Who needs a second monitor?

Laptop users working with documents and meetings

An external screen may give you room to keep documents and calls visible together. Before choosing one, check your laptop’s video-output port, supported display count and any cable or adapter you intend to use. Apple and Microsoft both advise checking support for the exact computer model.

People working long hours at a fixed desk

Screen position matters as much as panel size. The Health and Safety Executive advises placing the screen directly in front of you, with its top around eye level and the display about an arm’s length away; an adjustable stand can help you achieve that position.

Home workers with limited desk space

A compact or portable display is worth considering when a larger monitor and its stand would crowd the desk. Compare the complete dimensions and stand footprint with the space you can actually use.

What should you check before buying?

Start with your computer’s display support and the room on your desk, then choose the screen and stand that suit your work.

Priority What to check Your needs
Connection Check the exact computer model’s video outputs and supported external displays. Match a monitor input to the full cable, adapter or dock connection; Microsoft notes that the connection path and display count can affect available resolution and refresh rate on Surface devices. I want a second screen that works with my laptop and any dock I already use, without assuming that matching connector shapes guarantee the intended display settings.
Screen and desk fit Measure clear desk width and depth, including the stand footprint. Compare screen size and resolution with the space needed for your documents, meetings or detailed work. For a narrow desk, I would favour a display I can position comfortably over a larger diagonal that leaves too little room for my keyboard and other equipment.
Screen position Check stand height and tilt, or compatibility with a suitable mount. The Health and Safety Executive advises a screen directly in front of you, with its top around eye level and the display about an arm’s length away. During long sessions at a fixed desk, I need to place the screen where I can see it without twisting towards it or working around the stand.
USB-C charging Confirm that the computer port supports video and compare the monitor’s stated power delivery with the laptop’s charging requirements. Dell UK specifies up to 100W for the P2726HE, BenQ UK specifies 65W for the GW2786TC, and LG UK specifies up to 15W for the 27U631A-B. A single cable would make my desk simpler, but I still need to know whether that connection can carry video and supply enough power for my laptop.

Which assumptions can cause problems?

  • Assuming every USB-C connection handles video and charging

USB-C monitor charging levels differ by model, and the computer’s port must support the intended video connection. A monitor with a USB-C socket is not, by itself, a complete one-cable solution.

Check the laptop’s video-output and charging specifications against the monitor’s USB-C functions and power-delivery rating. Confirm which cable is included.

You may still need a suitable cable, dock or separate laptop charger.

  • Choosing by screen diagonal without checking the desk

A monitor can fit across a desk yet leave too little depth to position the screen comfortably. The Health and Safety Executive advises keeping the display directly in front of you and about an arm’s length away.

Measure the usable desk area and stand footprint, then check whether the stand or a compatible mount allows the screen position you need.

  • Assuming a dock delivers every monitor setting

Microsoft says the resolution and refresh rate available to a Surface external display can depend on the connection method and number of displays; adapters, docks and hubs may impose limits.

Check your exact computer, dock and cable against the resolution, refresh rate and display count you intend to use.

  • Assuming daisy-chaining works the same on every computer

For the GW2786TC, BenQ describes DisplayPort/USB-C Multi-Stream Transport daisy-chaining but says Mac devices use Thunderbolt for daisy-chaining and may need a Thunderbolt dock or another device.

If you plan to connect two monitors in a chain, check both the computer’s multi-display support and the monitor’s specified method before buying.

Which monitor lines are worth comparing?

These model examples show why it is useful to compare connection, resolution and stand specifications rather than relying on a brand name alone.

Dell

Dell UK’s Pro P2726HE is a 27-inch Full HD USB-C hub monitor for a fixed desk setup.

  • Dell UK specifies up to 100W USB-C power delivery and height, pivot, tilt and swivel adjustment for this model.
  • Its stated resolution is 1920 × 1080; compare that with the resolution you want for detailed work.

BenQ

BenQ UK’s GW2786TC is a 27-inch USB-C home-office monitor with stated 65W power delivery and stand adjustment.

  • The model offers a USB-C connection and adjustable screen positioning.
  • For this model’s daisy-chaining feature, BenQ distinguishes DisplayPort/USB-C Multi-Stream Transport from the Thunderbolt method used by Mac devices. Check your computer and any required dock.

LG

LG UK specifies the 27U631A-B as a 27-inch QHD (2560 × 1440) IPS monitor with 99% typical sRGB coverage and USB-C display connectivity.

  • Its stated QHD resolution and colour-coverage specification give document and creative-work buyers concrete details to compare.
  • LG UK specifies USB-C power delivery of up to 15W and says the USB-C cable is not included. Check laptop charging requirements and the cable you will use.

Common questions

Where should I put an external monitor for a long workday?

Place it directly in front of you, with the top around eye level and the screen about an arm’s length away, as the Health and Safety Executive advises. Check whether the stand or a compatible mount lets you reach that position on your desk.

Will any USB-C laptop port connect to a USB-C monitor?

Do not assume it will carry video. Apple advises checking a Mac’s ports and Display Support or Video Support specifications; Microsoft says Surface display capability depends on the device model and the cable or adapter used. Check the specifications for your exact laptop before choosing the monitor connection.

When might I need an adapter or dock?

Check for an adapter when your computer’s usable video output does not match the monitor input, or for a supported dock when your intended multi-display arrangement needs one. Apple notes that an adapter may bridge mismatched connectors; Microsoft cautions that adapters and docks can limit available resolution or refresh rate on Surface devices.
