.
Working area Compare screen size, resolution and the number of displays your computer supports at the intended resolution and refresh rate. Apple Support notes that a Mac’s display limit depends on its model and the connected displays’ settings. Documents, spreadsheets or meetings take up more room than my current screen comfortably gives them.
Desk fit Measure usable width and depth, including space for the stand and laptop. Check screen adjustment and whether windows or lights will reflect in the display. My desk has to accommodate both the new screen and the way I actually work.

Common setup mistakes

  • Assuming USB-C means display and charging through one cable

USB-C functions vary by device. BenQ, for example, specifies USB-C video input on the GW2490C but says that connection does not provide Power Delivery.

Check the laptop’s video-output specification, its charging needs and the monitor’s stated Power Delivery before choosing a cable or dock.

A separate charger or a different connection arrangement may still be needed.

  • Choosing screen size before checking the workstation

A screen that fits across the desk may still leave too little room for its stand, the laptop or separate input devices. The HSE also advises placing the screen directly ahead at a suitable height and distance.

Measure the desk and plan the laptop’s position. If the supplied stand cannot place the screen where you need it, check for a compatible mounting option.

A monitor arm, laptop riser or separate keyboard and mouse may be needed for the intended layout.

  • Expecting a second screen to fix the whole workstation

The HSE’s workstation guidance considers equipment, furniture and working conditions together; a monitor changes only part of that arrangement.

Review the chair, screen position, lighting and work routine as well as the display. If you are a worker covered by the UK display screen equipment rules, use your employer’s workstation assessment process.

Brand and model references

These manufacturer specifications illustrate different monitor connections and stand arrangements; they do not establish availability in the Joybuy selection below.

Dell’s P2425HE is a 23.8-inch Full HD USB-C hub monitor for a desk where stand adjustment and peripheral connections matter.

  • Dell lists height and pivot adjustment, HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet and up to 90W USB-C Power Delivery for the P2425HE.
  • Check that your laptop supports video over its USB-C port and that the monitor’s power output suits its charging requirements.

Lenovo ThinkVision

Lenovo’s P24h-30 pairs a 23.8-inch QHD display with USB-C docking-style connections for a fixed desk setup.

  • Lenovo lists USB-C, HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet and USB hub connections, along with an adjustable stand.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to replace my laptop to get more screen space?

No, not if the laptop still meets your computing needs. A separate monitor can add viewing area while the laptop remains the computer. For prolonged laptop work, the HSE advises separate input devices so the laptop screen can be raised.

Will any USB-C laptop port work with a USB-C monitor?

No. Check the exact laptop model and port for video output, then check the monitor’s connection and any charging requirements. A USB-C connector alone does not establish those functions or how many external displays the computer supports.

Can I use an adapter if the laptop and monitor have different ports?

An adapter may be an option once you know both connection types and the display mode you want. Apple Support describes using an adapter to connect certain Macs to HDMI; confirm that the adapter, computer and monitor support your intended resolution and refresh rate.

What UK workstation guidance matters when I work on a screen every day?

The HSE says UK display screen equipment rules apply to workers who use such equipment daily for continuous periods of an hour or more. Its workstation guidance covers equipment, furniture and work conditions, so an applicable employer assessment concerns the whole setup—not an automatic requirement to buy a personal monitor.
