Who this setup suits

Fixed-set photography tutors

If you record recurring lessons in one room, you can keep a soft key light and the white backdrop in repeatable positions. A daylight COB light with a compatible softbox is worth considering when the room and camera stay at a consistent daylight balance.

Tutors working around mixed room light

When window light, household lighting or teaching locations change, a bi-colour light gives you colour-temperature adjustment. Godox specifies a 2800K–6500K range for the SL60IIBi; Zhiyun specifies 2700K–6500K for the MOLUS G60.

Mobile one-person lesson creators

If you move the set between rooms, consider the lamp head's weight, power arrangement and the equipment you must carry with it. Zhiyun specifies a 300g weight and adapter-based power options for the MOLUS G60; its suitability still depends on the modifier and support your lesson needs.

What to check before buying

Plan separate control of the presenter and backdrop before deciding between a fixed daylight balance and bi-colour adjustment. If the set moves, check how the light, modifier, stand and power equipment will work together.

ConcernBuying checksWho this matters to
Soft, controllable key light Check dimming and whether the intended softbox fits the exact light. Confirm which modifiers and supports are included. If I need my face and camera demonstration to remain readable, I want a softened key light I can adjust without moving it; around 31% of consumers put soft key-light control first.
Independent backdrop control Plan a separately adjustable lighting position for the backdrop, allowing for stand space, outlets and cable routes. When I change how bright the white backdrop appears, I do not want to change the presenter's exposure too. Around 31% of consumers make independent backdrop control their main priority.
Colour matching Check the exact model's colour-temperature range and stated CRI and TLCI ratings; set the camera white balance with the visible room lights in mind. If the room light changes while I demonstrate colour decisions, I need a lighting balance I can manage; roughly 23% of consumers prioritise colour matching.
Portability and power Check lamp-head weight, required power adapters and cooling method, then test for audible fan noise at the intended microphone position. When I film in different rooms on my own, carrying and powering the setup matters most; about 15% of consumers put portability and power flexibility first.

Buying pitfalls

  • Comparing brightness figures from different test setups

Amaran quotes the 100d S with a Hyper-Reflector, Godox quotes SL60II output with standard reflectors, and Zhiyun gives a bare-light figure for the MOLUS G60. Those figures do not tell you what each light will deliver through your chosen softbox.

Compare illuminance only where the distance, colour temperature and modifier match. Test the intended softened setup before relying on a quoted figure.

  • Planning for the lamp head alone

A soft key light and independently lit backdrop need suitable positioning as well as light output. The equipment supplied with a lamp head may not cover the whole setup.

Map out the key-light and backdrop positions, then confirm the contents of the exact bundle.

Depending on the fixture and room layout, you may also need a softbox, compatible adapter, stands, a grid or cable-routing equipment.

  • Assuming a compact light will be silent

Zhiyun specifies active cooling for the MOLUS G60. A light's size alone cannot tell you whether its operating sound will be noticeable in a spoken lesson.

Put the microphone in its filming position and record a short test with the light running at the planned output.

  • Overlooking stands and cables on the lesson set

Adding a backdrop light creates another equipment position and cable route. The Health and Safety Executive identifies risk assessment as fundamental to controlling hazards in film and broadcast work.

Use stable supports, route cables away from walkways, keep fixtures ventilated and reassess the layout when equipment moves.

Relevant brands to consider

amaran

The 100d S is a daylight-only COB example for a fixed set using Bowens-mount modifiers.

  • Amaran specifies 100W, 5600K, 0–100% dimming, a Bowens mount, CRI 96+ and TLCI 99+ for the 100d S.
  • Its fixed 5600K colour temperature cannot be adjusted to match warmer room lighting. Amaran's quoted output uses a Hyper-Reflector at 1 metre, not a softbox.

Godox

The SL60IIBi is a bi-colour COB example for lessons where the lighting balance changes and Bowens-mount modifiers are useful.

  • Godox specifies 2800K–6500K adjustment, 0–100% dimming, CRI of at least 96 and TLCI of at least 97 for the SL60IIBi.
  • Its quoted 25,100 lux is measured at 1 metre with the standard reflector; it does not describe output through a softbox.

Zhiyun

The MOLUS G60 is a compact bi-colour COB example for tutors who move their lesson setup.

  • Zhiyun specifies 60W, 300g, 2700K–6500K and power-adapter or PD-adapter options for the MOLUS G60.
  • It uses active cooling. Zhiyun's 2,376-lux figure is for the bare light at 1 metre, 6500K and full output, so it is not directly comparable with reflector-based figures.

Frequently asked questions

Is one video light enough for a lesson against a white backdrop?

One softened light can serve as the presenter's key light, but a separately adjustable lighting path gives you more control over the white backdrop. Test the result with your backdrop, room depth and camera exposure; a particular number of lights does not guarantee a uniformly white background.

Should I buy a daylight-only or bi-colour light?

Choose daylight-only if you can keep the room lighting and camera at a consistent daylight balance; amaran specifies the 100d S at 5600K. Choose bi-colour when you need to match changing ambient light: Godox specifies 2800K–6500K for the SL60IIBi, while Zhiyun specifies 2700K–6500K for the MOLUS G60.

Can I compare lux figures from different video lights?

Only when the measurement conditions are comparable. The cited amaran and Godox figures use reflectors, while Zhiyun's MOLUS G60 figure is for a bare light at 1 metre, 6500K and full output. Check the distance, colour temperature and modifier before using any quoted figure to choose a softened key light.

What safety checks matter for a mains-powered filming setup in Great Britain?

Check the exact light's marking, instructions and power arrangement, then plan stable supports and cable routes for the set. GOV.UK says CE marking continues to be recognised alongside UKCA for applicable products placed on the Great Britain market; marking does not replace checks for your particular setup. For professional filming, the Health and Safety Executive identifies risk assessment as fundamental to managing production hazards.
