Who is this setup for?

Top-down calligraphy instructors

If you film the page and your writing hand from above, the pen tip needs to remain visible as your hand moves. Ulanzi suggests starting with diffused lights on opposite sides at roughly 45 degrees; adjust their positions while making your usual strokes.

Portfolio-focused craft makers

If the recording will sit alongside your finished work, compare adjustable white balance and the stated colour-rendering specifications for the exact light. Test your own ink and paper on camera rather than relying on a specification to predict the final colour.

Small-space home creators

If the desk must return to other craft work after filming, consider the space taken by the stand, diffuser and cables as well as the lamp. Compact COB lights and slim panels offer different ways to arrange a temporary setup.

What matters when choosing a light?

Choose the arrangement that keeps your hand shadow off the active stroke area, then test colour and reflections with the paper and inks you will actually film. A portable fixture still needs a workable position beside the page.

Bi-colour COB with diffusion

Choose when: You have space for a stand and want to change how the light falls using a compatible modifier.

Allow for: A bare point source can leave defined hand shadows, so the diffuser and its space beside the desk are part of the setup.

Bi-colour LED panel

Choose when: A slim, diffused light is easier to place beside a small tabletop used regularly for lessons.

Allow for: The panel's light spread is tied more closely to its fixture design than that of a COB light using interchangeable modifiers.

ConcernBuying checksWho this matters to
Hand shadows Check diffusion and whether the mount and stand allow side placement clear of the camera. If my hand crosses the pen tip while I write, I need a setup I can move until the active stroke stays visible. Around 33% of consumers put hand-shadow control first.
Ink and paper colour Compare the exact model's adjustable colour temperature and stated colour-rendering figures; test with manual camera white balance. When my portfolio shows particular inks and paper tones, I want the recording to look consistent with the work itself. For around 33% of consumers, credible colour is the primary concern.
Reflections and exposure Look for brightness control and a way to diffuse or reposition the light beside reflective surfaces. With glossy paper or wet ink, I need to move the light until reflections stop hiding the marks. Glare and exposure come first for around 20% of consumers.
Desk space and portability Check the complete setup's footprint, mounting and power options, including what the kit contains. If I pack away the filming equipment after each lesson, the stand and power arrangement matter as much as the lamp. Around 14% of consumers prioritise a setup that fits this routine.

Buying pitfalls to avoid

  • Expecting a bright bare COB light to remove hand shadows

Brightness does not determine where a moving hand casts its shadow. A small, undiffused source can leave a defined shadow across the writing area.

Check the modifier mount, compatible diffuser and stand footprint, then try the position with your normal writing movements. Ulanzi's top-down drawing guidance suggests starting with diffused lights on opposite sides.

A diffuser or softbox, reflector, stand or grip arm may need to be obtained separately.

  • Assuming colour-rendering figures settle the final image

Manufacturer-stated CRI, TLCI or SSI figures describe the light, not the combined result of camera settings, room lighting, ink and paper finish.

Compare figures for the exact model, set a repeatable white balance and record a short reference clip using your actual materials.

  • Assuming a portable light will suit every recording length

Battery duration depends on operating conditions, and a compact fixture's cooling may be audible near a lesson microphone.

Check the stated runtime conditions, power options and cooling design. Make a short recording with the microphone in its intended position.

Your arrangement may call for a suitable USB-C PD power source, mains adapter or a position farther from the microphone.

  • Overlooking the supplied power arrangement

The lamp, power supply and plug need to work together in the place where you intend to film.

Check the exact kit's power documentation and connection before purchase. When replacing an old light, use an appropriate electrical-waste route; GOV.UK explains the waste-electrical-equipment arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Should I put one light directly above the calligraphy page?

Start with light coming from the sides rather than aiming a bare source straight down at the writing area. Ulanzi suggests two diffused lights on opposite sides at roughly 45 degrees for top-down drawing; move them while making your normal strokes. If you use one light, try it to one side with diffusion or a reflector.

Will a high CRI or TLCI rating make my ink colours match on video?

No: a light's stated colour-rendering rating cannot settle the final camera image. White balance, other room light, exposure and the finish of your paper and inks also affect what you record. Set a manual white balance and make a short clip with the materials intended for the lesson.

Do I need a separate softbox or diffuser for a COB light?

Check the exact bundle before buying, because a compatible modifier may be separate. Diffusion softens a small point source, but the resulting hand shadows still depend on where you place the light, diffuser and writing hand.

Is a CE mark enough when buying a video light for use in Great Britain?

A CE mark alone does not settle whether a particular light and its supplied power arrangement suit your setup. GOV.UK's March 2025 Great Britain guidance says recognition of certain goods meeting EU requirements, including CE marking, was extended indefinitely; check which requirements apply to the exact product and its power supply. Do not assume the same arrangements apply in Northern Ireland.

What should I do with an old video light?

Use an appropriate electrical-waste collection or retailer take-back route rather than putting the light in general household rubbish. GOV.UK's waste-electrical-equipment guidance covers electrical and electronic equipment; check local instructions separately for any removable battery.
