From a cosy film night on the sofa to a sophisticated snack for guests, popcorn has a unique ability to suit almost any occasion. Yet, navigating the choices can be surprisingly complex. Should you opt for the convenience of microwave bags, the creative freedom of raw kernels, or the instant indulgence of a ready-to-eat gourmet bag?
This guide is designed to help you understand the different types of popcorn available and identify which one best fits your snacking needs. We will look at options for convenience, customisation and pure indulgence, helping you make a more informed choice.
Before diving into specific products, it helps to consider what you value most in a snack. Your preference for convenience, flavour and ingredients will point you toward the right type of popcorn.
For many, speed and simplicity are paramount. Microwave popcorn offers a warm, fresh snack in minutes with minimal effort. Simply place the bag in the microwave, and you are moments away from a classic cinema-style experience at home. Similarly, ready-to-eat popcorn removes all preparation, offering instant gratification straight from the packet. These are excellent choices for busy households, impromptu gatherings, or when you simply want a treat without the washing up.
If you prefer to have full control over your snack, starting with popcorn kernels is the way to go. Popping your own corn on the hob, in an air-popper, or even in the microwave (with a suitable container) allows you to manage the amount of oil, salt and sugar. This makes it the ideal route for anyone looking to create a healthy popcorn snack. You can add a simple sprinkle of salt or get creative with spices, nutritional yeast, or a drizzle of honey.
The world of popcorn flavour is vast. The timeless sweet and salted popcorn combination remains a firm favourite, balancing two distinct tastes in one satisfying crunch. For those with a more adventurous palate, gourmet popcorn brands offer complex and luxurious flavours. Options like salted caramel popcorn are often made with high-quality ingredients like real butter and sea salt, elevating the humble corn kernel into a truly decadent treat.
Based on these different needs, we have selected a few standout options that cater to a range of preferences and occasions.

On its own, air-popped popcorn is a surprisingly nutritious snack. It is a wholegrain, which means it is high in dietary fibre and contains some minerals. However, its healthiness largely depends on what is added to it. Popcorn can become less healthy when loaded with butter, sugar and salt. For a healthy popcorn snack, consider using popcorn kernels and controlling the toppings yourself.
The hob method is classic and reliable. Heat a couple of tablespoons of oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pan over medium heat. Add three or four kernels and wait for them to pop. Once they do, add the rest of your kernels (about 60g for a good serving) in an even layer, cover the pan and remove it from the heat for 30 seconds. Return it to the heat and shake gently until the popping slows to one or two pops every few seconds.
The key to preventing burnt popcorn is constant movement and careful heat management. Shaking the pan regularly ensures the kernels are heated evenly. As soon as the popping slows down significantly, remove the pan from the heat immediately. Any remaining pops will happen due to the residual heat in the pan, and leaving it on the burner any longer risks burning the popcorn at the bottom.
